Brian Simmons, a 6-foot-5, 304-pound offensive lineman who started all 18 games at left tackle for the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats last season, worked out for the Washington Redskins last week, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Simmons, 27, played four seasons in college at Oklahoma, where he was a teammate of left tackle Trent Williams and occasionally started next to him at left guard. He was in New England’s training camp in 2010 after going undrafted, then signed with Hamilton for the 2011 season.

A pending CFL free agent, Simmons has been pursuing an opportunity in the NFL. He was scheduled for workouts with six teams, including Miami, with whom he worked out two weeks ago.

Also, if you can use the 2nd rounder on safety there should be ample choices, one or more of these guys should be there at #2: Swearinger, Elam, Reid, Thomas, Jefferson, McDonald.
Yep! I totally agree. Another benefit of having football people making the decisions, I garuntee you that there are about 200 different scenarios and at least an A through F caveat for each of those scenarios for this offseason.

I can't tell you enough how excited I am. We are going to be cutting guys off of this squad who will start somewhere else in the league. That's how far we've come.

So he'd be eligible for a futures contract since he is technically PS eligible since he's been in Canada. Huh... we love our Oklahoma linemen here in Washington, DC.

Cb's Shield, Porter,Talib and Mckelvin are oung cb's i'm interested in in (pick two).
We cant afford 2 premium FA CBs. MAYBE 1 plus another mid level guy, maybe 2 midlevel guys

Potrter and then draft "Xavior" the cb out of Florida State would be nice.
That would be more then nice, it would be incredible. If he's there in the 2nd we better run to the microphone.
Byrd would also be sweet for safety
Not gonna happen. We cant afford him and plus BUFF wont let him go. Theyll franchise him if he doesnt resign.

we need to at least get a mlb in training to split time with fletcher if not out right take over for him
. We did last yr with Kenan Robinson. I also think that you may see Rob Jackson moved to ILB since his coverage skills seem to be so good.
I like Shields from Green Bay
dont we all but thats not gonna happen either.

Allen will have to earn his pay check bigtime this year in creativity for the Redskins to get the players they need to take the next step
    . Totally agree

Hall will have to decide how much he is willing to play for, or should i say how little
. Is a ham sandwich to little? Seriously though I cant stand Hall, but I know there are others who disagree.

I think Merriweather is defintely worth another look and Jackson at least a look.
Merriweather could be a cap casualty depending how his knee is coming along and Jackson cant step foot with the Redskins until after training camp (I think ) so I doubt you will see him back.

Phillips and Merriweather would be a U revival at the Safety positions
. You want Kenny Phillips too? How much cap space do we have????

Brandon Albert would be sweet to put him next to Montgomery, I know people will say i am nuts putting him next to Chester
. Pretty confused? I am assuming you mean Albert at LG, but that would not put him next to Chester. He's on the other side.

Yes, Kory L. did great last year and should be brought back but as good as he was Albert would be that much better .
after Kory has played very well the last 2 yrs, I can all but guarentee that he will not be signing here as a backup.

Ryan Harris would be a good Rt for us,
This has been debated alot on here and I wont disagree that he would be an upgrade from Polumbus. But his injury history scares the hell out of me.

Fred Davis and J Cook would give us 2 targets at TE that can go deeper and faster than we have had before.
We are not going to sign 2 pass catching TEs. I think you can choose between the 2 and personally, I would take Cook.

Maybe the mlb out of North Carolina
. I am assuming you mean Kevin Reddick. he could still be there in the 3rd but I personally think we are good there with Robinson learning, Lorenzo backsing up and possibly Jackson making the switch to ILB.

He has to be a June 1st cut. I'd rather save the 3 million this year with the penalty and deal with the 2 million in 2014 when we get 18 million back and we may even get some rollever from 2013. I think someone mentioned we got 4 million to roll over from 2012 to 2013.

Agreed. I think that's why you didn't see him get cut during the season... he didn't cost a roster spot anyways. Brown has been a frustration, I just hope that we don't fall for the same act and let him collect a paycheck for doing yoga again. He's another year older as well.

I still think, at the time, that I would've signed Harris up, but at least Brown got on the field some that year. That was a tough year for FA tackles.

    Steel City Insiders confirmed:

Keenan Lewis is seeking 5 yr, $35 million... This is definitely doable. Considering guys like Asomugha got a 5 year, $60 million contract, $25 guaranteed.

I'd go with this... give him a base salary of $3 million this year (2013), with a signing bonus of $7 million, and $10 million guaranteed.

That $7 million can be split over the 5 years for a total of $1.4 million/year. That's a cap hit of $4.4 million for 2013.

His base salary thereafter for the remaining 4 years would escalate to $4.85 million/year and including the signing bonus of $1.4 million/ year would be $6.25 million/year . We would then have our cap back under normal circumstances.

Considering Hall is due to make over $8 million next year, we could certainly meet in the middle with the two and all sides would be happy.

    And, my head hurts lol

I based this all off of Pierre Garcon's contract but I changed the numbers quite a bit, considering Garcon got 11/mil signing bonus and 20.5/mil guarantted on a 42/mil contract.

Oh it's doable. I think we are more flexible this year then we were last year. Especially with the TV money kicking in soon and the rollover. We just have to be smart with the veterans we cut and how much dead money we acquire.

If Keenan Lewis is asking for that, I wouldn't mind paying that. 5y/35M is a pretty reasonable amount of money, definitely doable.

Hall's contract, if he is willing to restructure, might cover Lewis' first year all on its own, which would be huge and allow us to look at the draft with more of a BPA strategy.

While I would wait to see what happens with Talib, Smith, Houston, Williams, DRC, Cox, and a few others to gauge if we can get an even better deal, this Lewis deal looks to be about as good as we'll see in the offseason.

And we could probably implement packages with Hall at FS if he came in, which would be great. Hall has trouble with coverage, but the man can snag a ball out of the air. If Hall is playing over the top, teams will have to be very careful tossing it downfield, vs. waiting for someone to beat Hall then getting it to the WR.

I think there is a greater chance that it could be more as there is crazy amount of money availiable this year for FAs. Now we can question if some of these teams will use it all or roll it over yet again but there is no way for the Redskins to win in a bidding war with more than half of the league. Especially with all of the other needs we have on the team.

I think better choice for next 1-2 years is to just get some older CBs for value that can just hold up and try to groom some talented but raw CBs that we can pick up in the draft.

We got too many positions to fill for next year and with 18 mil cap hit.. its going to be hard to land young quality guys at premier positions wuch as CB.

I'm not sure that there will be all that much rollover because I think the floor comes in to effect this year. If not this year, then next year for sure. Which is why I think we'll have to pick out one or two guys who'll have the most impact via free agency. Certainly we should pick out guys for competition (So'oto, Merling, etc.) but I wouldn't expect more than two guys to come in and contribute on a regular basis.

We can do both. We signed Morgan/Garcon to reasonable contracts for A/B type players under a hard contract year when we were focusing on a receiving corps... This year we will hopefully focus on the "back 4." I could easily see us landing a starting corner in FA and a B caliber Safety... Also will see some depth in the draft.

We are most certainly strapped, but look at Garcon who only made $4.4 million this year but it escalates to $6.0 this coming year and $7.1 over the remaining 3 year.... It can be done my friend.

A B-caliber safety would be a huge step up. I have no idea Merriweather's progress, but his loss was huge for us. Tanard Jackson's suspension was almost as huge... but, we had C and D caliber safeties because of those losses, almost at times like we had 9 guys on the field.

Senior Bowl practices are this week... there's some prospects there.

Vinny Cerrato believes he gave Jim Zorn a roster that can make the playoffs. A playoff kicker doesn't miss that kick. A playoff safety doesn't bite multiple times by a double move in the same game.

I'd also like to see Martellus Bennett signed to complement Fred Davis, while also keeping Logan Paulsen as well... That, or draft Travis Kelce in the draft....

There is no way Freddy D gets the $5.45 mil he made in 2012... I'd say more in the ballpark of 3-4 mil/year on a cap friendly, incentive laden contract which will leave space for Martellus Bennett who I'm thinking would sign around $1.75 mil/year.

We will see some good college players this year. Very deep Safety class... People just need to get the Jarius Byrd/ William Moore thought out of their heads cus that's completely unattainable pipe dreams...
