If he retires today, he can be put on the reserved/retired list and the cap hit is distributed as if he'd retired after June 1.
A bad plan well executed may work. A good plan badly executed will always fail.
The only downside to the Davis deal would be if he exploded this year we'd be looking at having to pay him bigtime next offseason. I don't think it would be a huge issue because the cap restriction will be gone and I'd be willing to bet both Fletcher and Moss will not be here (either retirement or just not here) and that's another two larger cap numbers off the books.
As for Phillips - you're right. Great player, would dramatically improve our secondary. A healthy Meriweather + Phillips would be an outstanding safety duo. But that health question is a big IF. And with Meriweather also coming back from his own health issues, I think it's too risky of running into the exact same scenario we saw this year. I have always been a big fan of Phillips and the thought of having those two and easing a guy like Tanard Jackson onto the field in sub packages is pretty tempting. I just don't think we can afford that kind of risk and I thought Phillips was going to be kind of pricey.
I like Phillips, but with Meriweather coming back, I'm really interested in Swearinger out of SC.

Don't be surprised to see the #Redskins stay pat until 3/9 -3/12. Use the tampering time to see who they can sign before they release guys.
http://washingtonexaminer.com/restri...rticle/2523262 According to John Keim, the Redskins want to keep Fred Davis...
Unlike Jackson, it's doubtful Paulsen would pass on a multiyear deal elsewhere in the hopes of cashing in more as an unrestricted free agent. If the Redskins re-sign Fred Davis, as they are telling people they will do, then Paulsen would be a backup.
I personally hope we do keep Fred Davis, he along with Garcon are our most explosive receivers. He also has the potential to become elite, when you have a player like that you don't let them get away.
Will be very interested to see how we are under by 2.9 right now...still no news as to why?
Does anyone have a link (sorry if i missed it) to where it shows each team and their cap situation?
I'd think so, unfortunately. He'd be the highest paid #4 WR in the NFL. Especially if we bring Freddy back. There's only one football, unfortunately for this offense.

No link. Just tweets a page or two back and on the OP from jsteelz and TK last night. You know how we get
Brandon Myers - TE - Raiders Free agent Brandon Myers says it's his understanding that the Raiders will let him test the open market.
"I’m optimistic that they might give me an offer, but I guess they had a conversation at the Combine and it didn’t sound like they were ready to do that," Myers said. "We’ll just see where it takes us." Myers, who turns 28 before the season, is coming off career highs in catches (79), yards (806), and touchdowns (4). Source: Oakland Tribune Mar 5 - 1:18 AM
Darrelle Revis - DB - Jets Darrelle Revis stated Monday that it would be "awesome" to play for the 49ers.
The 49ers are loaded with draft picks and in better position than any NFL team to make a run at Revis. "I would just be an addition to help them win that trophy," Revis said. "Would it be awesome? Yeah." The comments hint Revis would be open to a one-year rental in San Francisco. Added Revis, "My main goal as a player -- and I think all of us as players in the NFL -- is to hold that Lombardi Trophy up in the air and wear that ring." Curtis Brown - DB - Steelers The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette believes the Steelers' re-signing of William Gay indicates a lack of confidence in 2011 third-round CB Curtis Brown.
The Steelers are now projecting Gay as their new nickel back or starter opposite Ike Taylor, depending on a likely camp battle with Cortez Allen. (We expect Allen to win that competition.) Brown struggled in sub-packages last season and figures to be relegated to special teams in 2013, assuming he makes the roster. Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Mar 5 - 1:04 AM
Wes Welker - WR - Patriots A source close to Wes Welker told Yahoo Sports that the free agent has "somewhat mild disdain" for the Patriots after OC Josh McDaniels used him sparingly in last year's season opener.
Per Cole, "that bit of tweaking stuck in Welker's craw all season," and "there's a little bit of paranoia in the Welker camp" about his role if he re-signs with New England. Welker shared time with Julian Edelman in Week 1, and Edelman started over Welker in Week 2. The Pats eventually turned back to Welker as a featured player, but only after Edelman and Aaron Hernandez got injured. Source: Yahoo Sports Mar 5 - 12:59 AM
Mike Brisiel - G - Raiders The agent for Raiders RG Mike Brisiel clarified that his client lost no money upon restructuring his contract.
Initially believed to have taken a pay cut, Brisiel will instead receive a guaranteed roster bonus of $3 million next week in exchange for slashing his salary from $4.35 million to $1.35 million. The $3 million payment will be treated like a signing bonus and prorated over the contract's life, lowering Brisiel's 2013 salary cap charge but increasing his cap number in future years. Larry Lumpkin - LB - Free Agent Former Carson-Newman LB Larry Lumpkin worked out at the UAB Pro Day, running a 4.65 in the forty-yard dash at 6-foot, 251 pounds.
Lumpkin also repped 225 pounds 30 times. After going unselected in last year's Supplemental Draft, he had a cup of coffee with the Colts. The measurables are good enough that Lumpkin might get another camp invite this summer. Source: TFY Draft Insider Mar 5 - 12:04 AM
Dashon Goldson - DB - 49ers ESPN's Adam Schefter doesn't expect free agent FS Dashon Goldson to re-sign with the 49ers.
"Goldson's going to be gone," tweeted Schefter. The 49ers refused to franchise tag Goldson for the second straight year, and he is seeking $8 million annually. Keeping him is thought to be a priority for San Francisco, but he may be too rich for their tastes. The 49ers could use the No. 34 pick they got from the Chiefs to find Goldson's replacement in what appears to be a strong safety class.
