lol, good one. I guess I don't ask questions for the same reason. Sometimes I ask questions to gather my own thoughts. I must not be human.

And I was talking football, but then you created my positions for me instead of actually reading them. Like, you know, how I only want to draft BPA without any conditions and I would like to take a WR in the 2nd round.

Ok, enough... the funniest thing about all this is we pretty much agree on everything football-wise here.

Is there a limit to the amount of guys we can PUP? I can't remember if it's one or like eight.

To add to this, it looks like the Dolphins are looking to pick up Finley is he is released, meaning Fasano would then be on the chopping block.
Great job! That's the first thing I thought about when I read your post on Finley. Sweet! I'm taking the whole week that FA starts off of work because I will totally not be able to concentrate on anything but happenings around the league.

re: all the talk of wide receivers -- we did have the highest passing YPA in all of football. And the 49ers had the 2nd highest, without a particularly stellar cast either.

You know what my favorite part about that is? I like how our coaches specifically set out this offseason to improve upon our YAC and they did. They openly stated they were intent on finding ways to fix how poor our YAC had been and it shows how well this Front Office is working together.

If by 'true need' you mean the one starting position that we don't have any real options, then I agree. The only positions I'd say don't need to be addressed within the next year are QB and PK (possibly TE and OLB if Davis, Paulsen and Jackson sign longterm deals - as you referenced with 'our own free agents').

Reports out there are suggesting that the Patriots might not resign Pat Chung, he is one of the better Safeties in this FA class.

PUP players count against 80 total limit like Brown last year.

Thank you rk. So to clarify, you get 53 active, and then you have 27 spots for IR, PUP, Practice Sqaud, etc?

I believe its 90 when training camp begins, down to 53 by regular season with 45 active players on game day and 8 allowed for the practice squad.

However; when you look out the production of the offense as unit (4th in scoring/5th in yards) despite below average RT play from Polumbus, I could see how RT might not be a high priority for the FO to commit our limited resources to address. Also, another factor to consider is the ease of upgrading from Polumbus. Tyler, bless his heart, was terrible. It wouldn't be out of the realm to upgrade from him easily through FA or middle round draft pick. Heck, I thought Compton was better then Polumbus during preseason.
I am generally not a big Mel Kiper guy, if I recall you are the same about Kiper but I try to read whatever I can from everybody before the draft. Kiper was very high on Compton and actually Gettis too predraft -- labeled both as fast moving zone blocking guys. Yeah be great to see Compton supplant Polumbus. Interesting, though Polumbus being a free agent -- they can likely get him resigned cheap who else is going to sign him? Or maybe get some else relatively cheap ala a Ryan Harris.

As for the draft, should be interesting to see the interplay of it and free agency especially when it comes to corner, safety, and RT and maybe even TE and D line.

    1. On twitter LL56 thought the Redskins will be more likely to go safety versus a high end corner in free agency because you have to pay a larger premium for corner free agents.

    2. But you can argue its risky to go in the draft with corner being your top need and hoping that a bonafide starter type will be available in the late 2nd round. yeah maybe Rhodes, Poyer, Trufant are there but corners tend to get over drafted and often go earlier than expected.

    3. Safety seems super deep and the odds are good that a good player will be there in the 2nd and heck probably the third round too. Being reading your draft assessment of the safeties, good stuff.

    4. As for RT -- I'd assume they'd want to go secondary in the 2nd and 3rd round considering the combination of need and draft talent so maybe they look in the 4th or 5th or just ride with Compton

    5. Wonder if they consider TE especially in the 4th or 5th -- its a deep draft for TE. Also I don't rule out DE or NT -- some of the top 3-4 defenses have one player who is beyond a space eater but also can bring some heat on the passer.

Bears | Had contract talks with Henry Melton during season
The Chicago Bears had contract talks with impending free-agent DT Henry Melton's representatives during the regular season but the two sides were not able to reach an agreement. The team could place the franchise tag on Melton if an agreement can't be reached before the start of free agency.

Rams | Could have two new safeties
The St. Louis Rams could cut SS Quintin Mikell, who is owed a $6 million base salary next season, and FS Craig Dahl is a free agent. Safety is considered a deep position in the draft, and the Rams could have two new ones next season.

    ---------- Post added January-25th-2013 at 10:12 AM ----------

damn, the Saints are now switching to a 3-4 as well as a few other teams... This is not good news for getting players in the draft who fit the 3-4... Now there will be even more teams looking to get those 3-4 hybrid players.

Also, they are releasing Vilma and Will Smith... Big man and said draft bust Sedrick Ellis will hit the FA market.

I think you can start scratching those names off your draft board. Rhodes is going mid-1st round. Trufant and Poyer are probably going late 1st to early 2nd.

Well, you did mention something about BPA PERIOD.

I'm guessing DG was arguing your WR point simply because that was a specific qualifier you used ("even if it's a WR"). Personally, I think you're just about right about BPA with one big caveat. The FO should still factor in 'need'.

What I mean is that 'need' can be both short and long term. The FO should factor in things like current player's ages/likely longevity/contract length/talent etc to decide their likely needs - present and future.

Essentially, I think it's asinine to pick only based on one or the other (BPA or 'need'), instead the two should be used in conjunction.

You're absolutely right though that positions that seem set (adequate) for next year should not therefore be ignored in the draft, especially when you factor in development time for draft picks.
