No you're right. I just felt like we let him go in the sense that he should've been offered a promotion to stay (like, assistant defensive coordinator - lb coach). The LBs loved him and he was the only creative mind on the staff after serving time under LeBoux.

EDIT: And for all I know, we did that and he felt like he was ready to lead his own show. So far, he's right. UCLA has been a whipping boy for the last several years and at least now he is helping keeping them respectful.

You're right, he chose to leave for UCLA's open DC position. I just wonder if he'd be open to returning to the NFL(Skins) as a DC. It's a win win for both sides IMO

I love the idea of bringing him back, he knows th system, knows the players, andhas the players respect. Everytime we start over it's exactly that...starting over and another few years of learning a new system. Atleast if Spanos comes back he may putwrinkles and twists in but the base is already there and the personnel too.

Also he is the only major peice thats differnt from last year that I can think of and we see such a dramatic drop off.....I mean RAK and Carriker are out but the D stunk this year with them. OJ and Landry are gone but they didnt play anyhow.

There have been many great candidates discussed discussed so far but which ever one ends up coming needs to be able to pick his staff. I assume the guys that have been listed would get that opportunity but you never know with Shanny and his love-affair with Slowik, Burney etc.... Shanny may force Slowik on the staff meaning none of these big names would come. If Shanny wants control over the staff he has to get a young up and comer or a big time re-tread dying for a job (Haslett).

If that is the case, then Shanny is dumb. After his Super Bowls, his teams have always been good offensively, but sucked defensively. I wish he would realize that he needs to bring in somebody that will run the defense their own way and he just helps that person whenever they ask him for help.

Gone, but not forgotten... RIP RP

Agreed I just hope Shanny has learned that complete control over the defensive staff is no way to go. Sure as a head coach you can have input but I think the majority of the final say should go to the new d coordinator.

    Um, I think I can.
Beginning of the season, Carolina was ranked 19th as of week 1.
    This week they're ranked 29th.
    Sound familiar?

What SHOULD happen is, Mike realize his personal choice of the 3-4 isn't cutting it. A 4-3 would get a little more pressure, being the most action on the defense is either at the LOS or the secondary, in which the LBs would be -1.

Mike's a good offensive mind, and needs to leave the defense alone to someone else, because at the current evaluation of the players, switching back to the 4-3 will take as much time as finding a good enough DC and players to fit the 3-4.

Rex, bringing back Spanos, or the Steeler's LB coach are all worth while options in my mind.]

I just want someone whose familiar and competent running a 3-4 defense.

.... I heard somebody say that they hope the jets fire Rex Ryan and he can come here, I wouldn't be mad at that. If that doesn't happen, we should look at Keith Butler LB Coach from the Steelers. He aint going to wait for Dick to retire too much longer.

If that didn't work, I would risk hiring that defensive coordinator from Norte Dame, Bob Diaco. I think a college defense is easier to transfer than a college offense.
Butler is the heir apparent and loves working for the steelers. I think he would another five years if he had to.

I would like it if we could bring in either Joe Whitt or Kevin Greene from the Green Bay packers to bring that very effective Dom Capers system.

Darren Perry should also be among the top of the list for someone that know the Lebeau/Capers system.

Wow! This is all it takes for an opening post? A title, and then ...."discuss"?

I don't usually disrespect opening threads -- but this one might change my mind.
