He is not a great prospect. That doesn't mean he can't be good. But it means, he's not a great prospect. He's not a first rounder even without his baggage.

If you want to talk anecdotal evidence, I know more 5'9'' guys who never made it to the NFL, despite their want to be NFL players, than I know 6'6'' 320 pounders who aren't in the NFL. Size matters in the NFL.

John Clayton's article does not say that the Skins are 4 million over the cap. It says that they get to carry-over 4 million of salary cap space that they did not spent this year. I think the team will have about 18-20 million of cap room for 2013.

that the skins are $4.1m over after accounting for carryover cap?

Though I'm no cap expert I feel we may not have enough cap to sign more than 1 marquee FA this year. If that is the case, I would go for a great Safety, that would be Jarius Byrd or Dashon Goldson or Kenny Phillips. Together with Tanard Jackson, Gomes, Doughty we could shore up the secondary, which IMO is the weakest link we have.

I know RT is another concern but watching the running games during the winning streak, Tyler Polumbus was getting it done on the running game though his pass blocking needs improvement.

Quinn is young and durable, played great last week against Cincy.

    W. Moore has had hamstring issues this year and has missed games in his career.

Wow interesting. Byrd by a mile is ranked tops statistically. It would seem a no brainer to me though for the Bills to franchise him or he gets a big time contract so I doubt he's in play.
What if we have Tanard Jackson backing up Phillips instead and a mid-round safety like a Rambo backing those 2 up?

There is no way that he's nearly as fast as Darrell Green.

He's really not. He's been a pretty big disappointment this season for the Steelers. His production dropped way off, and he's had some major consistency issues. He also lost the #1 WR job in Pittsburgh.

If we were to spend big on a FA safety, it should be Byrd. He is amazing in that he is not very fast but he might have the best instincts of any safety in the NFL. Keep an eye on where his Dad, Gill Byrd, goes. Gill is a DB coach in the NFL, most recently with the Bears. Jairus might follow him.

By the way, does anyone know the cap hit of letting Merriweather go? If we are worried about injury prone guys, shouldn't he be tops on the list?

It looks to me like it does. It says we're getting an extra 4.2 million due to carry over, however even with that we're still at negative 4 million.

You have to factor in players whose contracts increase, such as Moss, Hall, etc. This number will likely change a lot over the next two months. Restructuring, pay cuts, etc.

I think its pretty much a no brainer for the Bills to find a way to keep Byrd.

By and large, philosophically I'm all for building through the draft.
I think signing 'name' free agents should be saved for the rare occasion. I think FA should be approached similar to the draft. With the aim to find young players with upside that have yet to reach their potential. Using PFF list as guide the S I like the most is Corey Lynch, I've been a fan of his for awhile. Aside from grading out higher then Glover Quin, he's carried over his college knack for the interception. Lynch has as many INT as Quin despite playing far fewer games.

But, I wouldn't be against any of the young S with upside.

Damn, I just got done at the gym... didn't expect the Merling signing! That was awesome! Hopefully there is more to come this early on!

I'll update the cap stuff after dinner as my wife is yelling at me right now, hahaha.

Looks like we're going to need to clear up quite a bit of space should be interesting seeing who stays and who goes.

Cali, what's interesting is a guy like D. Hall... a well-known "me first" guy... willing to re-work his deal to stay here.

Two years ago when Casey Rabach was released, he said "I wish I could stay because they are building something special here."

We aren't used to this as an organization. It's going to be exciting, frustrating, confusing, and pretty much just like any other Redskins offseason in recent history.... except I think the proof is in the pudding and starting this year, we finally cut guys who were added to other teams 53. I see that trend continuing this season as well.

But we need to work hard at keeping our young guys who've put out. And it's going to be a challenge that I don't envy Bruce and Mike for.

DC9, this site seems to have injury history for players. Don't know how accurate it is, but it might help.

I'm trying to put together a spreadsheet, might take some time, might not even finish, but we'll see.

Thanks, I will add this to the OP. I will tell you... I opened that and my eyes fixed right on Will Beatty. I was high on him coming out of college. And I would love to fleece the Giants.
