Thread: Some fairly amazing things happened in the Senate and House races last night

Default Some fairly amazing things happened in the Senate and House races last night

If this does not justify a new thread, I apologize in advance and accept the slap on the wrist. But the election threads are all heavily focussed on the presidential race and there were some really interesting Senate races last night.

    1. Linda McMahon goes down in CT. This was no shocker, but I had not paid that much attention to Chris Murphy. Should I be this happy that a Democrat talked about health care as a right and ending foreign wars in a victory speech? I mean, he sounded like a Democrat. That made me happy.

    2. Two Independents in the Senate now. Sanders and King. This is a positive trend, I think.

    3. Being pro-rape is a bad political position. Akin and Mourdock just flat out gave the Dems two seats that they should have lost. Claire McCaskill is the luckiest politician in American history.

    4. First Lesbian in the Senate. Hooray for Tammy Baldwin.

    5. Are any of you paying attention to North Dakota? The Dems are probably going to win there. I don't know who Heidi Hetikamp is, but she is winning. This was not predicted.

    6. Can George Allen just stop now? Virginia does not like you. Go away.

    7. Scott Brown can go back to be a Wrangler Jeans model now. It's nice when really smart people beat really dumb people in elections. So, thanks, Massachusetts.

All in all, the Senate races went about as well as could ever be hoped for by the Dems. Not only are they going to increase the size of their delegation, but they elected actual liberals, not liberals pretending to be something else. The only race that disappointed me was Nebraska, but Bob Kerrey's ship sailed a long time ago.

I will also add that with the Dem gains, part of me kind of wishes that Joe Manchin had lost in WV. I despise Joe Manchin, who has the political courage of a slug.

    In the House:

    1. New Hampshire likes the ladies. New Hampshire made history by sending the first all-women delegation to Washington. Their governor is a women too. Hack comedian joke: Their motto should now be Live Free or Diet. I kid, I kid.

    2. Allen West is hopefully just a crazy guy now instead of a crazy guy with a vote.

    3. Bachmann just holds on. I have a feeling that she will soon just be a crazy lady, but not this year.

    4. Not amazing, but we have a Kennedy back in the House. So....our brief national nightmare is over, I guess.

Throw in (D) Heidi Heitkamp winning the Senate seat in North Dakota. Just finalized.

Missed it in your list actually... yea, they have called the race now. She was a former attorney general in ND, and has been out of politics for a while. I met her. She's a bad mama jama.

I don't know that much about her? How would you characterize her politics? Liberal? Moderate?

I'm giddy about Warren going after Wall Street. Is she the type to join her?

    Ah, that's a shame.
I hope he was replaced by a moderate.

I think I'll spend the next 6 years telling everyone what a fraud and liar Elizabeth Warren is.

I actually despise that woman. I am hoping she is exposed very quickly

Rep. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) defeated former Gov. Linda Lingle In Hawaii's race for U.S. Senate, projects the Associated Press.

The seat opened after the retirement of Sen. Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii), and Hirono enjoyed a large lead throughout the race.

    I'm curious.

    I kind of adore her.

We are usually not this far apart on things.

    A few victories for redistricting:

In Maryland's redrawn 6th district, John Delany (D) defeated 10-term Congressman Roscoe Bartlett (R).

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/...53f_story.html

In New York's redrawn 6th district, Grace Meng (D) became the first Asian-American Congresswoman from New York, and in Illinois's redraw 8th district, Tammy Duckworth (D) became the first Asian-American Congresswoman from Illinois. They are the first two Asian-American Congresswomen east of the Mississippi.

I'd characterize her as moderate on some issues and liberal on others. I think she is the type to crack down on Wall Street because she is very anti-fraud. And I think she will view some of this crap they pull as loophole stuff that is "legal fraud."

She's not Elizabeth Warren though. Few are. She didn't get elected in Massachusetts, remember.

Small note - Pete Stark of California, a Democrat who happens to be one of worst Representatives in Congress, finally got ousted. He was kind of like our Michele Bachman. Getting rid of him is a good thing.

Well worth it's own thread. And yes, it was a big night. I have a different take about last night then some of the rightside-spinning I hear (about how much closer it was this year than in '08 and how they gained governorship and how that's such a big endorsement for the R's platform). More later lol

Ive loved Warren for a long time, curious why you dont like her, shf.

I was very happy to see her win that seat. Matt Lauer asked her this morning if she was ready to reach across the aisle and work nicely with the republicans. She dodged nicely

Would really like to have a dem majority in house of reps, but ill take the senate majority thankyouverymuch.

If all the tea party is going to do is block policies and try to play stalemate, then the party is not going to gain any new energy, or new voters, and it may be awhile before we see a conservative in the white house. Its time for the tea party to step up and work with the president, not the other way around.

Happy for Warren, and happy for Massachusetts. Im still scratching my head as to how Romney made governor of that state?!

Mass voters have often done this thing where they vote for Republican governors, almost as if to say, "Look...someone needs to control us a little bit."
