we have a problem, a big one that isn't getting better.
I believe that the proliferation of guns and the way in which guns are viewed as playthings, or status symbols, by many are the primary contributors. But there is something else about American culture and society that generates more anger and disaffected people than other comparable societies.

And while school shootings are dreadful, their loss of life is tiny compared to the everyday deaths from guns. By all means, do what's appropriate to gun ownership to reduce the ease of spree mass killings, but don't ignore the 80 or more people who die every day from guns because of culture and societal issues.

26 died last Friday at Newton. Since then, about 600 have died elsewhere across the country from guns.

we have a problem, a big one that isn't getting better. Patting ourselves on the back because other countries have big problems does nothing to solve anything. Pointing out that they have problems doesn't sdolve anything.
Minimizing our problem because they have problems too? What is the point?

And I think you are completely missing the point of what he posted and what I posted. Seems like in a bit of a rush to "disagree" on this one. At no point did that post or my post attempt to diminish problems in the US by saying "it happens there also". In fact it is quite the opposite. It is saying that we have a real problem here compared to the rest of the world and it isn't JUST LIMITED to availability of guns. As many have said the guns are just a tool. A very effective tool. A tool that allows people to do more damage than they could otherwise. For that reason restrictions should be placed on them. But the way I read FletchLives post, and I don't know him/her or want to speak for motives, is that we have a pretty significant problem related to the rest of the world.

On another note. The primary distinction between the weapon in this case, and Aurora, and a "military grade" weapon is the availability of "burst" fire. For those that don't know what that is it means that you place a M16/M4 on burst, squeeze the trigger, and 3 bullets come out. The military went away(largely) from "auto" because of the difficulty of delivering well aimed shots and effectively using the ammunition available. Basically a shooter puts the weapon on auto, squeezes the trigger, and before he/she knows it all the bullets are gone....and they didn't really hit anything because they lost control of the weapon after the first round exited. In the scenarios of Aurora and Newtown the loss of life would have been LESS, in my opinion, if these untrained shooters would have attempted to use "auto". The single shot option places a control on the shooter that presents an opportunity to re-aim. A shooter on "auto", would have put a LOT of holes in walls, floors, ceilings. Not making an argument for legalizing that....just pointing out some general information.

Fair enough, you're probably right. It's entirely likely I've misunderstood.

Wow. Probably one of the most down right bizarre press conferences you will ever see. It will be everywhere online soon.

Well, if anyone here had ANY hope that the NRA was going to even think about coming to the table to discuss common sense gun control measures, that is over. They wont even think about it.

In a rambling 10 minute attack, the CEO of the NRA called for guns in every single school in the country and blamed everyone and everything in this country for gun violence, besides guns.

I'm not sure why I was hopefully they'd come to the table.

Wow, that was an amazing meltdown on live TV. I think they just called for a huge expansion of the Gov't while blaming Mortal Kombat, the Media and everybody else under the sun.

    cbsnews.com

    cnn.com
All with news stories already on the NRA press conference.
    Foxnews.com mysteriously silent.
What're you cackling at, fatty? Too much pie, that's your problem!

So the NRA's idea to just give everyone more guns. That'll work!

Not sure what you guys are looking at. There is an article on the homepage of Foxnews.com. And nothing on Cnn.com. The foxnews article and the washingtonpost article are about the same...the guy said armed cops in every school.

Sorry but you are wrong. In close quarters with no place to hide like a classroom or closet where one group was found there wasn't a lot of need for accuracy. Full auto would be that much more devastating. He may have been able to wipe each room out that much faster and gotten to more rooms before the police arrived.
