If you address it through an early draft pick you can have them compete for the nickel position and in years 2-3 be ready to replace Hall once his contract expires. That is the cheaper way to do things, so I think it makes more sense to bring someone in to compete with Minnefield and Crawford and eventually have one of them move in to replace Hall.

I would love to address FS via free agency, but just not sure we can do it that cheaply or without losing one of our own FAs ... if we could find someone like Jairus Byrd in free agency to play FS I would, ideally, like to keep Meriweather around, but we could address SS in the 3rd/4th round, too.
Ultimately, my plan would be (as of now) to find a FS such as Mundy or Lynch in FA. Not high cost, but solid enough to help us in that department and would immediately step in as the starter. I'd keep Merriweather. I'd weight SS high in my position of need/BPA strategy and hopefully come out with a guy like Rambo.

That gives you competition in the safety department with: Reed Doughty, Bacarri Rambo, Lynch/Mundy, Brandon Meriweather, Jordan Pugh, DeJon Gomes, Jordan Bernstine. Pick 4/5 of those guys and we have a solid safety corps.

Any room to clear space with this move or will this be adding to his cap number?
LL56 said this was going to be the top priority this offseason back in December. Let's get this squared away and start restructuring some contracts. Enough good touch - bad touch on the beach Front Office types. Time to do WORK!

Also, he turned half the lights off in New Orleans during the Super Bowl. He could save us on energy costs.
I will put him up on the OP. I think everyone has a close eye on Baltimore because of how against the cap they are and how many FA they have... including a starting QB who needs to be re-upped.

I agree with your strategy, KD. But I would also want Tanard Jackson involved in our 2013 plans if he gets re-instated.

    Late Breakfast/Brunch rotoworld.com nuggets/home fries:

The Baltimore Sun says it's a "strong possibility" that the Ravens will try to reach a contract extension with Anquan Boldin.
Boldin came up huge during the Ravens' Super Bowl run, consistently making crucial, difficult catches en route to 22 catches for 380 yards and four touchdowns in four wins. Now the ideal compliment to burner Torrey Smith is owed $6 million in 2013 and carries a $7.531 cap figure. The Ravens will be careful not overpay a 32-year-old wideout with rapidly declining separation skills, but losing Boldin could prove traumatic. He's much more important to Joe Flacco than he is to fantasy owners.

The Chiefs are expected to release LE Tyson Jackson this offseason.
The third overall pick in the 2009 draft, Jackson has provided next to no pass-rush impact through four seasons while starting on consistently bad Kansas City run defenses. He's sitting on five career sacks. Jackson's ultimate undoing will be a $14.72 million base salary and $250K offseason roster bonus.

The Denver Post considers the Broncos "far more likely" to slap LT Ryan Clady with the franchise tag rather than sign him to a long-term deal before free agency.
Clady turned down a deal worth $10 million annually last offseason. Tagging Clady would cost Denver "only" $9.66 million. Beat writer Jeff Legwold points to Clady's recent shoulder surgery, giving him two major operations in his career. Clady also underwent knee surgery after rupturing his patella tendon in 2010. Still just 26, Clady has made three Pro Bowls through five NFL seasons.

The Denver Post expects the Broncos to either release LB D.J. Williams or request a "significant pay cut."
Williams was suspended for nine games in 2012, and made just one start in seven contests upon returning. He played only 131 regular season snaps. He's currently due an untenable $6 million in 2013.

CSN Bay Area doesn't expect the 49ers to re-sign free agent ILB Larry Grant.
Grant turned in an impressive three-game cameo in place of an injured Patrick Willis in 2011, but surprisingly played just 21 snaps on defense in 2012. An unrestricted free agent, Grant could have trouble finding a starting job.

I want no part of Jackson, and here's why:

    Culture.

You got a third suspension for marijuana/drugs/whatever you want to call it. We have two (potentially one) guy on the roster who had that issue and probably several more who have gotten away with it (pure conjecture). Set the tone. This guy betrayed the trust we had in him and screwed us over by continuing a behavior that has cost his teammates elsewhere. He left his teammates and coaches high and dry. Maybe he's not a bad human being, but the consequence to his action left the Washington Redskins in a bad place.

Send the message that people who make mistakes like that are not welcome here.

True enough. Perhaps better production from the TE and a third down back would mitigate the possible drop-off.
Am a big fan on continuity, especially for a young QB and it appears Griffin and Moss have that already. Moss seemed to be his 3rd down/TD goto WR. So while that production could come from other places I would much rather have Griff+Moss element of the passing game return and build from there.

But, another argument for getting rid of Moss deals with the question of whether/how much Moss presence stunts the growth of the other receivers?

Guys can change. My own personal experiences tell me this. I understand where you are coming from, but I always do well with the "Black Sheep" crowd in my profession and have changed a lot of guys around. Sometimes it's as easy as having a positive role model. This is a young kid who has a problem. We have Phillip Daniels working with him to my understanding. If Phillip Daniels is willing to say he's ready to contribute as a player and a member of society, I'm willing to give him a chance. If PD says "no" then I let him walk.

Either way, this would be his last chance with me and probably will be with the league if re-instated anyways.

Golston has been Steady Eddy for us, but Jones is better.
Skins have a lot of money invested in Carriker, Bowen and Cofield. When healthy I thought that Carriker was pretty much an every down player. I'm not sure how the Skins are going to rotate in Jenkins even without the addition of Jones and possible rotation of Cofield.

Wasn't Golston in most often in the nickel packages? He's a relatively cheap rotational player. If Cofield came out in nickel packages would he have to change his physique to be successful at DE?. Under what situations would he play DE? When would it be advantageous given that one of the other DEs would be out and the NT slot would be filled by Neild/Rook/Baker?

Here is what I think of Golston:

A lot of us have been kicking around the idea for the past two offseasons of kicking Cofield out to DE and either keeping Neild and Baker or keeping Baker and drafting another NT.

Mine as well. I deal with kids as I coach them. And they absolutely can change. Some will, some won't. It depends on a number of factors. I agree with you.

This is a young kid who has a problem. We have Phillip Daniels working with him to my understanding. If Phillip Daniels is willing to say he's ready to contribute as a player and a member of society, I'm willing to give him a chance. If PD says "no" then I let him walk.
And while I agree that people can change, I will add this: He's been suspended three times. He got released for doing it with Tampa because he didn't exhibit the ability/will to change. And while he can still change, he let this team down. I have no doubt he can learn, but I think its best he learn elsewhere.

Either way, this would be his last chance with me and probably will be with the league if re-instated anyways.
The three prior chances that he failed to take give you reason to believe the fourth is the charm? I'll give you this: I admire your will to see the best and attempt to make everyone better. I have that same passion with youth... But not with professional who have been paid millions.

Again, remember, I said it would depend on Jones' contract cost.

Jones is a VERY good pass rusher from DE who can play the run. He'd be very beneficial in nickel situations/spell situations. He'd also be a guy who can step in and be a consistent, solid starter should injuries to Carriker/Bowen occur. Golston isn't nearly as versatile in regards to playing starter minutes.

I'm not going to disagree with you, I'm just saying that as far as we know, all of those infractions happened while he was in Tampa. He is in a new area and obviously admires Raheem. Maybe it was the only offer he got, maybe not. But if you are willing to move, that's a big step. He could've just stayed in Tampa and got high, but he wanted to take another shot and he looked fantastic. Mike may send a message with the dude, who knows.

I do think he can send an equally strong one by keeping him on. He stood behind Trent and Fred at the same time make them feel like they let the team down. Because they did. But I think you'd have to give him a chance in your program if you feel he has changed and he can help you.

Fair enough. I have a lot of respect for you as a poster and your stance. And while I don't agree, it's a respectable stance to have. And ultimately, I'd love to see a young guy come out of this as a better human being. I still don't agree, but hey, that's what this forum is for.

the guy is worthless, ultimately I think he gets cut/released.
2009 - got popped for the first time 4 game suspension
2010 - suspended indef, 2nd time popped (reinstated oct 2011)
    2012 - failed physical, cut
2012 - suspended indef AGAIN, eligible to be reinstated aug 2013

that's 3+ years of the same boneheaded behavior... well 3+ years of getting caught, he's probably been doing that stuff longer.
and on top of that, he's only ELIGIBLE to be reinstated.. no guarantees he will be.. and then on top of THAT, he will have had absolutely zero to do with team functions, practice, study, etc.

the guy is a lost cause, and I wish people would quit including him in their plans going forward, because he's not likely to contribute much, if anything to the 2013 season, other than waste a roster spot and cap $$$
Barry Cofield is LEGIT... no more nonsense about we need a "real" NT... HE IS THE REAL DEAL!!!! He goes to the Pro Bowl this year, book it!!!

A coaches' opinion means very little to me in formulating my own opinion.

Keep in mind, that doesn't mean that I believe I'm right, but I will never base my opinion on something entirely on a coaches' stance. They certainly know more than we do. But that doesn't mean they are always correct

TJax also brings the added bonus of being one of the worst tackling Safties during the time he wasn't suspended.
