Thread: How is RGIII?

Fact is that this system gives him that freedom to run at will on any play, which is going to get him hurt. Plain and simple throw the ball away live to play another day. Doesnt matter if its dropback pocket play that he scrambles on or a designed option. he's going to get hurt if they give him the freedom to run. Its not about what kind of play thats called. Its what the system allows him to do after the snap..

Facts are a ***** sometimes.

Any offensive system is going to allow for QB scambles on pass breakdowns though. You see Brady and Rodgers do that too. Maybe not Manning because he's a fossil, but most semi-mobile QBs are going to run during a game. If RG3 becomes paranoid after this injury and decides to run significantly less (only on serious play breakdowns, and for short distances with premature sliding), then we wasted the #2 pick on him, it's that simple.

I personally could care less if RG runs for alot of yards per game still.. Just the threat that he can is all it takes for the offense to be successful.. Im fine with 8-10 yard jaunts, then step out of bounds or slide.. 1st downs are all that matter.. Him dodging tacklers to run an 80 yard TD might be flashy, but we see where that got us.. Im sure this second severe knee injury will teach him to avoid "unneeded" contact at all cost.. Least I hope it does..

Agree about the scramble being part of any system. I'm just saying pull in the rains some. Dump the ball off or chuck it out of bounds sometimes. If you watch the play by play he's in run mode to much, which I think is going to get him hurt alot. Gruden knows alot about the QB position and has been saying that same thing most of the year. I'm not saying dont use all of Rg's skills (that would be a waste) but do tweek the system to protect him better. And please get him some slide training as part of his rehab.

I'm hoping for the best but have talked to enough people that I'm prepared for the worst..

You a contradicting yourself because what youre talking about isn't system, but Griffin instinct. Griffin choosing to run when the pocket collapses isn't "system". If you're saying do what we've been doing but try and teach and train him to slide, go out of bounds, throw the ball away, take a sack more....fine, understandable, can have a reasonable disagreement or conversation about that. But if you're going to complain about the dangerous "system" while primarily focusing on things that would occur regardless of us running a pure old style Shanny offense or the current stuff, then it seems reactionary and doesn't make sense

Obviously this injury to Robert sucks, but the silver lining I think most of us should be comfortable taking away from this injury is that RG3 will learn to protect himself when he is exposed as a runner. Obviously the further aggravation of the injury came on the bad snap, but he knows he was hurt intially because of the kind of hits he opens himself up to, and eventually, takes. He knows it will take a toll on his body. It's honestly best that he learned this lesson at 22 and fresh into the league. The kid is already insanely smart and mature already and we've seen not just how much of a team player he wants to be, but a leader as well. He'll heal up, come back more mature, and get back to dazzling like he was all season, but its going to take time. Fortunately we have someone who 1) Is motivated enough to overcome this injury, as well as any other obstacle that would be set for him. and 2) A stellar back up named Kirk Cousins.

That's a double-edge sword though. More protective being a good thing, but apprehension and hesitation to get extra yards in certain situations may also be detrimental and the antithesis of why we drafted him so high.
