I think he's extremely limited in how good he can be, but he CAN put together a mediocre defense when given the right tools. With the way our offense is playing, that may be enough to make us an elite team.
If a DC becomes available that we absolutely cannot pass on, I think Haslett is and should be replaced. If not, then I guess we roll with another year. I don't expect us to be a top defense in the NFL regardless of what players we bring in if he is still DC, however.
No thank you.
The change after the Carolina game can be attributed to a myriad of things (players attitudes, RG3 becoming a captain, the Coach's comments and so on.) But there are certainly better DC's than him. And I for one would like to see a fired up young DC who can bring some passion to this team.
"Tarnish notte the majesty of my TOWER OF HATS!"
I'd like to see Romeo Crennel brought in if Kansas City fire him.
To an extent it depends on a better alternative being available - someone with a good background in a 3-4 for a start. Whoever is coach needs better talent at safety, nickle corner and some extra pass rush.
This. The season isn't over yet, and our defense has consistently been the worst part of our team in 2012. No reason we shouldn't seek to improve our team anyway.
HOWEVER, the season isn't over yet. He could string together five shutouts in a row on our way to a Lombardi. I have no idea. But, at this stage, I think it's far more likely that we give up 30 on Sunday and barely pull away in a shootout.
Well, we just gave up almost 400 yards to Nick Foles. Yes, Nick Foles. Maybe it's the personel but I'm very skeptical of Haslett.
I don't really know, the defense was inexcusably bad in the first half of the season which made me hate Haslett. To his credit it has picked up, but we still give up way too many plays and points in general.
If Dallas drops over 35 on us and we lose a chance at the playoffs, expect this debate to heat up.
Sure do. Imagine what our D would look like with some more talent?
I like the idea of stability and consistency. I am not sure if you can fire him after this year. The defense was supposed to carry this team. Then the cap penalty and injuries really limited the defense. I think he gets a pass this year. If the defense doesn't improve next year, I think he will be gone.
I said in the fire haslett thread that the only good that could possibly come from firing him midseason was that there would he no chance for him to do just enough the rest of the year to keep his job and unfortunately it looks like that's what's happened.
He has done a few good things with very little to work with and he probably deserves a shot with a few more pieces and a healthier defense but I just don't like his schemes.
He's got a pretty good linebacking corp, a good defensive line, and above average cornerbacks with an obvious weakness at safety. We should have been able to do better with this lot.

The way I see it, if it was strictly a question of talent or injuries, there's nothing he could have done in the second halves, right? But I watch the games and see us getting smoked early, toughening up later in games. That to me is coaching, yes he gets a cookie for halftime adjustments but where was all that brilliance in the first half? There just doesn't seem to be a lot of defensive gameplanning or anticipation, Has needs to get pummelled a bit to figure out where to block the punches?
So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish
I'm not too fussed - his play calling has been pretty good - its been execution letting us down. Too often there's been mistakes in the secondary. Perhaps he should have adjusted play calling to allow for our weak secondary, but the variety of blitzes has really impressed me. If he is fired, who do you bring in? Raheem Morris to help keep continuity, or appoint from elsewhere. I think Haslett is in the top third of options at DC, so unless something clearly better presents itself, i say we stick with Haslett and give him some picks to work with!
