I'm surprised no one has said Hot Water Heater. If the heater is old or the safety valve is bad, those things can go off like a bomb. It may have been a gas water heater. I had to replace mine in my current house this year because the water heater was leaking. I'm thinking hot water heater explosion.

Water heater explosions can do a lot of damage, but not so much as to completely obliterate 2 houses and render 31 others unlivable.

probably a pipe cracked or rusted.....it don't take long to get enough leakage for that kind of damage

Wouldn't a natural gas leak have caused a big continuous fire until the pipe was closed further down the line? I remember the San Bruno fire burned for 90 minutes because the gas kept feeding the flame.

Only guessing, but i would imagine there are some trip shut offs along the line for something like this. The charring of the two house remains indicate to me there was some fire.

there are restriction points,but they generally have to shut down a whole line/area
it could easily just flare off harmlessly after the explosion until shut off since there is no longer a buildup
if it was a windy day there would not be as much accumulation....who knows

Official says investigators in deadly Indianapolis blast looking at appliances from homes

INDIANAPOLIS — Investigators in the Indianapolis explosion that killed two people and decimated a neighborhood believe natural gas was involved and are focusing on appliances as they search for a cause, a city official said Tuesday.

Indianapolis Homeland Security Director Gary Coons made the announcement after the National Transportation Safety Board said investigators had found no leaks in the gas main or pipes leading into the house that exploded. The explosion Saturday leveled two homes and left dozens more uninhabitable.
