see I disagree with that. I personally feel that the issue of guns gets brought up because its easier to blame then than figure out what to do from a psychological or screening process. I also disagree that most agrees with the idea of psychology being as much of a problem as guns. I think most think guns are more of a problem thus taking blame from the clown that did the crime.
Do you have an answer of what to do from a psychological standpoint? Would you agree with having every gun owner submit to a psychological evaluation before buying any gun, and as part of a gun license renewal on a yearly basis? Is there any doubt that the NRA would lobby the defeat out of that bill on some sort of "take our guns away/socialism/brainwashing from the government" campaign.
You can say we should deal with the psychological aspect, but its not going to be agreed upon either. There need to be common sense gun restrictions, and the NRA and a bunch of people on the far side of the debate shout "they are trying to take my guns away so the government can harm me" from the top of the mountain at the thought of ANY gun control.
What would A World Without Lawyers be like?
"This wouldn't of happened if they let us start arming the teachers and pupils"
this is a legit quote from NBC interview
WOW
I think if you ask anyone they will tell you that in any given incident like this the person is more to blame than the tools used to carry out his/her sinister machinations. Gun control is just an avenue of prevention that can be applied to all of these situations whereas psychological solutions are both more complex and tend to vary on a case by case basis, making them harder for the average layperson to discuss.
For gun owners in here, what's a legal, real life purpose for owning an assault rifle? Why are they sold legally? Why can't those who want to arm themselves own pistols and shotguns? Wouldn't those provide adequate protection and allow one to hunt?
It's not sarcasm...real question. I don't know all the reasons one would own a gun.

From the UN then:
Assault in 2010
UK and Wales - 936 per 100k
US - 250 per 100k
Rape in 2010Definition: 'Assault' means physical attack against the body of another person resulting in serious bodily injury; excluding indecent/sexual assault; threats and slapping/punching. 'Assault' leading to death should also be excluded.
UK and Wales - 28.8 per 100k
US - 27.3 per 100k

Yup, enough is enough, every gun owner should have a thorough background check including medical/psych screening. The psych screening should be done periodically.

Cause it's fun to go to the range and blast away at targets? Might not be the reason you're looking for, but then again I doubt any reason given would satisfy your curiosity. But no one goes hunting with an assault rifle.
Same as it's fun to go shoot flying clay targets with a shotgun.

I would like to point out that of course it starts with the person. It's like the old saying, guns don't kill people, people kill people. You need to cure the person if you really want to stop senseless killings.
HOWEVER, I believe that if you solely focus on how to cure people then you are avoiding the fact that guns play a tremendous role in these tragedies. Gun advocates want to avoid this fact and point at the people. But what measures would be affective at curing this horrible disease of gun violence? You can't eliminate social and psychological factors, they are too tremendous. Inequality, depression, loneliness, mental illness.....these are factors that lead people to kill and go on rampages. You can try to help cure them, but eliminating them is impossible. They aren't tangible enough.
What is tangible? GUNS. We have the ability to restrict them. Can we eliminate them? No. But the main fact is that guns are dangerous. There is no real reason they should exist.
