#Redskins cut that wouldn't surprise me.. DE: Adam Carriker

that would be interesting... but I think we all read into that with the extension he wanted last year and after the injury, bringing in Merling.

Jets cut Bart Scott too. He'd expressed a desire to play the Mike, where David Harris is. This gives him a chance to pursue that elsewhere.

    ---------- Post added February-19th-2013 at 02:42 PM ----------

    Jets released S Eric Smith.
Smith was signed for an affordable $2.4 million, but may have been cut loose even if the Jets didn't have one of the worst salary-cap situations in football. A month shy of his 30th birthday, Smith was a part-time player in 2012, and didn't play at a high level on 329 snaps. He'll get a chance to latch on somewhere in camp, but it's not guaranteed he'll be a part of someone's Week 1 roster.

    Jets released OT Jason Smith.
The second overall pick in 2009 by St. Louis, Smith is one of the biggest busts in modern draft history. It's not surprising that the Jets are cutting ties with Smith because he was owed a $12 million roster bonus, and all of that comes off New York's cap. Operating as a special teams blocker and tight end in jumbo packages last season, Smith played under 300 offensive snaps.

    Jets waived TE Josh Baker.
Baker, 26, was owed just $555,000 for 2013, but tore his right ACL during the 2012 preseason and fell out of the Jets' plans. He'll likely clear waivers.

    Jets released OLB Calvin Pace.
The Jets also released veteran S Eric Smith and OT Jason Smith, while TE Josh Baker was waived. The expected series of moves clears roughly $24 million in space for a team that was estimated to be $23 million over the cap. The only surprise is that Bart Scott isn't joining his former teammates on the street. Perhaps he's amenable to returning at a bargain-basement price, but he'll likely be cut loose soon enough. The Jets still aren't in a good cap situation, but now have room to breathe. Even if Scott ends up sticking around, Pace and company won't be the last veteran Jets to be handed their walking papers. Going on 33, Pace started 32 of a possible 32 games the past two seasons, but is far from the disruptive force he was upon first arriving in New York in 2008. He'll likely be limited to incentive-laden, one-year offers on the open market.

    ---------- Post added February-19th-2013 at 02:43 PM ----------

A league source tells the Washington Examiner that Pierre Garcon will not need foot surgery this offseason.
Garcon had pain in his right foot last preseason and then tore ligaments during Week 1. He ended up playing in just 10 games and was severely limited in four. However, undergoing surgery to repair his plantar plate wouldn't have guaranteed a full recovery, and specialists now believe that barring a setback, rest will do the trick. The Examiner's source says Garcon -- who hasn't been running since the Redskins' season ended on Jan. 6 -- should be 100 percent by the start of 2013. We'll still have a yellow flag next to his name as foot injuries at the wideout position can linger.

    ---------- Post added February-19th-2013 at 02:44 PM ----------

    Jets released ILB Bart Scott.

The sides were set to meet Thursday at the Combine, but must have decided there was too much ground to make up in talks. The move gives the Jets an additional $8 million in cap space on top of the roughly $24 million they saved earlier Tuesday by cutting Calvin Pace, Jason Smith, Eric Smith and Josh Baker. Scott was still a useful player in 2012, but came off the field in passing situations, and tallied just 60 tackles. That was his lowest total since 2004. He'll have to be amenable to incentive-laden deals in free agency. The New York Daily News expects 2012 third-rounder Demario Davis to take Scott's place in New York.

I believe he has no real cap hit for us. Saves about 4 million, so it makes sense. I don't like it, I think we need him...but it's not unreasonable.

Carriker being cut seems like one of the more probable moves to me.

His release generates no dead cap plus it could pretty much get us down to the required cap number for the start of FA.

Plus I could see a scenario where he was then re-signed to the roster on a lower contract after the start of FA.

I would like to take a look at Jason Smith (assuming he is nice and cheap) I feel like his issues lie in confidence and getting him in here with the ZBS using his athleticism might help re-engage him. Again just a vet min type flyer, no big comittment, and just a feeling the guy's combine 40 time (5.09) and pass blocking skill might fit better here giving him the confidence boost he needs.
We work together and your name is Richard and I call you Dick and you hate it. You ask me to stop. I refuse, so you go to HR and they say "well he has been calling you Dick for several months so we think you set the precedence, sorry". Frustrated you ask me again." Hey man stop calling me Dick" I say "Sorry Dick, it's tradition, HR said so" Well in that scenario there is only one dick and it aint Richard. Why be that guy?

40 time really doesn't matter for the o-line. That's a horrible metric. Check out 10 yard split, vertical, long jump, etc as slightly more meaningful o-line stuff.

He's had "issues" if that's what you want to call it, since at this point its just who he is, from before he got drafted. He was drafted on potential despite some red flags.

yeah I was thinking the same.. Jason Smith was never a mauler and i think the teams that had him previously were trying to use him as such.. ZBS might be what he needs...

I don't think anyone is looking for Merling to lock down a starting job, merely be an inexpensive upgrade to Golston/Worthington.

Great news about Lynch/Toler. I was going to bring up Toler a few days ago but he's at the higher end of the age bracket we usually go for. Would be interesting to see if he could take C. Griffin's spot coming in on nickel packages and letting Hall slide inside to the slot.

It's not just his 40 time, Smith was an "athletic" OT coming out of college as a converted TE. I think he's an interesting project for someone, maybe even as a LG. I'm just not so sure it will be here.

Yes, if anyone on the Dline is going to be a cap casualty it's going to be Carriker. And that'd be the right move.

He's washed up now, and was never particularly skilled before. He's a replacement-level body now, if he wasn't before. I think we can do better for around the same price, if we don't bring back Freddy.

I'm not against taking a flyer on Jason Smith either if cheap. Bringing him in to protect the most decorate Alum from his Alumni may be good for him. If not, it's been real.

If Carriker is released and not brought back cheaper, does that:
    A) raise the likelihood of pursuing someone in FA
    B) raise the likelihood we draft someone
    C) do nothing, because we expect Neild/Baker to take over NT duties while Cofield slides outside, basically leaving our starting depth at DE untouched (with Merling there for good measure).

Obviously Carriker being released is just rumors, but if it were to happen, my guess would be option C, I thought the staff was high on Neild before his injury, which might indicate he gets the starts while Cofield kicks outside.
