This is an interesting topic for me... as a kid I remember playing war, being shown bullets and thinking how awesome they are, etc. Now I am grown up a bit, did some reading on history of violence, etc, and pretty much despise all things that have the purpose of causing harm... yet I still feel a bit of that childhood fascination and coolness of guns. I then feel like I need to remind myself that war is ugly, that instruments of death are not cool, etc. (yes they are necessary for professionals)

I think that humans have this thing about forgetting the ugliness of war and violence, and ending up glorifying it.

I bet these shooters imagined themselves to be quite cool macho fellas walking and shooting with their guns and all. They imagined themselves doing that many times and thought they looked really cool while doing it. Maybe things would be different if we, as a society, had a widespread assumption that such imagery was pretty ****ing stupid and not cool at all.
I agree, Call of Duty and the other games are just not cool, have they linked this lunatic to video games yet? Wouldn't be surprised if they do.

Neither would I. Considering the majority of young adults/teens all have played or do play video games.

    How about this:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Team_Fortress_2
Team Fortress 2 does not attempt the realistic graphical approach used in other Valve games on the Source engine such as Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source and Day of Defeat: Source. Rather, it uses a more stylized, cartoon-like approach "heavily influenced by early 20th century commercial illustrations"

CBS put this report out 15 minutes ago.

    http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2012/12/...-call-of-duty/

Surprise!! Parents need to stop buying these games for their kids.

Wlasuk told The Sun that Adam Lanza and his older brother, Ryan, were “fans of the military” and had mounted posters everywhere in the basement showing assorted military equipment. They were experts on guns that dated back as far as the 1940s through playing “Call of Duty,” he said in the report.

I accidentally posted this in one of the other related threads, so I figured to bring it here where it belongs.

I have a question for the thread though.. one idea getting a lot of support is arming teachers or at least one member of the faculty.
OK, so I'd rather not do that, but I WOULD be alright with a cop who's duty is to be in the school.

High schools have them already in many cases. People would feel safe, there would be an armed trained public servant on site, school crime would go down i have to think.
Plus, the opportunity for the police dept. to interact with the community in a non-emergency situation is invaluable. Many city neighborhoods where cops started to walk beats again have reported drops in crime, and a general advancement of the community spirit.
In the other thread some have mentioned cost, and that is a thing to consider,,, but overall, i think the money it would take is nothing compared to the benefit.

    Why not a school policeman?

If a teacher is trained properly and already being paid by the school system, whats the difference between the cop and the school teacher besides cost?

People make it sound like the teacher would leave the gun laying in plain site allowing a student to pick the gun up and cause harm.

All these mass shooters are die hard gamers. Every one of them. The joker, klebold, all of them. thousands upon thousands of hours slaughtering people in an alternate reality that gets more realistic every day.

But, I'm assured by resident ES experts that desensitization is not real and that "I play video games and I'm fine". So, that's good. Glad it's not an issue

The soldiers gave three cheers as they urged their tired horses north across the uneven hills. Some of the mounts, exhausted after a week of almost continual marching, began to lag behind; others, spurred on by their enthusiastic riders, began to edge past the regiment's commander. "Boys, hold your horses," Custer cautioned; "there are plenty of them down there for us all."

Obviously it's the guns....nothing good will come from sitting in front of a TV blowing peoples brains out, I don't care who you are.

They play just as much if not more in Korea, Japan, Europe, etc. But those places don't have nearly the gun violence problem the US seems to have.

Yes, they do not have nearly the gun culture there that we have in the US

Which means that video games are fine, of course. Nothing to see there.

    We should keep a list:

    Guns
    Lack of mental health care
    Divorced parents
    Military posters
    Military clothing
    Video games
    The media
    Lack of armed teachers
    Americans

As we discuss concern over proliferation and availability, or of the destruction of the 2nd amendment, high-capacity magazines and semi-automatic rifles sales are through the roof (again) out of fear (again) that they will be banned.

One side of the matter has a nice legal method of reacting with an enormous upraised finger, regardless of dialog.

This is not even remotely some pathetically dysfunctional reaction. It's what a sane, pragmatic, clear-thinking person would do in response. Just imagine the deadly gravity that you might be the guy who doesn't get one and everyone around you has them.

Or that even if you have one or more, you might not be able to get another---not that we know if that will come to pass, but who can afford to risk either the possibility or certainly the reality.

But if you don't, and then it comes...there you are...with no, or no extra, semi-automatic rifle with a high capacity clip. No way in this land is that safe OR sane.

    Hopefully you all got yours.

And if someone questions your choice, just smile a private smile, knowing when the **** hits the fan, you'll have yours and that fool will be either be very sorry or worse.

"Captain, it's a viewpoint--not one of ours! We're under attack!"

"I see it, ensign! Engage amygdala! Transfer all power from frontal lobes!

Suspend critical thinking field! Go to course heading of reflexive response 101 at full bias!
    Now!'Enter' at will!"

"It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so."

    You forgot one.

Allowing a violent video game to baby sit a mentally sick individual after teaching him how to fire your bush master.

The kid knew how to tape banana clips together, I'm assuming his mom didn't teach him this, is this an option in call of duty?
