+1 I like Hall, I think he's underrated by many fans. He's a playmaking CB and a solid tackler. But, if there's a chance to sign Toler or Lewis (especially Lewis) for less money then I'm all aboard with taking that shot. Tell Hall, we want you back in Burgundy and Gold but we're up against the cap hit and can't afford you at that number. Shop around and see what you can then come back and talk to us. This gives us time to strike a deal with Lewis/Toler.

That's probably the fairest way to do it. I think that's a bit of a gamble though. Especially with a team that feels they are a corner away from a ring. Not sure how much cap room Denver has because we aren't competing for a lot of the same guys but that's the first team to come to mind. Also, Belichek might have the mouthpiece to sign him to a lesser deal if he has Ed Reed locked up already.

While a move to $122 million represents an increase of only $1.4 million per team, every dollar helps, given the number of teams in cap trouble.
An increase in the unadjusted cap also increases the per-team minimum spending requirement, which commences this year. On a four-year rolling average, teams must spend in cash 89 percent of the annual unadjusted cap.

I wonder if that requirement is adjusted for the lower cap allowed the Skins? Or are we potentially screwed twice?

Peppers could actually play 4-3 DE, 3-4 DE, or preferably in our scheme, 3-4 OLB.

This is my point precisely. This isn't all about D. Hall. I didn't take a single shot at him in my post. It's purely about making a decision that's driven by making an apples to apples comparison -- is it better to have A or is it better to have B. And the quality, age, and salary of B -- is totally on point to the subject at hand as opposed to B being mutually exclusive to A.

If I'm not mistaken, Hall is owed something like $9 million this year, $1 million of which is guaranteed. That's why the team would "save" $8 million by releasing him outright. That being said, the Redskins hold the cards here. Hall is in no position to demand guaranteed money and seems willing to renegotiate. Honestly, I have no idea what they would offer him or what he would take, but if they settled on a 3 year $15 million extension ... with say ... $4 million on the books for '13 ... $5 million for '14 and $6 million for '15 ... but make 2013 fully guaranteed and make 2014 half guaranteed. I know there are limits to what percentage of a contract can be guaranteed so I might be off ... but that would allow them to keep Hall around inexpensively for two more years (relative to his current payout) and part ways with him in 2015 without taking a cap hit. If he doesn't want the restructure, release him and go get Toller or Lewis and draft a CB in the 3rd or 4th. The Skins hold the cards here and Hall knows that ... and $9 million over the next two years isn't anything to sneeze at for Hall, either. Just take that $9 million he is owed this year and make it guaranteed over the next two years.

The way i know it has worked with the team with some players in the past is they'd take that 9 million and turn it into guaranteed money with a bonus component which allows them to spread it out over years. Your way is more of a pure renegotiating the contract as opposed to the typical Redskins restructure. To play devils advocate, in that case the player might not feel they are being offered market value and would ask to test the market instead.

Whatever the cap is, we have to be $17.6 mil below it. If it goes up 1 and a quarter mil, then we get $1.25 as well.

you might have missed that when the offseason started... Hall knows that he isnt going to get paid 8-9 mil / year now so he is openly willing to renegotiate his contract but of course we will see how much of a pay cut he is willing to take. I hope the Redskins are fair to him. As I suggested before ~3-4 million pay cut out be a nice medium in which Redskins save some room in the cap penalty year and Hall doesnt feel like he is getting screwed over. Remember this is different than restructure which only pushes the dead cap to the future.

I hope they can work something out with Hall so that we can get him to come back for a contract that will pay him average of 4-5 mil for next 3-4 years. If most of the money is guarranteeed then I think Hall might take the deal.... And I dont see Hall as a player that will get lazy cause he got paid... never came across that way to me...

Also, don't forget that Hall has already signed two large contracts. Granted, he was released in the first year of the Oakland deal, but I'm sure he still saw plenty of that guaranteed dough. He is also in the last year of a great deal he signed with the Redskins. The Skins took a shot on him when seemingly no one else would ... and Hall went to VT ... so you'd think that he would be fair in his demands. He genuinely seems like he wants to be here. He's also not THAT old. Yeah, he's going to be 31 ... but people think he's older because he came in to the league so young. Is this going to be his 10th season? Charles Woodson is still balling at 38 ... I don't think Hall has lost a step ... no reason to cut ties with someone who has been very good.
