When I was working at Giant, my co-worker was telling me about that. I can't imagine people closing on Sundays now.

Zoony - Just curious - Are you also pissed at all the people watching football and going to the games? I mean -that demand has caused the NFL to now schedule 3 games on thanksgiving!!! TV crews, concession stands, Players, refs, coaches, ticket agents, ushers...all those people are gonna miss thanksgiving dinner for YOU!!

Remember when a convenience store had such amazing opening hours that they even named the company after it. A store which is only open from 7 to 11 now would be accused of being difficult.

Agree with everyone. Greed. Plain and simple. Retailers are Greedy. Consumers are Greedy.

You know, I do feel bad about the people who have to work concessions, parking, etc at the games on Thanksgiving. It's different to me than retail though. I'll get to that in a second. The players, coaches and support staff of the teams playing should feel good about playing on Thanksgiving. These people are a part of something that has become a staple of Thanksgiving. Millions and millions of people tune in each Thanksgiving to watch these people perform. If they love the sport, then they will realize what good they are doing for it. Same goes for college kids playing football on New Year's Day. The players and their families get to take part in huge team functions on Thanksgiving. The team uses the holiday to make them stronger.

As for the ancillary workers, they have it worse. I'm sure that the fans at the stadium are much more understanding of their plight than retail customers at Wal Mart. The fans are there to enjoy a game of football, they should be in a generally good mood. People who go shopping on Thanksgiving are cheap people looking for a good deal so you could rightly assume that they are rude, snooty and downright mean to the people that are serving them.

Different constituents of football games then Thanksgiving Christmas shoppers.

I think its ridiculous that Wal-Mart and Target are opening at 8pm for their "Black Friday" sales. I think they mean the "We're Greedy Bastards, so come on Thursday" sale.

Wasn't it 10 pm last year and midnight the year before?

Couldn't one reasonably project that it will be 6 pm and then 4 pm in the next two following years? If I'm not mistaken, Wal Mart was the first to make the hours change and then Target followed suit. I'm sure that in the grand scheme of things, Wal Mart has it in its plans to be open regular hours on Thanksgiving.

I hate Wal Mart but I do really agree with zoony on this one. The consumers are the problem.

Agreed. It would stop if people didn't show up Thursday night, but that just won't happen.

We are a consumer driven society.

The sentiment that zoony has really just presents one aspect in a large problem with our country. It just so happens that many of these problems converge on one given day (well really two now).

First is the fact that we are a "want it now" society. We lack any sort of patience when it comes to getting the things that WE want. We post about how badly we want these things on Facebook, we tell our friends, our family, our coworkers, anyone that will listen. We get so worked up over the things that we want that we put ourselves through extreme anxiety if we don't get them. Case in point: extended business hours, expedited shipping.

Second is we have little buying discipline. If we did, we wouldn't have the massive credit card debt that we do and we wouldn't have had a housing market crash. We will spend to the limit (credit limit) to get the things that WE want. If we want something REALLY bad then we will do anything in our power to get the credit or money so that we can buy that thing we really want.

Third is that businesses and creditors are more than happy to accommodate this. It makes them money, why wouldn't they? Businesses would be open 24 hours if it would make them money. Online retailers are shipping goods faster and faster, amazon.com has same day shipping. Retailers, both online and off, are dying for your business and they will stop at nothing to make sure they get it. If only you had the money, right? Well that's where creditors come in. Granted, they aren't as aggressive as they once were but they're still there to let you use money that you simply don't have RIGHT NOW.

But who can blame us as consumers? We are raised that way. Being a strong consumer is like having a drug habit. Crackhead consumerism.

ehh -I dont know if thats true.

I am Jewish and dont celebrate Christmas. So every year my family and I would work a charity Christmas wrap on Xmas eve...I would also voluter to work on Xmas and Xmas eve- From pizza delivery (Where tips were HUGE on Xmas eve) to movie theaters, and LOTS of restaurants work.
the Bethesda draft house, one of our busiest times of the year was xmas day. I loved it. It was a fun day to work. Same people would work every year (Those that didnt have families to spend the day with) and we would hang out after.

Now - its very possible its different on thanksgiving -But its also very possible its a bonding thing for employees as well. Much like football.

You could be right and your religion does weigh into you opinion as well. We run a very minimal staff at my auto shop on the major holidays (New Years, Easter,Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas). I had a Muslim guy that worked for me that would always ask to work Christmas (time + 1/2 pay) because he didn't celebrate. He liked the extra money and the fact that very little really needed to be done.

There are people who may want to work these holidays for one reason or another. What I know is that I would never work Thanksgiving or Christmas. I enjoy spending time with my family on these holidays. I've never had a job that caused me to miss these holidays and I would be upset if I did. I would never make any of my employees work a holiday that could otherwise be spent with family unless they really wanted to.

The last 2 years at my last job, we had to rotate holidays. So, I've had to work one of the major holidays the last 2 years. I work for the county now and we get the day after thanksgiving and the day before christmas this year in addition to both days. I worked at a hospital (non-essential job) where I wasn't involved in patient care, but I was a "financial counselor." They wanted a half crew (2 people) to work every holiday to go and collect money for insurance co-pays, co-insurances and self pays. Can you imagine someone coming to your bedside on X-mas day and asking you to pay? I mean, you'd feel bad enough just having to BE in the hospital on a holiday. The main reason I found another job. Greed. That's all the hospital cared about was the bottom line. BTW, I never went to any patient room to collect on the holiday. I refused to. I would get other work done.

Here's the dirty little secret: Thanksgiving sucks. It's the most godawful boring day of the year. It's 18 hours of nothing with one hour of overeating. I dread the idea of entertaining my kids all day. I may just send them to the park and hope for the best.

    Thank God for movie theaters.

(I also used to go the movies during the evening of Christmas Day. Christmas Eve is awesome. Christmas morning is great. Christmas Day afternoon is blah. Christmas Day night is death).
