Manny Benton was talking about him last night. I know some cats (to include me) liked him initially last season when we heard he was a release candidate, but I'd prefer a Brad Jones or a home grown talent.

Basically he's in the title to let guys know he may be out there and to continue to generate discussion.

A lot of players are on the market, the cap is flat, and we aren't the only team with cap issues -- so that might dampen salaries/initial interest, it wouldn't surprise me to see some teams just wait it out more than typically and force players to take bargain deals.

The stars -- Mike Wallace's, Jake Long's, etc probably get deals on day 1 or 2. But the 2nd and third tier players might dangle for awhile.

Edit: Shanny likes to play things close to the vest. My biggest question is does he have something surprising in store. The idea of a Wr wasn't surprising. And I recall some chatter about Morgan. The board talked a lot about V. Jackson. Garcon came somewhat out of the blue, if i recall.
I agree with you 100% on your assessment of the overall FA period. This will be a process, but I think initially we are going to get at least a whiff of where we are going with some guys.

And if we've learned one thing about our FO, it's that they know what they are doing and we see a lot of "I don't have a ****ing clue" how that happened... lol.

Well if the numbers are from the NFL Management Council, I thoroughly trust them. Well ... how about that. $2.9 million in cap space. That is pretty nice to see in a concrete report.

Taking a pay cut and restructuring are two different things. I want to believe that Tana has it in him to take a pay cut, but I'm not sure Drew Rosenhaus lets that happen. He'd basically have to be waived and come back and sign with us. That's unlikely and it rarely, and I mean, rarely happens. Right now he's the highest paid #3 WR in the league (if all stayed the same this year). But to restructure Tana would add years to the contract, and add dead money to future cap years when he is no longer on the team. He is 34 years old this season, so that's something to prepare yourself for.

I don't understand ... if we are currently $2.9 million under the cap ... why reporters, especially local ones who should know, keep saying we are $3m OVER?

Because the WaPo put out a piece about a week ago that we were $3 mil over. They are never wrong. Most of the others are on board now, this only came out yesterday or Tuesday. We found out Monday Night on this website

Hopefully, its a contract that protects the Skins in case of his past injury and the number is low.

Marcedes Lewis - TE - Jaguars The "feeling inside the building" is that Marcedes Lewis was underused last season.
Source: Florida Times Union Mar 7 - 9:41 AM

Maurice Jones-Drew - RB - Jaguars Maurice Jones-Drew (foot surgery) is expected to attend the Jaguars' first mini-camp even though he won't participate.
It's further confirmation that Jones-Drew has no intention of making a stink about his contract this year. He's currently rehabbing and attending classes at UCLA and is expected to be cleared for football activities by late May or early June. The Jags will have no problem running MJD into the ground next season as he enters the final year of his contract. Source: Florida Times Union Mar 7 - 9:34 AM

Blaine Gabbert - QB - Jaguars A source tells the Times Union that Blaine Gabbert's 2012 right forearm injury contained nerve damage.
Gabbert never returned after sustaining the injury in Week 11. Nerve damage is always concerning because it's extremely slow to heal and can sometimes affect the strength in an arm. Add it to the laundry list of concerns surrounding Gabbert as he preps for an open competition with Chad Henne. Source: Florida Times Union Mar 7 - 9:26 AM

Takeo Spikes - LB - Free Agent Chargers will release ILB Takeo Spikes.
New GM Tom Telesco is trying to instill a youth movement in San Diego, where they previously had 16 players at age-30 or older. Spikes had a base salary of $3 million and a cap number of $3.7 million in 2013. The Chargers decided that was too much for a 36-year-old linebacker that had just 79 tackles in 16 starts last season. Spikes, who has played for five different teams in his Pro-Bowl career, has no intention of retiring. He'd still fit nicely as a locker room leader and reserve linebacker on a young team. Source: Profootballtalk on NBCSports.com Mar 7 - 9:09 AM

Eagles rumored to be in on Chung:
Pat Chung - DB - Patriots ESPN Boston reiterates that free agent SS Pat Chung's days with the Patriots are likely over.
The Pats appear set at safety with Devin McCourty, Steve Gregory and Tavon Wilson. Chung played just two snaps in the AFC Championship game and will be looking for a more direct path to playing time. There's been previous speculation that the safety-needy Eagles could come calling. Chung could be a steal as he's still just 25 years old and showed a physical skill set before falling out of favor in New England. Source: ESPN Boston Mar 7 - 9:05 AM

Brian Hartline - WR - Dolphins The player rep for free agent Brian Hartline said the deal with the Dolphins isn't done quite yet.
Drew Rosenhaus took to the radio on Thursday morning to stir the pot. "If it doesnt happen with Dolphins, he'll get a lucrative deal w another team very quickly," the super-agent said. From the looks of things, there are just a few details to be ironed out. An official announcement on the deal is still expected before free agency opens on Tuesday. Source: Ben Volin on Twitter Mar 7 - 9:02 AM

Wes Welker - WR - Patriots According to the Boston Globe, the "overwhelming sentiment" from both sides is that free agent Wes Welker will re-sign with the Patriots.
ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss shared the exact same feeling on Wednesday. Although Welker may have been irked by his early-season demotion, it's not going to prevent him from re-upping with the Patriots. And once he hits the open market, he'll likely find that New England values him the most anyway thanks to his unique role in their scheme. The Globe says that all the wrangling in the media is just "part of the process." Source: Boston Globe Mar 7 - 8:51 AM

Our salary cap is at $109M after the $4M carryover.

Our salaries against the cap are at $106.1M.

There is no secret addition to the cap for us.
