Default WP-RGIII is vastly outperforming his offensive line

Posted by Brian Burke on December 5, 2012

It’s hard for numbers to capture the sheer excitement that Robert Griffin III brings to Washington football. Although it seems that his performance already has been sliced and diced in every possible way, there’s one more dimension of Griffin’s play that has gone overlooked in the Redskins’ recent three-game run: He is drastically outperforming his offensive line.

I’ve written before about measuring production using Expected Points Added (EPA). It’s a measure of net point productivity that accounts for down, distance and field position. It captures almost everything about a play, including runs, passes, turnovers and even penalties. Offensive line production can be measured with EPA too, but only indirectly.

I wish he would link to a more technical explanation of his (hopefully open-source) statistics.

Been making this point for quite some time, glad to see it backed up by a statistic.

I don't agree with the stat, Advanced stats has not been a very good site. I do think Griff is outperforming the Oline. Last season they allowed pressure on 37.1% & 2012 is similar at 35%. A majority of the pressure comes from LG and RT, rest of the line has been pretty good.

Compton promoted today, wonder if he is the answer at RT. He's highly rated in Kiper's 2012 draft book. Athletic -- good speed.

Montgomery and Trent are playing at an elite level. The stats back that up. The rest of the guys are average to below but I'm happy with having 2 great lineman at the moment

Thanks LL, was just getting ready to post the same thing. Stats don't tell the whole story, and I have been happy overall with our OL play, all things considered.

If our OL was simply atrocious, I seiously doubt Al Mo would be in a position to possibly set the ALL TIME Redskins rushing record. And your sig is awesome..."got him got him got him got him got him!".

Part of me thinks that's a defensive move with Locklear going down for the G-Men, thinking their may have been some interest in him forming.

There not simply atrocious, but they're average at best. Morris' statistics are indictment of his play, as he continues to turn contact behind the LOS into large gains, the scheme which creates confusions allowing for favoable match-ups in the running game, and RG3s threat to run.

If you don't like advanced stats, there's footballoutsiders too, and they rank the line 14 in run blocking, 25th in pass pro.

That has been in the works for awhile..Compton received a big raise a few weeks ago after a team tried to grab him off our PS. Compton had no intentions of leaving and we had no intentions of losing him.

Stupid question, but a player can say no if a team tries to sign them off a PS? I thought if a team claimed you, you couldn't stay on the PS, you had to be promoted.

IE, the reason we signed Aldrick last year.

Then would you say that Morris is having just as impressive of a season as RG3? Because I think he is.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say he gets the record. If he's anywhere close in the last two games, Kyle will make sure he gives him every opportunity to get it.
