Thread: Are we out of line? The Yellow Canoe Controversy

Redskins Are we out of line? The Yellow Canoe Controversy

My friend and I have been getting some (limited) blow back after DeAngelo Hall tossed us his helmet and a few blogs picked up the story. For a couple of years, we've been getting dressed up and head out to games. We're big fans and just love to get silly and cheer for our team. This year, I moved up next to the tunnel and we've been getting a lot more attention.

No one has said anything to us about the costumes until Sarah Kogod wrote this piece recently in the Washington Post online blog. And to be clear, all other blogs and reports on the story have been positive and in a good light. Even Ms. Kogod's piece isn't that terribly bad.

I just wanted to clear some things up. We're not making a statement when we get all painted up and head into the stadium. We're not intending to denigrate Native Americans, and our intentions lie solely in cheering for our team while looking as silly as we can. We think it's fun.

Spot Check: Do you think it's inappropriate?

The soldiers gave three cheers as they urged their tired horses north across the uneven hills. Some of the mounts, exhausted after a week of almost continual marching, began to lag behind; others, spurred on by their enthusiastic riders, began to edge past the regiment's commander. "Boys, hold your horses," Custer cautioned; "there are plenty of them down there for us all."

People like her need to shut up. You're obviously not doing this as a way to hate on native americans (which she calls Indians, thought that was supposed to be wrong huh?), you're cheering on your team and psyched you got that helmet. She's just trying to get attention.

Huh, that was you? I remember seeing that on tv and asking the other guys in the room, "What's a Cardinals fan doing here? Do we have this on the right game?". I don't really see any resemblence to Americans, Native or otherwise. It looks like you had a tub of makeup and figured, "Why not use it all tonight?".

I wish someone could explain at just what point in history we did whatever heinous thing we did to turn the Post against us.

Their agenda filled ongoing campaign to take any and every opportunity to slight anything and everything about this organization and anything connected to it has gone that far past being irritating it's not even on the same Continent, never mind zip code.

The Washington Post. Washington's Visiting Team Newspaper.

    Hail.

I love when people get offended by proxy for other groups... when it has no meaning for them at all. She's just looking for attention.

I don't think it's inappropriate but I don't think that author linked is calling you out either. It's just a tie-in talking about people's fandom with regard to the Washington Redskins. There's no judgement that I read.

    Keep at it.

There was nothing about your picture on the jumbotron that made me think about Native Americans. There is nothing about your face paint that resembles Native American culture as far as I know, and I have a BA in history. Native Americans don't own the face painting, especially not for fighting purposes.

Yellow canoe is harmless but follows the Redskins theme.

I wonder if Kogod realizes that the term "Indian" is inappropriate, geographically incorrect, and I wonder if she is Native American herself or if she is just assuming some outrage. Although, she didn't seem to have outrage, but was definitely looking to stir conversation by trying to make a connection. I would have looked elsewhere.

Kogod continually has veiled, negative tones written into her "columns" on the Bog. Its just what she does. Keep supporting the team the way you are, who gives a **** what she thinks?
