Last year showed that team records don't matter, and that it's an individual award. In that regard it's not really close.

Luck has performed very well by rookie standards, but average by NFL standards. RGIII is playing on the same level as the NFL heavyweights. So while they've both done well, they aren't close enough for co-award talk.

One thing I was thinking about was what if these guys, instead of being rookies, were in their 4th year? Obviously they're not, but humor me for a minute.

RGIII would viewed as a solid franchise QB, not gaudy, but hyper-efficient. Luck would have questions around him, as would any QB with a 55% completion rate that had 16 turnovers in 12 weeks. He'd be keeping his job because they're winning, but when wins started becoming scarce, he'd be in trouble (Sanchez with Jets got away with mid 70s ratings while they were winning, Vick with Eagles has a similar stat line to Luck and yet was getting questions and was probably on his way out even before his injury).

Interesting point, I definitely see what you're saying. Would people be happy if in his 4th year Griffin was considered just a solid franchise qb?

They'd probably want a little more (and I think by year 4 Griffin will be among the borderline elite if not straight up elite), but he's beating out guys like Stafford, Cutler, and even Eli. Those teams are generally happy with them. I think there's a few classes of QBs who've been in the league for a while. Guys like Skelton are pretty much non-starters. Guys like Sanchez aren't really starter quality, but as long as the team is winning they keep quiet. Guys like Stafford and Cutler are very good franchise quality guys, and usually held back by something else. Then there's almost elite guys like Roethlisberger, and then a half step above them are finally the elite with Rodgers, Brady, and the like. If RGIII was in the same camp as Cutler, Stafford, and Eli, I wouldn't have a problem. He's outplaying those guys pretty solidly though from an efficiency perspective, and actually has very similar stats to Roethelisberger, with almost identical TD/INT and comp. % (though Big Ben hasn't played in a few weeks).

As for Luck, he definitely has the potential to reach as high as he wants, but right now, he's doing a very Sanchezian "it's ok if I commit a lot of turnovers as long as we win" thing.

Yesterday, prior to our game my Rookie of the Year Rankings were:

    1. Robert Griffin III
    2. Russell Wilson
    3. Andrew Luck
    4. Doug Martin
    5. Alfred Morris

    Today?

    1. Robert Griffin III
    2. Russell Wilson
    3. Andrew Luck
    4. Doug Martin/Alfred Morris (seeing how they're statistics are nearly identical)

We are also forgetting Doug Martin in this discussion.

I'm just going to point out that, as of today, RG3 has a better traditional passer rating and QBR rating than Luck.

When we beat teams down can we call it a pistol whip?

I think someone would need a really monster year to win out against the QB class, and as good as Martin and Morris are, neither are really putting up the raw numbers to overtake RGIII and Wilson.

    My personal rankings are:
    RGIII
    Wilson
    Luck/Morris/Martin

I seriously have the last three tied. Luck is having a very good year by rookie standards, but so are Morris and Martin. Wilson is playing QB better than a rookie should, and RGIII is still above that.

I view Morris and Martin as similar too, I think Morris is the better, more consistent runner of the two at this point (5 games over 100 yards vs. Martin's 3, only 3 games below 4 YPC compared to Martin's 5). Martin's got a huge boost off his 251 yard, 10 YPC, 4 TD day against Oakland, but has otherwise been just good. That being said, Martin is more dangerous in the passing game, so that pulls them even.

Your award should be based on your own play, not the fact that the prior regime's coaches trotted out an atrocious QB which in turn dragged your otherwise playoff-calibre team into the dregs of the league's bottom-feeders.

We are a 2-14 team (or, likely, worse) with John Beck at the helm for 16 games. I would put a sizeable amount of cash on that without blinking an eye. The fact is, QB is an important position and when you trot out a guy who doesn't know how to play it drags down every aspect of your team.

Andrew Luck is having a great season for a rookie. Normally, that would be enough to earn him OROY in a landslide. Unfortunately, the following are occurring during the same year:

    - Doug Martin is on pace for 2000 yards from scrimmage
    - Russell Wilson is putting up numbers on par with what we'd expect from top 10 QBs
    - RG3 is having a season that projects to be similar to Mike Vick's 2010 near-MVP year (minus the 8-1 record, likely due to defensive woes)

Unfortunately for Luck, this isn't the year where we can look at stats and say, "That's good for a rookie." These are all legitimately great seasons for a player of any experience level. The fact that they are all rookies is just icing on the cake.

I think the reason Luck is still in discussions for ROY is due to Cam Newton. I think somewhere during the Cam Newton hype that occurred last year, this meme started to spread that Newton was having the best rookie QB season of all time. He had a fantastic year, for sure, but the best of all time? I think it's pretty easy to put Ben Roethlesburger and Dan Marino ahead of him, and an argument could certainly be made for Matt Ryan as well. I think, based on this idea that Cam Newton had the best rookie QB season of all time, that people who already liked Luck began to buy into this idea that Luck was basically Cam Newton except he was actually winning games. And if he's better than Cam Newton, then he's better than the best rookie QB of all time. Therefore, he's the best rookie QB of all time.

IMO, the discussion is between RG3 and Wilson, with Martin and to a lesser extent Luck still viable candidates contingent upon them stringing together 4 flawless games.

Gotta love how they won't post either Luck's TOs or RG3's rushing yards as part of their stats.
