Default Just the Stats: Washington Redskins vs. Baltimore Ravens

Continuing these threads, and why the hell not? I've done them the last three weeks and the Skins have won all three games, so we may as well keep it going even though I risk going to the well once too often. As before, rankings are from ESPN.com statistics, with an occasional assist for clarity from footballdb. There are no more bye weeks, so now we have true rankings.

Redskins Rushing YPG = 167.2 (1) vs. Ravens Rush Defense YPG = 125.8 (23) = Major Advantage Washington

    Redskins Passing YPG = 216.5 (21) vs. Ravens Pass Defense YPG = 246.5 (23) = Push

    Redskins Total YPG = 383.7 (7) vs.Ravens Total Defense YPG = 372.3 (25) = Advantage Washington

    Redskins Scoring PPG = 26.0 (8) vs. Ravens Defense PPG = 20.2 (8) = Push

Ravens Rushing YPG = 102.4 (23) vs. Redskins Rush Defense YPG = 91.5 (4) = Major Advantage Washington

    Ravens Passing YPG = 240.8 (15) vs. Redskins Pass Defense YPG = 299.0 (31) = Advantage Baltimore

    Ravens Total YPG = 343.2 (19) vs. Redskins Total Defense YPG = 390.5 (29) = Edge Baltimore

    Ravens Scoring PPG = 25.3 (9) vs. Redskins Defense PPG = 25.1 (23) = Advantage Baltimore

    Redskins Punting Average = 43.9 (25) vs. Ravens Punt Return Average = 9.8 (15) = Edge Baltimore

Ravens Punting Average = 47.3 (10) vs. Redskins Punt Return Average = 6.6 (29) = Major Advantage Baltimore

Redskins Kickoff Return Average = 23.9 (17) vs. Ravens Kickoff Return Average = 28.7 (2) = Advantage Baltimore*

    Redskins Turnover Margin = +11 (6) vs. Ravens Turnover Margin = +13 (5) = Push

    Redskins Penalties PG = 8.08 (30) vs. Ravens Penalties PG = 7.33 (28) = Push

    Redskins Sacks = 21 (26) vs. Ravens Sacks Allowed = 29 (22) = Push

    Ravens Sacks = 27 (17) vs. Redskins Sacks Allowed = 26 (17) = Push

    Redskins 3rd Down Conversion % = 32.9% (28) vs. Ravens 3rd Down Defense = 37.9% (14) = Advantage Baltimore

    Ravens 3rd Down Conversion % = 36.3 (22) vs. Redskins 3rd Down Defense = 44.8% (32) = Edge Baltimore

    Redskins 1st Downs PG = 21 (10) vs. Ravens 1st Downs Allowed PG = 21.9 (26) = Advantage Washington

    Ravens 1st Downs PG = 19.7 (16) vs. Redskins 1st Downs Allowed PG = 22 (27) = Edge Baltimore

*Just an FYI, I compared Kickoff Return Averages rather than Kickoff Average vs. Return Average, since there are so many touchbacks.

As for the designations at the end, it went like this. 1-6 ranks difference was a push, 7-12 ranks was an edge, 13-18 was an advantage, 19-24 was a major advantage, and 24+ is DOOM (a word I rather enjoy).

***This seems similar to the Giants game from last week. We enjoy significant advantages in the ground game and almost nowhere else, so our formula for winning should be similar. I pray we don't get killed by Ray Rice catching passes out of the backfield. Flacco and the receiving corp. don't scare me too much, which is saying something considering how atrocious our pass defense is, but the Ravens just aren't as prolific as the Cowboys/Giants. Hopefully this week plays out just like the last three.

I still say we need to get to Flacco early and often otherwise he does have receivers to hurt our very weak secondary. The one difference they have over the Giants is Rice is deadly out of the back field receiving while the Giants didn't have a back that can do that. On the defensive side of the ball, especially without Suggs (if he doesn't play) they have a very average to below average pass rush while the Giants arguably have the best front 7 in football. That is also huge.

Stats mean nothing really when it comes down to game time. Averages are just averages, ANYTHING can happen

I love it when you turn on some analysts and they tell you that a team's defense has been playing much better the last 5 weeks and you're supposed to think, cool, their D tightened up. I just heard that on NFLN about the Ravens. "The Ravens D has really been on track the last 5 games." Of course what they don't mention is the quality of the offenses they faced.

Ravens last 5 opponents and their Scoring rank

    Cleveland 25th
    Oakland 21st
    Steelers (no Ben) 20th
    San Diego 19th
    Steelers (no Ben) 20th

Gee, you don't say their defense looked better.

Watching, the NFL network which is the MAIN staple in this house. And if the Ravens let Charlie Batch carve them up, how in the hell, do they play on stopping RG3? RG3> C.Batch... Al Mo > Dwyer...; its going to be a long freaking day for the Ratbirds !!!!

The scariest thing about the stats in the OP is their 2nd rank KO return avg against our kicker who cant seem to find a way to get enough leg into the ball to drive it thru the endzone on kickoffs. All it will take is 1 game changing play from somebody like Jacoby Jones to break the game wide open and have the outcome not in our favor.
