I believe that the proliferation of guns and the way in which guns are viewed as playthings, or status symbols, by many are the primary contributors. But there is something else about American culture and society that generates more anger and disaffected people than other comparable societies.
And while school shootings are dreadful, their loss of life is tiny compared to the everyday deaths from guns. By all means, do what's appropriate to gun ownership to reduce the ease of spree mass killings, but don't ignore the 80 or more people who die every day from guns because of culture and societal issues.
26 died last Friday at Newton. Since then, about 600 have died elsewhere across the country from guns.
