Lions cut 3 players so far, saved $10 million on the cap

Giants cut 3 players yesterday, saved almost $14 million on the cap

Leave that to Bruce, we will be fine. It will be an offseason just like last, and we still ended up with some decent talent in Garcon, Morgan, etc.

Because while we'd save money against THIS years cap, we can't really do anything with it. FA period is in March, the money doesn't come off the books until June.

We need to clear money before our FA's hit the market so we can lock them up. Ideally we'd want to wait until June, but we're pushed pretty tight with the cap penalty.

Yeah but we don't need to be under the cap until the end of the pre-season correct?

    • He hasn't had a full season since his rookie year.
    • His play has declined a bit
    • And there's more to being a safety than just hitting hard, he's so-so in coverage, which is our weakest area.

A name I haven't seen mentioned on here yet...

    Louis Vasquez, G, 6'5 335

Pro scouts around the NFL reportedly "love" free agent RG Louis Vasquez.ESPN AFC West blogger Bill Williamson considered 25-year-old Vasquez the Chargers' "best offensive lineman" in 2012, and Pro Football Focus graded him as a top-13 overall guard. Vasquez, at 6'5/335, is a particularly effective pass blocker. He could be viewed as a better fit for left guard on the open market. Feb 7 - 12:21 PM

Also, Giants just re-signed TE Bear Pascoe... seems they might be worried Martellus Bennet is going to leave in FA

Unfortunately. When you're ridiculously tight with money, any cap damage regardless of how minimum it is, is too much.

He'd cost 940,000. We have zero dollars currently. That's a lot of money to spend on a 3rd/4th string TE.

Uhh...actually I don't know. I think there are exemptions for training camp. But I was under the impression the league wouldn't sign off unless it fit under the cap. You might be right, that's something we should look into.

Jovan Olafioye is visiting with the Steelers now. He recently refused an offer from the Ravens and it's unlikely the Steelers can afford him... Can we please just do our due diligence and bring this dude in for a look? Come on FO!

“It’s my blood pressure, but I’ve got it under control,” Olafioye said. “I’ve been to so many doctors and I’ve been cleared by them all.”

“They’re sure I’ll be playing for somebody in the NFL this year. That was encouraging. They said my situation is controllable but they didn’t want to take that risk. With their rules they can’t mess with my situation.”

It is understandable that the Packers did not want to screw around with someone that has a unique medical record, but can the team really afford not to sign a top-notch offensive lineman? Green Bay’s front five were among the worst in football this past season. If the Packers have any fixes that must be made in the off-season, it is figuring out how to better protect quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

However, what is one’s team loss seems to be another’s gain considering as much as six NFL teams are interested in acquiring Olafioye. Pittsburgh is one of the organizations that has expressed interest, and seem to be prepared to at least give him a physical. It would be wise for the Steelers to sign the incredibly athletic but inconsistent lineman to a minimum contract.

Yes, but the issue here is with the rule of 51. Brown would be counted in that 51 most expensive contracts during the offseason. I may be wrong, but my understanding was that while we can be over the cap in the offseason, we cannot be over the cap with respect to our 51 highest contracts. In that way, Jammal Brown would hinder us from the opening of free agency until we cut him in June. It's probably coming down to what other moves we are making and if we need that cap space now or can wait until June.

I know, right! He is incredibly athletic and all signs point to him being in the NFL this year and surprising everyone... As the article I just posted states, "One teams loss is another teams treasure."

I expect him to be signed to a team within the next day or so.

Just posted an hour ago from a Steelers beat writer.

Mike Jones (WaPo) interview recap on 7 Feb 13 on "The Sports Fix" "Redskins at 1 segment" on espn 980.

    - D. Hall - WILL restrucutre
    - L. Fletcher - is on a year to year basis but it's up in the air and honestly no one has a clue. If he comes back they will ask to restructure his $6.2 mil
    - B. Merriweather - Will likely be back. We will absolutely be making another move at Strong Safety somewhere this offseason. Draft/FA
    - S. Moss - Will likely be back. He wants to be here, Redskins want him back. Another restructure candidtate.
    - F. Davis - We want him back. Fred and his agent know that he is not going to get a big pay day coming off of an achilles. Fred will probably come cheap because he is coming off an injury. Franchise is a possibility but is not likely because the number jumps.
    - T. Polumbus and K. Lich - Lich will probably come back. Shanny likes him and LeRiebus is viewed as more of a Center than a Guard. Polumbus has ups and downs and would come cheap but he implies that the Redskins will look to upgrade.
    - R. Jackson - Debate whether or not he is RFA or UFA.
    - Zo Alexander - Would be surprised if Pittsburgh didn't go after him because of Danny Smith. Zo loves it here. Can fill in at a lot of positions.
    - D. Young - Kyle Shanahan says D. Y. is the best fullback in the NFL. See him as valuable.
    - L. Paulsen - We have to bring him back. Kyle didn't use Cooley a whole lot and Niles Paul is still here.

    Top 3 needs (M. Jones):
    1. Strong and Free Safety - "would be surprised if we didn't draft one of each." "Tanard Jackson is possible." "Phillip Thomas, Bacarri Rambo, TJ McDonald"
    2. Cornerback
    3. Right Tackle

Kevin Sheehan wants one more speed player. Running back or Wide Receiver.

Roy Helu was still not healthy at the end of this past season per Mike Jones. His feet were still bothering him.

Louis Delmas - DB - Lions Lions GM Martin Mayhew says he has "no plans" to use the franchise tag this offseason.
The Lions aren't hurting for candidates for the franchise tag, but FS Louis Delmas is coming off his second straight injury-plagued season, while DE Cliff Avril struggled playing under the tag in 2012. LBs Justin Durant and DeAndre Levy don't have the résumés of players typically associated with the franchise tag. Mayhew has pledged to shake up the roster, and a big part of that will likely be letting some established starters walk in free agency. Re-signing Delmas figures to be a priority, however.

Kevin? (Mike Jones meant Kyle?) And I agree, we need some more speed. Backside defenders can't key in on RG3 as much if they're heavily worried about speed breaking one from a catch in the flats.

Roy Helu. Ugh. That's really not what I wanted to hear.
