I don't think its correct to frame the discussion over the Cousin's pick as BPA vs drafting for need for 2 main reasons:

    (1) Cousin, a developmental and hopefully an effective back-up QB, was a need pick

    (2) When most teams draft a player that player is the highest rated or BPA on their draft board otherwise they wouldn't select them; the discussion then isn't about BPA vs need, its about whether their evaluation of the player was correct

    OP question:
    What is Kirk Cousins worth?
Cousin's is an unproven developmental back-up QB. I think the FO office would be hard pressed to get a 5th round pick back.
But, if Cousin's progresses and plays well in real games he could raise his value and have greater return then his selection, but right now its just a hope.

He's a backup rookie QB that got drafted in the 4th round. I think he's worth exactly squat at this point.

There are plenty of "back-ups" in the NFL, that are worth more then Cousins at this point.

Thanks to Soup for the sig!

I see what you are saying and I guess you are right to an extent - but we had a serviceable backup QB in place in Rex who would have been fine as the number 2 at least this year. Longer term backup was clearly a need - but you could make that argument about just about every position on the team.

I just think that Cousins was just so far ahead of anyone else on their board at that point that they took him based on that irrespective of any perceived or real positional need. Speculation of course.

Cousins is valuable to us until we sign a reliable back for GR3.

Why are people so infatuated with trading our good players for what may or may not be a better player.

Who is supposed to back RG3 up next season or do you think we should just rid ourselves of all back-ups (because RG3 is superman incarnate) & if something goes terribly wrong, we can bring Randle El back.

    good grief.
Some rumors on the web about the Skins making a play for Vick if he doesnt land a starting gig somewhere. Kinda would make sense as the offense would not need to change alot with Vick as a backup. Although he would just get hurt in his first relief appearance.

If he ever attains 3+ rd value, I would trade him...not sure where he stands now, although I have a hard time believing that we couldn't get a 4th (where we picked him last year)....

Cousins isn't really worth trading at this point. The Redskins really need a backup QB and it would take at least a second round pick to make it worthwhile. Nobody is going to offer that at this point because he's unproven. I hope he never has to play a regular season game unless we are blowing another team out or we are resting Griffin for the playoffs. The best we can hope for is him becoming one of those guys that thrives in preseason. He's not going to re-sign here as a backup if he feels like he has options. Hopefully, he'll show something by his fourth season so our investment pays off.

Like someone said early, I think teams are done giving picks/signing the unproven back up QBs...

I side more with the evaluations of the rest of the league that made Cousin's available when we picked. Either way there is some waste of resources going on in the front office concerning the back-up QB. If we have Cousins active why waste a roster spot on Rex? If you're gonna have a roster spot for Rex then why not wait til next year to draft or sign a back-up QB?

As long as he's still under contract, we need to put him in against a *****y defense so he can pull a Matt Flynn. Then we can trade him to the Cardinals for a premium.

As others have said, he is worth much more to us as a backup than to anyone else currently.

For those who would be happy to trade for maybe a 4th or even a 3rd round pick, why on earth would we do that? We may as well just have picked someone else and got some use out of them (backing up another position?) if all you want is your 4th round pick back.

Vick is not smart enough to play in the offense the Skins run. He would take hit after hit and probably throw 50 intceptions. The offense would have to be tqesked a bunch more for him then any other QB, including Cousins. Vick is just dumb......period!

Cousins typically aren't in high demand outside of West Virginia and Arkansas.

The Patriots had a Superbowl QB who was the 1st overall pick in the draft, but still kept 4 (yes, 4!) QBs on the roster to hang on to a developmental prospect...some lousy 6th rounder named Tom something...Blakely...Bradlee...Bravelee...

Guys who want us to trade Cousins are the same kinds of fans who wanted us to trade Betts because we had Portis. Guess what, guys get hurt in the NFL. We've been so bad for so long because of Snyderatto syndrome - blowing our entire wad on starters instead of budgeting for depth. Offseason championships galore; irrelevant Decembers as common as sunsets.

And guess what else - we're going to draft another RB with one of those precious draft picks - I guarantee it! And 3 weeks into the schedule everyone will be asking what we can get by trading him....
