San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent SS Dashon Goldson said he expects to re-sign with the team in the offseason. "We haven't spoken anything about a contract, but I don't see why I wouldn't be around," Goldson said. The 49ers could place the franchise tag on Goldson for $7.45 million next season if they don't agree to a multiyear deal.
I think he was too expensive for us anyway, but if he does go off the market that hurts us by making the rest of the market more competitive because there will be less talent, though that depends on how the 49ers replace him.

Too old anyway. Normally I'd be worried about the hole created there in terms of us having to compete with them for signings, but then I remembered it's the Browns, and that we win tiebreakers.

The Washington Redskins are expected to try to re-sign impending free-agent TE Fred Davis (Achilles') this offseason. The team could try to sign him to a multi-year deal or place the franchise tag on him.
Good news, IMO. If Davis is healthy I think he's the best TE we can hope to field for the 2013 season.

This kid was drafted in the 7th round of 2009 by Minnesota and has fought his way in to the starting lineup. He is undersized at 5'10 200 (I think he is really 5'9) but he brings the pain with his hits.
He also has a knack for stripping the ball (5 forced fumbles in 2012). Vikings fans and Frazier do not want to see him go, but if he hits the market, he could be cheap and a very good option to compete for the starting spot.
It's funny cus when you read about this kid, the fans are mostly making fun of Madieu Williams and they are so glad to have real talent on the team lol.
He could be a younger gunner on ST's as well as split Safety duties.
If he's there grab him. Meriweather's injuries from last year make me wary, and the more solid depth we can acquire cheaply, the easier it will be to go BPA in the draft.

    DogofWar -

Agreed. Goldson was never in the plans anyway, I can almost guarantee that. If he has a good showing at the SB, which I expect, he is going to get paid either way. I am so thankful this is a deep S/CB class in the draft. I'd take TJ McDonald, Reid, Rambo, or Elam in a heartbeat.

I'm not a huge fan of Sheldon Brown, I just remember that hit on Reggie Bush on a RB screen where Reggie had to crawl off the field and in the press conference he talked like he "got right back up" hahaha.

I'm really gunning for a resigning of Freddy D, but I won't hold my breath. He's a chill dude, but we all know money talks and I don't see us overpaying. He said it last year before we tagged him that he's going to go where he feels wanted in terms on money. Maybe the injury helped us in retaining him. I'm praying for Travis Kelce in the draft, regardless if we retain Fred or not. I will be ecstatic if we pick him up.

Meriweather shines when he's on the field... trouble is getting him on the field. I won't hold my breath on him starting or even being on the team. Remember when we used to rely so much on our "starting" OLineman and as soon as one went down, we were completely screwed? I hope we can learn from these mistakes.

Not sure where it was said, posted or tweeted but Fred Davis said his injury was similar in severity to what Terrell Suggs had, which if you think about it, Suggs was able to come back during this past season and looked pretty good.

Other than eventually needing a Moss replacement, who would you cut or demote out of that group?

I prefer the committee approach like New Orleans uses over what the Lions and Cardinals are doing with one stud. All of our guys demand some level of respect which means that one or more of them will ultimately shake free or provide a lot of space underneath for other pass-catchers (RB, FB, TE, etc.).
Well, except that when Garcon was missing in the lineup, the passing game went south. Morgan was a solid possession receiver and Moss did a good job in limited work, but everyone else is a question mark. While I don't see big FA money being spent, there is definitely room for an upgrade here.

Not to mention, looking beyond 2013, we have a lot of question marks. Morgan's in his contract year, Moss is 34, and we don't know if Robinson can amount to anything other than a one-dimensional deep threat. And while I think Hankerson has the potential to play in this league at a high level, if he doesn't realize that potential he's likely a #3 WR, and not much more.

If we're not careful, we could be right back to where we were in 2010 come the 2014 season, with a solid #1, and a #3 guy masquerading as a #2. I don't think that will actually happen, pretty much everything would have to go wrong for that scenario to happen, but I wouldn't be opposed to bringing in someone for the slot for the long term, or another outside threat who can compliment Garcon.

Completely agree. The best passing teams in the league are constantly replenishing their stables at the skill positions on offense. We don't know if Garcon will ever be a guy we can consistently count on for 16 games, or when Moss or Morgan will all of a sudden just become nonfactors.

I love the idea of going for the BPA at each round, and taking a receiver in the 2nd or the 3rd. Or heck, go and grab some young talented, but unproven guys in free agency. We just need to keep stocking up and finding new players.

    HUGE NEWS!!!

NFL | Vernon Carey coming out of retirement
    Thu, 31 Jan 2013 11:46:12 -0800

Retired OL Vernon Carey has announced they he is coming out of retirement.

He may be a stop gap, but the former first rounder in 2004 should be fresh. He played the majority of snaps at RT for the Dolphins but also started at Guard and LT. Rarely missed playing time due to injuries.

He was out of football for a year and decided to coach but I'd give this guy a shot in a heartbeart. I always remember him being a solid dude on a weak Oline until they drafted Long.

He has held his first round grade fairly well i'd say, rarely gave up sacks and was rated highly by PFF.

Good locker room presence as well... Very cheap option as he may have trouble finding work.

This is a guy I was going to post about. Beyond the whole "Music City Miracle" he seemed to get a lot of production out of the return game with a lot of different players. Not sure how his coverage units held up but he seems like he could bring a boost to the return game.

    http://blogs.tennessean.com/titans/2...alan-lowry-go/

So why did Munchak let Alan Lowry go?

After all, the Titans were consistently better on special teams in 2012 than any other unit. I gave special teams a B in my final report card, which beat the Ds and Fs in other phases.

In 2012, the Titans had four returns for touchdowns, including three by Darius Reynaud. They were among the NFL’s best in punt and kick returns. Punter Brett Kern broke a franchise record for net and gross average. The Titans struggled on coverage teams, yes, and kicker Rob Bironas didn’t have his best year (25-of-31). But Lowry can’t kick for Bironas.

I’m sure Munchak feels the Titans will be reenergized on special teams behind the direction of a younger, more fiery assistant coach. Special teams assistant Chet Parlavecchio, who Munchak hired in 2011, has a big personality and provided some nice ideas. He doesn’t have the 31 years of NFL experience, however.

I was just coming to post that. I read it on facebook. The more I read about him the more I like him.

We like Rambo because he's a centerfielder with range. This kid is a centerfielder with range as well. And ideally we won't need him much in run support with how low our Strong Safety plays.

I will be doing reviews on a lot of the FA safeties but I really like what I saw from Lynch. He may not be a player that goes to pro bowls but he is a very good player with upside. Would be a smart signing imo.

Nuggets from earlier in the day that I didn't see yet. For the Ed Reed Army:
Appearing on NFL Live, Adam Schefter mentioned the Colts and Patriots as potential landing spots for impending free agent FS Ed Reed.
The Bill Belichick love affair for Ed Reed has been exhausted by this point, but another man that has strong ties to Reed is Colts head coach Chuck Pagano. Pagano was Reed's defensive backs coach at Miami (Fla.) before the two were together again with the Ravens from 2008-11. The Colts could use an upgrade over Tom Zbikowski back deep.

ESPN's Adam Schefter stated on NFL Live Thursday that the Ravens may "very well" end up releasing Anquan Boldin after the Super Bowl.
Per Schefter, the Ravens are $5 million over the projected 2013 salary cap, "and that's before they get a deal done with Joe Flacco." Franchise tagging Flacco would put them roughly $20 million over the cap. Cutting Boldin would save Baltimore about $5.5 million. Although it's not a move the Ravens would like to make, "financial pressures" may force them to. Schefter added that releasing Jacoby Jones could free up another $3.5 million.

First, I am a big fan of extending Josh Wilson. He is a boundry guy who needs reliable safety play (which he didn't get) and he performs well when he gets it.

As far as Dick Crawford goes, I like the kid a lot, but I see him as another boundry guy, too. He got eaten up in the slot. I know that comes with experience, but for all of the crap we gave D. Hall, he played fairly well in the slot. I don't mind Crawford competing for "Nickelback" in title (essentially the 3rd corner), but I'd hate for him to be out there in the slot unless he improves dramatically this offseason.

Totally agree on Lynch. I hadn't heard of the dude before this thread. He may be a great fit here and I hope we get him.
