Default Question on tie breaker scenario with Cowboys

I apologize ahead of time since I'm sure that this discussion has already been had. I just have a pretty simple question. If the Skins beat Cleveland and Philly, but lose to Dallas....and If Dallas loses to Steelers, but beat the Saints and Skins, Dallas would tie us at 9-7 obviously. I believe we would have same division and conference record as Dallas. Does the tie-breaker then go to wins\losses against the same opponents? If so, am I correct that Dallas would own that tie breaker against us?

Basically I'm just trying to find a way that we don't have to beat Dallas in that last game to make it.

    Thanks!

I also realize that meanwhile we need Chicago to lose two out of three games.

After division record comes common opponent and we would lose on that I believe. It's annoying that Cleveland and Cincy both coughed up wins against the Cowboys and that's the only thing keeping them alive. I had written them off after Thanksgiving, but the fact is the Cowboys game looks like a must win (unless the Cowboys lose to both the Steelers and Saints, but the Saints aren't good for anything lately).

If that would happen, we would both be 4-2 in the division and 7-5 in the conference, so it would either go off our record against common opponents or strength of victory more than likely. Right now the cowboys are 4-2 in common games so far and the redskins are 3-4 with the last common team being the browns. If your scenario would play out the cowboys would finish ahead of us because of the better win/loss record in common games.

Thanks man, that's what I thought, but I was hoping someone would tell me that I was wrong. Dez is killing me by not having surgery on that finger, haha. I can't take this.

    I agree!

Ok Ok, I know this is not realistic right now, buuuuuut the best the Giants can have for divison record is 3-3...sooo if they were to lose to Atlanta and Baltimore, our game against Dallas could be winner is division winner and loser is wildcard. Also including the Bears losing two out of 3 I suppose.

I'm sure that I'm not the only one who is driving myself insane with this, haha

Yep, the Dallas game could likely be a must win for us regardless. As far as Dallas is concerned it doesn't matter much to them if we win or lose vs the Browns and it doesn't matter much to us if they win or lose vs the Steelers.

Now, it WOULD be helpful if we win the next two and Dallas loses the next two... In that case, we'd clinch finishing ahead of them no matter what.

For the sake or argument, here is a scenario I could see playing out for week 17 IF we win the next two.

--Redskins enter week 17 at 9-6 having beaten the Browns and Eagles

--Cowboys enter week 17 at 8-7 having split with the Steelers and Saints

--Giants enter week 17 at 9-6 having split with the Falcons and Ravens

--Bears enter week 17 at 9-6 having split with the Packers and Cardinals

--Seahawks enter week 17 at 10-5 having beaten the Bills and 49ers

--49ers enter week 17 at 9-5-1 having lost to Patriots and Seahawks

Our game with Dallas would almost certainly be flexed to Sunday Nighy due to all the ramifications it would carry.

Under the above scenerio we would be in a position to clinch the East with a win. Dallas would need to win and for the Giants to lose.

Prior to our game we would have the opportunity to clinch a playoff spot with a Bears loss in Detroit. If that happened, we would be in the playoffs before our game kicked off.

That is one scenerio where we could lose to Dallas and still make the playoffs.

oh man I didn't even know that was the case. I had written the boys off as well. No way they should have beaten the browns but they got some serious help from the Refs. Did you see the Pass Interference call at the end of the game. It got them in field goal range to get it to overtime. The Bengals game, well good for them, it was an emotional win but there is a lot of talk about issues in the locker room (Jerry Jones, etc). I hope they fall apart. They won't beat the steelers and hopefully the Saints can get the win. They use to beat the Cowboys regularly but recently... they have been pretty bad.

No you're not the only one, I'm sure you're just as excited as the rest of the skins fans who are nervously awaiting what our fate beholds. But I say **** fate and let's grab the goddamn bull by the horns, **** it into submission and then beat the **** out of the cowboy who rode it in for the ****ing division crown!! Let us pray!! lol

I believe 49ers would take it over us since the worse they can end up is 9-6-1 and we would be 9-7 with a loss to Dallas. They would have one less loss. Instead, it would be nice if 49ers beat Seattle and Seattle loses to either Buffalo or the Rams. Tied at 9-7 with Seattle, we'd have better conference record I believe.

As ridiculous as a game like that would be, I just hope we get to that point. Somehow, I have faith that if we get to 9-6 coming home we will make it happen.

Now that all of the scenarios are out on the table...

We aren't going to lose to Dallas so it's a moot point.

I would be exhilarated and petrified at the same time. When is the last time we played them in a true elimination game for both teams, the 1982 playoffs?

I see where I made an error...I was forgetting that the Giants would pass us if we lost and they won. So yes, under my scenario above, we'd need the Giants to lose to Philly in order for us to lose and still make it.

The scenarios where we lose to Dallas and make the playoffs are a stretch unless Dallas loses to Pitt and NO.
