I don't really agree. At some point within the last decade, probably with Friendster or MySpace, the anonymity of the Internet was sacrificed and it became a real place with real people. Most people's vital information is out there (shared or unshared) on the Internet. People use the Internet to communicate with people more than they do their phones or face to face. To expect people to act civil is paramount.

Most of those people were kids though. I'm not sure that we should out juveniles but something should be done about it. These are people (even if they are under 18) interacting with society and causing harm (not to me, but to some I'm sure). There should be some sort of justice for what is most certainly a hate crime.

Solving such a problem gets a bit more difficult for me though. I'm all for freedom on the Internet so coming up with some sort of rules and regulations about Internet social behavior is difficult.

You know what, you're right. It wasn't that I was racist (and I'm sure you weren't either) but I said hateful things and held positions that were harsh and left very little room for compromise. Hell, I used to be a republican.

Oh, sure I was a racist. I grew up in Virginia in the 1960s and early 1970s. We were all casually racist, at least until we got out of our little suburban bubble and actually met some black people.

I remember singing the Daniel Boone theme song:

    "Daniel Boone was a Man
    He was a big Man
But the bear was bigger so he ran like a ******
    up a tree"

    haw haw

    pure ignorance

(ps - I was also a Republican heheh)

They're just opening up themselves to liabilty.

The KKK has racist rallies through the streets of Washington DC and it is their legally protected right. You can not change some people and you only debase yourself by responding some times. This seems like one of those times.

What they're doing is stirring up trouble by inviting equally stupid and violent loonies to do something to the people they're "outing."

My take is, so long as those idiots posting this racist crap don't commit a crime, I don't care. It's the internet, it's always been nasty and stupid. I've seen stuff on forums that's way more despicable and disturbing than what those idiots wrote and just had to learn to deal with it.

It can require a strong constitution to become both seriously involved with such, and very cognizant of just how many exist. I will likely post more later, for now I will say I do think addresses, phone #'s and work places should be kept out, but names only depending on context and detail in such situations. That is, generally, in matters of such social interactions, whether in 3D or online, I'm of the position that if it came from you, you need to be ready to own it and should expect to be fully subject to (deal with) any consequences, even if you meant it to not be known to everyone.

Whenever you put something out there in a social (not professional) setting that you'd rather not be openly known, you should always have a thought in your head (yeah, right) that it may become such. Now you may have some relationship issues to address after such (like if some friend violated your trust in your view), but that's ancillary. Sometimes venting in a manner you would never mean "100% for real" is helpful, but it should always be regarded as taking a bit of risk.

Whether you expect your "secrets" or anonymity to be kept by electronics or flesh & blood, you should not count on it always being so, and be prepared for that before you speak in confidence, or at least be ready to stand up for what you said if it becomes public. Another suggestion is that if you are really worried about it being known, maybe you should take a closer look at the value of what you're thinking and why you're worried.

    Check yourself.

P.S. SpringfieldSkins, amigo, I don't know if you meant my experience in some professionally related capacity, some moderator capacity, or my own "outing" of some Facespace names recently, or something similar (ES-wise) being "outed." So if there's something you still want to know, you can let me know and if it's on topic and I want to respond, I will.

I thought that in your professional career you did something that related to psychiatric, social or related and kids. I don't know how I got that impression but it was in my head somewhere. I figured that would shed some insightful light on the subject.

...that and I found your racist election night posts and I was getting ready to hit the submit button on the website in question.

You're correct on the "professionally (across the board) related" stuff, but still don't know exactly what angle you're curious as to my response on--confidentiality/accountability re: social media for a certain (younger) age group v. adults, racist-themed dialog/thinking in that age demographic v. adults, or in general, or what. Besides, who cares what I think.

And I am glad someone on the internet is referring to my "racist election night posts."

You've already covered a lot in your last post. I was really wonder how serious you might take it as someone who works with kids that surely don't make the smartest of decisions. Kids being kids? Should they be punished and how so? Stuff like that.
