They definitely meant 8th in tackles for Fletcher. But the point still stands, Fletcher clearly had gas left in the tank over that 7 game stretch at the end of the year. It will be interesting to see if he retires, football players tend to get restless in the spring after all their bumps and bruises heal, it's why Farve kept coming back.

Of course, there's a ton of pressure in a bunch of different directions. My hope is that Fletcher comes back but on a reduced salary. Maybe extend him another year, not changing guaranteed money, bringing his total cap hit down, with the intention that he would be owed no more guaranteed money at the end of the year, and would basically be asked to retire after the season, or would be cut, put through waivers, and probably brought back at vet min.

So, if LL is right that we target safety over corner in FA, is Mundy the more logical choice over Phillips? Seems his experience in the Pittsburgh style of defense would translate better (or more quickly anyway) to our squad.

What about asking price/talent-level for both? Are they comparable?

Not only that, but you have to think longevity is a key word within the organization. Jackson's suspension and Merriweather's injury likely cost this team a trip to one additional playoff game and possibly a few wins during the regular season. If we are going with a "bang for your buck" theory that we seem to be, then I would side with you. Also, Graziano brought Mundy up. Maybe Shanny owes him a nugget for helping out with that post-Panthers game press conference debacle.

I'd also love to see Tanard Jackson given another chance. Phillip Daniels has done fantastic work with Trent and Freddy D, no reason to think that the NFL will turn a blind eye when we request that he be reinstated by the League.

That and it's likely we find a future starter in the 3rd or 4th round in the draft (at safety) if we are able to land Poyer or Rhodes in the 2nd round. That may just be the smartest way to go about it.

So to take off Brad Jones from the top 3, what would you guys like to add as the third "overall" top 3?

    I'm thinking WR?

In terms of these 2 safeties, I would go with Mundy due to durability, and cheaper.
I think Phillip will garner more money, and not sure about his current health, I would hate to put our money on this guy and he's not playing all year like Meriweather.

Don't forget about the time Ryan Mundy almost killed DHB. I like the attitude and the hitting. We're going to need that as Dez Bryant gets better.

Phillips is better talent wise. Phillips is a pro-bowl safety, Mundy is probably decent starter/great depth.

Problem is Phillips also has the most brittle knees I've ever seen. The guy has missed 24 games in 5 seasons, all with knee related injuries. I'm very hesitant to bring someone on board like that.

But ultimately, it's one of those things handled on a case by case basis. If Meriweather looks healthy, and Jackson looks like he'll be reinstated and in football shape, and it looks like we could get a starter/contributor in round 3 or 4 of the draft for safety, I'd be fine bringing Phillips in provided the price is right. Mainly, I just want us as deep as possible at safety, I want Doughty 5th on the depth chart going into the year, so that if Meriweather or Phillips go down, we still have solid guys around.

Don't forget Bernstein and DJ. I know we go through the Doughty drama every offseason and he's always here. But if we bring in two or three guys, I'd again, be surprised if he makes the team. But I've been surprised for two straight years, lol.

Here's one for ya. Walterfootball's Mock has us taking Terrance Williams w/our 2nd rd. pick. IF he falls that far does RG3 want Shanahan to select him? First, I don't think he last that long and we have other needs ahead of Williams but IF Shanahan does go with BAP then it will be interesting.

Williams is definitely someone who I would be happy with in round 2. He's got the potential to be a #1 in this league, and Garcon, Williams, Morgan, and Hankerson is a pretty dangerous group on the outside. If Moss can hold down the slot, or Robinson develops there, that could lead to us having a really dangerous and deep WR group.

Walterfootball also has Poyer, Rambo, Jefferson, and McDonald going in the 3rd. If that is the case, I would hope we use a pick and trade up for one of them. Don't we have an extra 5th or something?

Yes, we do have an extra 5th. We MIGHT have a conditional pick (7th) from the Lions from the Barnes trade. No one know yet if we will get that pick though. He had to make the final roster which he did but was cut soon after that like 3 games into the season.

Neat little salary calculator for NFL teams...breaks it down by Offense, Defense, positional group, , etc. Thought I'd share.

Obviously Mundy is the better fit health-wise, just wasn't too sure the difference in talent and cost. Yeah, Graziano is the one that got me thinking about Mundy. I keep hearing we are running a Pittsburgh style defense, so made me think Mundy might be the better (and more reliable) fit.

I could see Jackson still being in the team's plans, but they need a starter and capable backup as of training camp in case Jackson doesn't work out. At this point I trust Doughty more than Gomes. If Bernstine's not healthy by TC I think we bring back Doughty.

Right on, this was my impression as well.

I've been against the idea of a WR with our second, but from what I know and what everyone has said about Williams, that could be a great situation for us.

Wide Reciever is a need for us. We know the big needs on this team in no particular order:

    Safety
    Cornerback
Right Tackle (if you aren't sold on Tommy Gun Compton)
    Offensive weapons/depth

We'll know more about our draft strategy after FA.

Apparently the "play a game in the UK every year to increase interest" strategy is working.
