Josh Portis (born July 14, 1987) is an American football quarterback formerly on the practice squad of the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League. He was signed by the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2011. He was highly touted as one of the nation's top dual-threat quarterback prospects out of high school. Portis attended the University of Florida for one season and then transferred to the University of Maryland. In 2009, he transferred again to Division II California University of Pennsylvania, where he set school records with 3,421 passing yards, 36 touchdowns and 3,870 total offensive yards.

Portis was signed by the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent following the 2011 NFL Draft on July 26, 2011. He made the Seahawks roster on September 3 behind starter Tarvaris Jackson. On August 11, 2011, against the Chargers, he went 5 for 6 for 69 yards and 1 TD in a preseason win. Portis was cut by the Seahawks on August 31, 2012 and signed to their practice squad on September 1, 2012 [18] .

Seahawks coaches were generally high on Portis since he joined the team as an undrafted free agent in 2011. Pete Carroll even claimed that he would have been a 4th round pick had he been in the 2012 draft class.

Because of the 3-way QB competition that did not include Portis during training camp, he received almost no reps in practice, and did not play in the preseason until week 3. He then proceeded to play poorly in his limited time on the field, presumably because of his lack of practice time.

WR Phil Bates was brought back to the practice squad in his place.

Portis will likely be back. The Seahawks churn the practice squad quite liberally, choosing to use it to help the scout team show specific matchup issues. Portis’s main contribution at the Seahawks over the last 2 seasons have been to help the defense prepare for playing against highly mobile QBs. With the Seahawks taking on Jay cutler and Bears this week, this wasn’t
Didn't Clinton get mad on some radio show because they kept saying Josh Portis was his cousin and he's really not?

Really good read on Delmas and his passion for the game...
Delmas looks very intriguing, but has he had BOTH knees operated on in 2 years? What's the prognosis on this kid and his durability?

He's young, and at this current moment, he's healthy... With Delmas, you're always taking a chance. You'll get a player with star power but who also likes to throw his body around a bit too much. He's a ball hawk and heavy hitter and can play the FS position to a "T."

Ask any Lions fan and they'll say the defense and team performs better with Delmas on the field. He's a high reward type of player IF, he can stay healthy.

At 25, I can only imagine he'll try and take better care of his body and hopefully we can let him roam the secondary while we have an in the box SS in Meriweather or whoever we get to play SS. Typically though, we do have an in the box SS in this defensive scheme.

Also, Sam Shields is listed on the first page in the OP but you might as well scratch that one off. He'll be resigned, especially since he's a RFA..

I'd love to have Danario Alexander, WR for the Chargers as I've mentioned before, but he too is a RFA and it's not going to happen, no chance.

So is Chris Rainey going to jail or anything due to his off field incident that got him released from Pittsburgh (does not appear to be a major incident)? I think he would be a nice addition provided his head is screwed on straight (a big IF). He would add an electrifying element to our return game and contribute on offense as the speed guy on some of our read option plays (ala LeMichael James in SF).

I thought the same thing, but now I don't think he's necessary. Crawford is a good return man, and Paul was doing well on kickoffs. As for our running backs and adding a speed guy, we have Helu coming back, and Helu is pretty fast himself.

i'd take a flier on him and see if he's even mentally stable... Doesn't hurt to give it a whirl and see if he can contribute. This would have to be after Shanny and Co. sit down with him and have a good, long talk about his future. I've also mentioned Reggie Bush as a possible FA candidate if he'd come at a decent price. I'd like to see if Helu can still do the things he's known for with his cuts and strides but with turf toe and achilles in both legs being damaged, he may be a long shot.

I just dont trust Helu in terms of staying healthy he is still not running full speed in his rehab. Also I think Rainey provides a little more wiggle in terms of agility and lateral quickness than Helu. Helu is more of a straight line kind of guy in terms of his speed. Having said that I agree that Rainey is not necessary I just think he would add an element to this offense that a few RBs can. In addition, while Paul, has done a good job Rainey is a step up in every way on kick off returns.

Helu can barely jog let alone sprint without pain in that toe, id rather rely on a udfa or late round rb then if helu will be healthy...

I don't trust Niles Paul with his hands, however I did like Crawford being back there. Paul is a good gunner but I don't trust him on returns... Reggie Bush would be my top choice, then Chris Rainey if we decided go that way.

I think Rainey can be gotten much cheaper than Bush. Reggie Bush had a very good season and he is going to command a salary that is very high compared to Rainey. Dont get me wrong I'd love to get Bush I just dont think its realistic in terms of salary cap impact in 2013.

I'd make a run at Aquib Talib in free agency, cap permitting.

It depends on the role he's willing to take. No one is going to give him every-down-back money. He's going to have to settle for a hybrid/3rd down role as a scat back, which IMO is his best suit. He's a dynamic return man as well... Dolphins said they will offer him a "team friendly" contract to stay but he may want to leave for a contender.

Is it likely, probably not lol

I don't think Reggie Bush is looking to go anywhere where he's barely gonna touch the ball. He probably goes back to Miami.

I was all about Talib when he was with the Buccs and I knew we could get him out of there for next to nothing. Now, every time I watch him he makes one good play, followed up by an injury which sidelines him... You can't bring him here and expect him to start every down and that's not a good characteristic for a #1 corner. Let him stay in NE and give me Keenan Lewis/Chris Houston/Tracy Porter.

Sadly, that's what his role in Miami is as well. He shouldn't be an every down back... He will settle for 3rd down role. It'll be interesting to see what Miami's "team friendly" contract amounts to and if he accepts it.

Miami also has Lamar Miller who is arguably the better of the two backs. Miami won't break the bank to resign him

Sadly, that's what his role in Miami is as well. He's never been an every down back and he never will be... He will settle for 3rd down role. It'll be interesting to see what Miami's "team friendly" contract amounts to and if he accepts it.
I don't know about that, he was the #1 RB in Miami. He carried it 200+ times and run for 1000 yards 2 years in a row. The next closest guy didn't even have 100 carries this year. He's arguably been the best player on their offense. He's changed the perception of him coming out of New Orleans, at least some. Now, I agree he's not a 300+ carry kinda back, but he's better than being strictly a 3rd down back, IMO in the right system.
