@paulzuk_81: Ideas on how the redskins can rebuild their mediocre secondary?
@ESPN_NFCEast: We discussed this on the blog the other day, and I think the biggest need for the Washington Redskins is at safety. They like the way Brandon Meriweather fits the strong safety spot in their system, but he's coming off a season's worth of knee injuries, and they might not be able to count on him. And they need to upgrade from Madieu Williams at free safety. So I think they need to get a safety in free agency (Pittsburgh's Ryan Mundy feels like a realistic name who'd be a fit) and seriously think about one with one of their first couple of draft picks. They could find a starting-caliber safety in the second or third round, especially if they think Meriweather's going to come back healthy and the pick has time to develop. We also raised the idea of cornerback DeAngelo Hall moving to free safety, which I think could work if he's up for it and will take a pay cut. That would create a need at cornerback, but they kind of need to upgrade from Hall there anyway.

Can Hall really play safety?

Griffin said that he was going to watch the game with his family and that he will never attend a Super Bowl if he needs a ticket to get in.
I think most CB's can be converted to free safety
I'm not so sure about that.
Maybe free safety but even then the tackling and run support angles are very different and take some adjustment and the coverage keys, decisions and responsibilities are different and also take some adjustment. However it's rare in today's NFL that teams have a pure FS and SS they tend to be more interchangeable and in the SS role many CBs want little to do with getting in the box in run support fighting off the blocks of FBs and Gs or tackling TEs in inside zone coverage in the passing game.

First how he played in a preseason game is no gauge of how he might play in a real game but more importantly he will not be available to compete for anything to until the very end of preseason. His suspension does not expire until the end of August. It will then take him a few weeks to get into football shape assuming he has kept in reasonable generals shape during his full year off. I just don't see anyway you can count on him especially given his obvious drug problem and the strong possibility/likelihood he will let you down again.

Quin is who I have my eye on, he would be expensive but I doubt insanely expensive like it would be for Byrd who I expected to be franchised anyway. Bunch of articles though about optimism of Houston resigning him.

I like William Moore but i expect him also to be franchised. When its all said and done, wouldn't surprise me if the safety free agent class ends up thin like last year. I can see Corey Lynch being available. Maybe Kenny Phillips considering his injury history and the Giants have a ball hawk replacement on their roster. Maybe Delmas. Patrick Chung? http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/new-e...e-for-patriots
Dan Graziano mentioned Mundy from the Steelers but I am not impressed with him, seems more of a pure strong safety.

In theory, you go corner in free agency and find your safety/safeties in a deep class. But am starting to wonder about corner too, don't see an obvious #1 type corner available. Grimes is coming off a major injury and is pushing 30. Maybe Derek Cox, who is young but injury prone. Rodgers-Cromartie who these days is far from a shut down corner. Talib is talented but has off field issues. Sean Smith I think will be franchised or Dolphins have plenty of cap room to over pay. Maybe Cary Williams but he's a #2 corner type not a #1.
Maybe Chris Houston but wonder if he gets franchised.

"ESPN recently ranked Houston as the second-best free-agent-to-be cornerback behind New England's Aqib Talib, and the No. 20 player available overall."

Leodis McKelvin might be an interesting option at CB.

Great kickoff and punt returner but has struggled to emerge as a corner and for that matter break into the buffalo lineup as even the #2 corner, played some nickle if i recall this year.

Can't wait for the Senior Bowl week/game and Combine. I think we get a clearer picture as to who they might be interested in. You never know with Shanahan until the draft itself.
You know, I like Nield, but... the only time I really noticed him was opening day vs the Giants last year (as you said, the game he flashed in) and he said on both sacks he blew his assignment and found himself in a position to make the sack(s). Maybe he was just being humble, but this makes me wonder if we're overrating him just a bit.
As for Carriker, I was surprised that Haslett considers him our best lineman vs the run, especially since he racked up 5.5 sacks as a 3-4 end. I think his return will be a big plus for the D.
