If "great" means "large", then the 38 inches of snow on my 17th birthday in NOVA. The cabin fever got to be crazy, but we didn't lose power, and TV antenna didn't fall off the house.
Btw, all of us finished crocheting our afghans in the time off from school. My brother had to use the snowblade to make a path for the dogs to do their business, the snow was taller than the front porch.

Swimming in bioluminescent water is pretty freaking cool. I've done that a few times. Having a 10 foot bull shark try and knock me out of my kayak was not so cool.

    Hmmm.

Blizzard of '96 - still the gold standard for the East Coast for snowstorms in the last 50 years. Helped that I was young enough to make tunnels.
Hurricane Isabelle - This slightly over Floyd because I've never seen that many downed trees in my life.

There are a bunch of fantastic things you see just walking through the Appalachian mountains. Animals, sunsets etc.

2 weeks ago a pair of bald eagles flew into a treetop about 50 feet away and raucously carried on.. they may hav e been mating, but they both had the white head and tail, and i don't know enough about bald eagles to know if they were both the same sex or not.
So, they were either screwing or arguing loudly. After about 40 seconds of screeching, they both lit off.

A few years ago a few friends and i were playing tennis at sunset,, and the clouds were in such a way that just before the sun dipped under the horizon, there was like a tunnel of golden light against this deep purple sky.. looked cool, but then these geese flew toward us and overhead, and they were righti n this tunnel of light, so when they went by, their tailfeathers were lit up like fire, and because of this tunnel of light, as they continued away, the glow on their tails got brighter, and it literally looked like a group of six firelights flying away.

The greatest thing: The earth's ability to sustain itself despite some of the **** our species does to it, more specifically though our system of streams, rivers, inlets, bays, and oceans that continue to filter and refresh our planet's water. And plate techtonics, which more or less ensure that everything gets recycled.

The most impressive thing: Those two blizzards during snowmaggedon.

One of the best things about living in the Caribbean is that I know at some point today and every day, I'll see something amazing.

There are a couple for me that stand out: • Driving deep in Baja Mexico and coming around a bend on a dirt road & suddenly staring face to face with a Brahma bull that likely outweighed my vehicle. He didn't give a damn about me and I had to wait for him to waltz off the road. • Fishing at Lake Mary just south of Mammoth Mtn (California Sierras) and turning around on the shoreline to find I'm right next to a Black Bear. He proceeded to sniff and forage thru all my gear till he was satisfied there was nothing he wanted (yeah, I can't fish for anything). • Seeing the surf go from lake flat to 25 feet on the island of Kauai in the span of about 24 hours •Surfing giant waves @ Hanalei Bay (Kauai, HI) and losing my board a half mile from shore. Humbling in every sense & the only time surfing that I thought I very likely would die.

Softball sized hail decimate a new car lot in May 95. Punched holes through all of the windshields and through the composite fenders. I stood under a metal awning at the end of our service drive and watched cause get smashed. Like being hit hundreds of times with a baseball bat. Incredible.

A bald eagle stole the first salmon I ever caught in Alaska. I didn't notice him, my partner tells me "get the stringer out of your fish and walk away". He pointed to it as I watched it spring up from the island and come over, snatch my catch, and disappear into the twilight. Pretty cool.

Also, the northern lights. I was in Fairbanks from January to June in 06. We had purple lights, which I'm told is pretty rare. If you have extra money, it is worth every penny. Sometimes you feel like you can reach up and touch them. Plus all the stars....truly amazing.

10 day walking safari in the Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania. Breataking views and wildlife.

I'd say scuba diving off Mafia Island was also amazing. I encourage everyone to scuba dive once before they die. A whole new world. Plus extremely tranquil.
