I believe he's just pointing out that we would be pushing the problem into future years and marrying ourselves to an older player without upside. I'm not against the idea but if that is his point I can see that side as well. Mike and Bruce have made it clear they don't want to push cap problems into future years the way this franchise has in the past.

HTTR24-7.com @HTTR24_7 The surprising tone of the offseason will be the #Redskins adding weapons to the offense vs loading up on D.

Secondary HAS to be top priority follwed closely by a RT. We have a great group of LB's between Rak, Kerrigan, Fletcher, Riley, Robinson, 'Zo, and Jackson. Could use help on the D-line to generate more push. Adding a game-breaking WR or a TE is more of a luxury than a necessity.

Nice! That'll go up in rumors on the OP. Thank you.
I don't disagree though. If we can get a Safety who can start somewhere (early in the draft or via FA) then I truly think this defense can be lethal. Another Corner would be nice but it isn't essential. Free Safety is. Other than that, we can get WRs all week long and twice on Sunday.

Then he should have said that. You can (I suppose) argue that the team shouldn't be re-doing contracts, but asking the benefit to doing it is really a pointless question.
Personally, my first course of action would be to release some players who won't be here much longer anyway and can create cap by being cut (Hall, Fletcher, Moss). But as it stands, restructuring is going to be part of this offseason. There's not much point in complaining about it, because it's going to happen.
Keep in mind we aren't likely to have as much turnover this year in key positions as we've had in past years. We have a young nucleus (for the most part) and we have about 3-5 pieces to add before we are wear we want to be. I suspect we get two of those positions via the draft (WR/CB, S/RT) and two via FA (S/CB, WR) and we might be suprising some people next season around this time.
I truly believe that.

lunchtime rotoworld nuggets:
More "Ed Reed to Indy" talk. This time from Peter King:
SI's Peter King believes Super Bowl XLVII was likely Ed Reed's last game in a Ravens uniform.
King's opinion isn't breaking news, but part of a growing consensus around the league. Although Reed sent mixed signals about his future in a Sunday interview with NFL Network, he ultimately insisted that he'll be back for a 12th NFL season in 2013. According to CBS' Jason La Canfora, "a lot of people" around the league expect Reed to reunite with coach Chuck Pagano in Indianapolis. Reed would probably have to sign an extremely team-friendly deal to stick around in Baltimore.
Karma is a cold *****:
Ravens DT Haloti Ngata says his left knee is "feeling better" on Monday morning.
Ngata was seen walking through the team hotel on Monday morning without the aid of crutches or assistance of any kind, and was later even spotted jogging through the lobby. Although it's encouraging news, we really won't know the extent of the injury until the Ravens get back to Baltimore and Ngata undergoes an MRI on Monday. The injury was initially classified as a "sprain."

I think it has to be to some extent also, because I think there's a very good chance that by 2014 we're going to need to have 4 starters back there who aren't on the roster right now. And at least a couple of new backups. Some of that work has to be done this offseason, imo.
That's nice, but I'm not sure what it has to with what I was saying. We are (apparently) over the cap right now, with a number of our own FAs to re-sign, RFAs to be tendered, draft picks to sign, and you're advocating bringing in at least 2 starters in FA. Obviously we need to make a good amount of cap space.
Barry Cofield is LEGIT... no more nonsense about we need a "real" NT... HE IS THE REAL DEAL!!!! He goes to the Pro Bowl this year, book it!!!
