So it's offensive to compliment these days ?

It was a little flirty, but not dirty or rude.

When I opened the thread I was expecting NO, NO, NO post from three people...I was not disappointed.

And I agree with Bang, she certainly in not gorgeous.

EDIT: I guess that last comment was out of line too.

absolutely it is out of line, and it saddens me that misogyny is so rampant in our culture that this kind of behavior is accepted by the majority here.

she is a professional trying to do her job. she does not need a suggestion of sexuality thrown in her face. what men don't understand is how the world never stops commenting on a woman from a sexual perspective even while she is supposedly on the job at her workplace or just walking down the street. it's a constant aggressive invasion, it's rude, and it is flatly sexist.

it does not matter if it is a "compliment" or not. it's inappropriate and unwanted aggression and men need to realize that it is not ok to act like that.

it's still inappropriate and misogynistic even if it's a "compliment." women do NOT want your unsolicited opinion on how they look, particularly in professional settings. men need to get that through their heads.

I couldn't disagree more. The sports "industry" is different because the leaders in that industry are young adults, not grizzled old CEOs or principals or doctors. When Stuart Scott interviews a player and uses names like "homie" or "playa" no one cares. So why can't a young man use his personality and call an older woman "gorgeous" as a clear, obvious playful thing? It has NOTHING to do with how far women have come in the sports world. Men and women are different and see each other differently. Unless women actually want that to change, there will always be a slightly different dynamic when a man is interacting with a woman.

You can be out of line or inappropriate without being offensive.

Nobody is saying the guy should be chastised for the comment, but that doesn't mean it was appropriate.

for the same reason it's racist to call obama a monkey, but okay to call GWB one: cultural context. when a man flirts with a woman in a professional environment, it's a manifestation of the institutionalized misogyny of our culture, where women are seen first as objects of desire, and judged immediately on that criteria above all else, regardless of whether they are secretary of state or a journalist or whatever. you may think it's a compliment to let her know she looks good but the reality is you are both debasing her and reinforcing male dominance.

I just think we over-analyze things way too much. There are boundaries and that's fine, but this was NOTHING. Someone mentioned Erin Andrews earlier...I actually would have had more of a problem if a player said something to her because they are in the same age bracket. This is the equivalent of seeing your friend's parents and telling the mom that she looks young or something. MT is almost 50.

So, does it work both ways? Can Erin Andrews call JJ Watt a beast or is that inappropriate because she's commenting on his physique and appearance? I despise double-standards.

it's not a double standard because men and women do not occupy the same position in this culture! "DOGS get to crap in public but I dont??? i despise double standards!"

Erin Andrews and Stuart Scott occupy the same position (give or take since I don't know exactly what their roles are at ESPN). I don't think one of them should play by different rules than the other. Dogs? Really...I'm sure the women you're defending will love that one.

Referring to someone as a beast in the context of the game and directly calling someone gorgeous and winking at them are not the same thing. The equivalent would be Erin Andrews opening an interview with Watt by saying "hey there sexy" and giving a raise of the eyebrows.

And to be fair, reporters ARE held to a higher professional standard than players.

Contrary to popular belief, women do like compliments.

    I thought so too

If they don't want to be subjected to my advances, they should stop saying suggestive stuff to me all the time like "Hello" or "Can I take your order?"

    I don't get women sometimes.

Well, hittable and gorgeous fall into two distinctly different categories, no?

    Michelle is a cute soccer-mom.
