My prediction is KC will be similiar to Flynn, In a few years we might be able to get a 3rd or maybe even a 2nd round pick for him. Hell, Campbell was rewarded with a 4th

I really like Kirk as a person, teammate and player...I think the smartest thing to do is keep him....

If you're gonna have a roster spot for Rex then why not wait til next year to draft or sign a back-up QB?
Why have 3 QBs...I mean, I bet the Steelers wish they had used that extra roster spot for something else. And how can Russell Wilson be any good when every team in the league passed on him twice.

Sure, but what quarterbacks that are in the draft this year would you suggest as a better option than Cousins that would be available around the 4th round?

I just think that Cousins was just so far ahead of anyone else on their board at that point that they took him based on that irrespective of any perceived or real positional need. Speculation of course.
    This may be accurate.

Although, there are reports that we wanted Wilson in the 4th. But he was gone, so we went Cousins. That said, those two may have been head and shoulders above everyone else on our draft board.

Exactly why have 3 QBs on your roster when 1 QBs doesn't dress? its a waste of a roster spot.

    BTW-
You should do an extremeskins search on my opinions about Russell Wilson, that way the assumption you make above wouldn't be so astronomically offbase.

I'm not against the Cousins pick - I was surprised by it at the time but if he was clearly the highest ranked player on our board (speculation) then I can totally see why we made the pick. I think he wil develop into a good NFL QB and I'm fine with him as our primary backup

Fair questions. I think they expected Rex to be the backup and Cousins inactive but the way Cousins played in preseason plus I assume his practice performance changed that plan. Why we kept Rex as the 3rd QB all year then inactive at the cost of his salary is a good question. Insurance?

At this point, Kirk Cousins is worth the most to us. It's only maybe in 2-3 years when people have some more game tape on him.

Hopefully we will be blowing out opponents by then so he can get some regular season work against NFL defenses and then we can use him as trade bait, but I'd definitely take him over Rex at this point just because we know what Rex can/cannot do.
Nice post. At this point cousins is a very promising backup. That's where we need him most. In a few years when we can bring in the next promising backup and he has developed we can talk trade. He'll have more value and we will be better prepared to move on without him.

    A few things I can't believe I'm reading:

    1. Did someone describe our draft pick cupboard as "bare?" We have seven picks, we're down a 1st rounder and up a 5th. This isn't the 2003 NFL draft where we had three picks total and spent them on Taylor Jacobs, Derrick Dockery, and Gibran Hamdan. That was a bare cupboard. We're fine right now.

    2. I do not believe we don't have an extra 6th for McNabb this season. He had to meet some performance incentives with the Vikings for the Skins to get the second 6th rounder, and I don't think he did.

    3. I'm not going to quote the poster to avoid shaming him, but anyone skimming should know we have someone on this board who typed the following sentence: "If he was selected by the Shanahans, and in the 4th round, I think that's a pretty strong indication that he has the talent and potential to be a franchise QB like Griffin."

Good....God.....some.....people. Cousins is worth less to any other team over us currently. The only way his value goes up is with exposure and reps, and that only happens in pre-season or if RG3 gets hurt. Given that alternative, I say keep him and let him develop.

Why does everyone assume we drafted him to use as trade bait? Is it not possible that we just needed a capable backup?

Whaaaaaa? No way! Wait a minute. We draft players to keep them? I thought this a coupon swap meet of football players.

Based on most in this thread, it would seem that we should be trading everyone who isn't on the field week in & week out for people who should be on the field week in & week out.

Before long, people are going to be talking about RG3 & Alfred Morris like this.

One thing that bothers me is the amount of time the back-up gets to work with the 1st teamers.
The norm is for the starting QB to get most, if not all of the reps; in a game, if the starting QB goes down, there is a significant drop-off in the production, and more often than not the back-up looks lost.

Cousins is young and can throw the ball; he might not be as athletic, agile, and fast as RGIII, but he could run most plays RGIII does, which is the so-called bread and butter of the offense; couple that with receivers who know his tendencies, and its a positive outlook for him if he needs to replace RGIII.

We do not need to see Rex part deu, tre, etc, but someone who can step in and be 80% of RGIII, and he is the guy to do it...

He cannot execute the play concepts that are key to our current offense: read option.

It was not a real question - it was a smartass response to a previous post.
And Green was end of the 1st rd...one slot after Marino.
Wilson was a 3rd rounder, and the steal of the draft.
