I love Kirk Cousins. Not only has he performed well but he seems like an overall great kid. Smart, down to earth, hard worker, great attitude, all that. He's going about this all the right way. And I wouldnt trade him for less than what I would consider a king's ransom. Which to me, at this point, is a first round pick or two second rounders.

That said, if he keeps performing this well in spot starts and in preseason we can't keep him throughout his whole rookie deal. For one, it just doesnt make good business sense. RG3 is the future, and while having a great backup is obviously valuable, especially with Robert's style of play, it's nowhere near as valuable as what you can get for a young, promising QB on the open market. And secondly, it just wouldn't be fair to Kirk. We've clearly sold him on the opportunity he has here to perform well in a backup role to eventually get a chance to start somewhere else down the line (or at the very least he's sold himself on that). Even as good as his attitude is, I can't see him being happy in that role for 4 years, and I don't think I could blame him.

But at least for now, I'm going to be happy with having the best tandem of young QBs in the NFL, without a hint of drama about it in the air.

I understand what you're saying, but I could care less about Kirks career anywhere else other than here. He is our fail safe. He is invaluable right now for many, many reasons listed above. I wouldn't trade him, at all. He did exactly what he should have done last week. Come in and win the one game he's asked to, because the #1 is hurt. Invaluable.

Well, there's that I suppose. But football is a business.

The more pressing aspect of him starting is that he's only under team control for 4 years. So, if you don't think he'd re-sign after his rookie contract, you're probably going to want to trade him before his final year. Trying to trade him months before he becomes a FA would result in a much lower return. I think we have next year to sort this all out, but think we'd be wise to pull the trigger by the trade deadline of 2014, if at all.

I buy into your Philly/Kolb model. And would use that as the ideal. Philly got the best of both worlds - Kolb filled in for McNabb when he got banged up AND they got the max trade for him after four years. I doubt Kolb would have brought that kind of price after his first year, as I doubt Cousins would get anywhere near the price we could get for him in a couple of years. Plus Cousins, like Kolb, will be very valuable in relief as he already has been.

But the first year is so early, and so doubtful to get that over-the-top offer.

this 100%. Be a team player KC. If we had to trade him i would hope its a trade like the Kolb deal.

to me its about that superbowl ring and money. the franchise has money and we working on that ring KC.

oh snap i am no longer a waterboy. lol

Why not get them throw in a CB or two also?

The FO isn't stupid. If they receive an offer they can't refuse, or are able to negotiate for one, it would be hard to say no (or at least think long and hard about it). Would that be two 2nds, a 1st, or a 1st and change? I have no idea.

Shanahan/Allen are in a great position. They've got a young, reliable backup with starting capabilities, on the cheap with several years left on his contract.

As far as valuing Cousins, it's hard to say what a QB desparate team would be willing to offer. We've seen teams like MN use a top 15 pick on Ponder when he was barely mocked as a 1st rounder. Same goes for Locker. Weeden was a 1st rounder. The upcoming QB class is regarded as weak. And there are plenty of teams that could use an upgrade at the position.

I think we're in a no lose situation

Just saw his new haircut. He looks athletic as heck now. So much better than the mop he had before. His asking price just went up. Two #1's.

If we trade him, then what? Who becomes our #2 QB? We'd have to draft another guy and groom him again, in the 3rd or 4th round. And hope he's as good as Kirk, as good of a team player with a good rapport with RG3 and they can learn off each other. Is it worth giving up 2 4ths for a 2nd and a questionmark at backup?

I trust Shannys ability to draft after the 1st round.

I would assume the FO would have to be blown away. I am thnking 2 2nd for me personally. If someone offered that, I am not sure you can turn it down. Going into this upcoming draft with 3
2nd rounders would be a thing of beauty.

That would be interesting...you could try to add 3-4 starters (3 2nds and a 3rd) or you could package them to move into the 1st round. It will be interesting.

    Couple of things.

First I would be shocked if anyone offered us a 1st round pick for Cousins based on less than 5 quarters of football. Second unless someone does offer us a 1st for him (or a player worth a 1st in his mid 20's) I would not make a trade. We need a quality backup - if RGIII does go down you don't want your season to tank because you don't have a viable backup and that's worth more than an unknown rookie you draft with a 2nd round pick IMO.

What the threshold is, none of us knows. There's obviously an offer out there that would be enough for the front office to want to move Cousins and improve other areas of the team. One thing to consider about keeping him as QB2. If he's as good as we think and continues to show that, we have him for 3 more years. He'll start somewhere with his second contract. So, sometime AFTER next year, you might want to explore your trade offers before the market dries up (no one is going to give up much for something who is about to become a FA).

Grossman is the ideal backup in terms of his situation. He's 32 which means he could be here for 6 more years possibly. He's started for a while and should realize by now that he's a backup. A QB who accepts that is easier to keep on the roster. As much as I'd love to keep Cousins as long as possible, there's a good chance that someone will tab him as their starter once he's up for a new contract so we can't keep him here forever.
