You've got to start thinking about finding a replacement for Fletcher. I don't know if McClain is that guy, but I'd rather have Mclain and Fletcher and having to work it out, than reach the point where Fletch is done and we're either scrambling to fill in or having to watch him bumble around a shell of himself. But Fletch, Mcclain, Riley, Alexander seems like a pretty solid ILB corps. And then next year, you've got a lot of competition when Robinson comes back, which is always good.

This is a very nice and fortunate pickup for the 'skins at this point in the season.

He's 23 and has an world of talent, he can be an idiot but having a mentor with such an impressive résumé might save his career...
Can you imagine a LB corps of Kerrigan, Riley, McClain, and Orakpo next year? Ages 24, 24, 23, 26. That's a talented young LB corps with the potential to grow into something special.

Sure I can imagine that. But I still have a hard time believing that McClain (not John, the other) could be helpful. I don't know why, but even with all the talent he haves, that moves, to me, would have VINNY written all over it.

I might be wrong, but, that off field issue doesn't seem to fit our team right now.
RG3 does not stand for Rex Grossman 3rd year as a Redskins starting QB.

This is a team that went out of it's way to bring in guys of dubious character in Tanard Jackson and Brandon Merriweather and that relies heavily on two guys (Davis and Williams) that were straddling the line of a year's suspension, and probably guys with a couple DUIs that I'm not thinking of. We don't necessarily have all choir boys in here, he'd fit in just fine. Sitting in the LB meetings with Fletch (and Kerrigan, Riley, Alexander, and Orakpo for that matter) would probably do him some good.

If we can bring him in for cheap, maybe he improves the depth of the unit as he gets comfortable in our defense. If so, perhaps he is the starter next year for Fletcher which would be a fantastic pickup in that case given his talent, age and potential upside. If not, hopefully, he isn't too expensive and we can part ways.

I would be all for this move and I think it would be a big bonus to strengthen our LB corp both this year and going into next year if he sticks around.

Also, I agree with your concern about chemistry etc, but this is a business. These guys have all worked hard and as long as Rolando earns his playing time on the field I think the team will respect that and get behind him. There are enough leaders on defense to not let something like this be an issue, these guys are Pros, if you can improve, you do it and they understand.
This is the best post in the thread. I agree with everything you said and we need to do what we can to improve.

If I understand the situation correctly, McClain is still under his rookie contract of 40 million. So if we put in a waiver claim, we would have to assume the rest of the contract, correct? But if he goes through all 32 teams without a claim, we could then sign him as a free agent and only be required to pay him the last 5 games based on his veteran pay? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Not sure what the rules are on picking up a contract AFTER a player clears waivers but it would be intersting to know the actual rule. I dont think any team will put a claim on McClain due to his contract so he'll in essence be a free agent with a choice of team. Like others, I really liked McClain coming out of college, he was the prototypical ILB in a 3-4. Not sure what is up with his head but if he clears waivers I would not mind putting out some feelers since that talent level is hard to come by at this point in the season.

edit: Hell I'd even throw the Raiders a 7th round pick, IF AND ONLY IF, McClain is up for restructuring that contract (which i doubt; but if he wants to clear his name he may want to consider that option). LOLz on me trade deadline is long gone...

If we get him twitter says we would only have to pay 1.25 mil...next yr he's owed 5.8 mil we could redue or just release him no biggie

Not to derail the "Bryan Kehl" thread when there's already a McClain thread.... but there's no way he goes past all 32 teams without a claim. He won't even make it to us and if we were to pass on him in hopes of this scenario, Texans or Packers would pick him up and then if they didnt, the Patriots/Ravens would and they'd turn him in to an all star, all pro, all world...

Gotta get past kc,jax, philly, clev, car,sd,buff, tenn, det,az,nyj in that order so those teams you mentioned won't even get close, unless they all pass!
