Can a smart person explain why it is so hard to figure out what is wrong with the ACL?

Most of the time serious ACL tears are known about quite quickly after they've been inside the knee I thought.

Because of scar tissue from the previous ACL and the metal screws that were used to fix it, the MRI results are inconclusive. That's why they needed to either scope the knee or find out during actual surgery to see just how bad it is.

I gurantee no matter what happened on Sunday RG3 was having surgery on that knee when the season was over. They are saying Tear not Ruptured. Even a grade 1 sprain has tearing a rupture is a complete tear in the ligament.

LCL surgery is not performed unless the ligament is ruptured.

Lateral knee reconstruction is an open-knee procedure, and is not done arthroscopically. The tendon graft is passed through bone tunnels and fixed to the thighbone and lower leg bone (fibula) using screws or posts or with stitches tied around a post.

This is scary to me. Not done arthroscopically means a longer healing time. They will definately be able to check the entire knee as it looks like it is going to be filleted.

How do you know this is the only method for this type of surgery?

Are you serious? Don't need speculation, the pictures of his knee bending awkward don't look good. I'm hoping for the best, don't get me wrong. It just doesn't look good.

No surgery is normally performed for a partial tear.

So, looks like depending on the ACL, we could be looking at anything from 3-12 months, right?

Hard to make sense of people celebrating the news report on RG III.

He is having surgery on his LCL that much is confirmed. Andrews will assess further damage including any to ACL during the surgery and likely fix that at the same time if necessary.

At the very least RG III is likely looking at several months of rest and rehab after surgery. The only news that can come during and after surgery is even worse. If the ACL is damaged also then it's likely the entire 2014 season to be missed.

Why not look at it optimistically? If they think he'll be "the same" next year, I'll go with that until otherwise informed.. Plus, even if he is out till 2014, it'll just feel like we're getting the 1st round draft pick that year, with a proven stud QB.. **** it, Im calling win/win!!

This is the accurate answer. So we have to wait until the surgery to see if we can breathe easy or if our worst fears are realized.

Meaning another 2-3 days of rampant speculation, haters declaring the end of RG3's career, and general media hysteria vomit.
