I looked at QBs making a championship game or maybe it was actually SuperBowls. QBs taken in the first round were more likely to get to that level then QBs taken eslewhere, whent taking into account the number of players taken. And it was even more dramatic for top 5 picks. I forget the span of years I looked at.

But when you take into the account the number of players picked, I think your chances are much better with a 1st round pick.

Now with that said, how many 4th/5th round picks is Griffin equivalent too? If you tell me I can take Griffin or 2 4th round and a 5th round QB and have value left (i.e. picks that I can use to address other positions), then things start to even out I think.

In terms of a single pick, I have no doubt taking the early QB is the better bet. In terms of real value, especially with the new CBA limiting rookie contracts making those picks worth more, I'm not sure that's really true.

    Why? What's the point?

Shanahan is doing a fine job. He's doing what he was hired to do. The team's culture has definitely changed. the methodology of the front office has certainly changed, and the team is getting stronger and better, in many areas by leaps and bounds.
We've added eleven points to our average score... up from 16 points a game to 27 points a game.
We've got the 4th ranked offense in the league.. 5th in scoring, first in rushing.
The character of our team has changed considerably. We've got leaders here now, young players who want to earn it, not old vets looking to cash in and relax.

Considering the depth of our problems when he took over, and the unusual circumstances of the offseasons in which he's had to work this out,, I'd say he's earned a solid A-
I'm satisfied that we've made the right moves and are on the right path toward extended success.

Not there yet, but on the way

I don't remember the numbers exactly, but a few years ago I went back to the 1950s for my data and established a minimum number of Super Bowls or Championships to define "dynasties."

Only two #1 QB picks were involved, Aikman and Bradshaw -- and Bradshaw was inconsistent. His team carried him to the HOF.

Bart Starr and Joe Montana had about 14 championships on their combined resumes. Neither was a #1 pick.

In our contemporary dynasty, Brady has three SB wins.

I didn't go back nearly that far. I think anything post-1985 and probably even post-early 1990s is irrelevant.

The game (the importance of the QB) has changed and so has scouting.

The big though is you have to take into account how many people were picked. How many non-#1 QBs were in the league for 3 years and then gone.

For every Brady, how many Jordan Palmers are there?
