Put me among the group that wants to see Jackson at least given an up or down vote by Daniels. He should NOT be our #1 FS plan as last year, at best he should be #2 in our grand scheme, but he is talented and cheap. While his 3 suspensions concern me greatly, they all came based on things he did in Tampa in the Tampa culture. Our culture here has changed greatly over the past couple years, and if Daniels has been working with him, he might be able to turn it around.

I would really hate for him to have changed his lifestyle here under Daniels's watch, only for him to go somewhere else and perform well. There are a ton of reasons he might not work out besides suspension, for example, he might not be in football shape. On the off chance he is healthy, fit, and reinstated, I think he needs to be on this team, as our #2 FS, not #1, going into the season.

I think we would do well to keep Meriweather, sign Lynch or Mundy, get Jackson back, and draft a safety in round 2 or 3, in addition to keeping Bernstine and Doughty or Gomes.

I do not want to tread water at the S position, or any position for that matter.
Meriweather and TJax were available band-aids last offseason because they're weren't very good the previous season.
The only thing thats changed is they're a year removed from the same status they held coming into last offseason and between the 2 of them they played 2? quarters of good football?

I hope the teams aims to upgrade the S position.

Sure. If all of these factors pan out, he might be worth the risk:

    1. He's reinstated
    2. He's given the Daniels green light
    3. He lays off the dope (allegedly)
    4. He's in football shape
    5. He's in mental football shape
    6. He becomes a better tackler

    Let me ask you this:

Take yourself (not just you, DoW, but everyone) out of fan mode for a second. Be a GM. A business man, a talent evaluator, and in charge of a franchise. If you can honestly tell me you think you'd give Jackson the benefit of the doubt, then by all means, continue to give him the benefit of the doubt and let's see what happens. But, if you wouldn't make that decision in the best interest of the team... then why would the team?

That's what it comes down to for me.

If I were the GM of the Washington Redskins, the guy isn't worth the risk.

The front office already took a chance on him last year knowing full well he could be suspended. If he is reinstated I think its way less risky this year than last to sign him. He was the best safety on the roster in the pre season games IMO. He had me really excited.

To me, and again, this MIGHT just be me... Your first sentence is the reason why he shouldn't be given another chance.

I hear you. He is not an alter boy thats for sure but now that the suspension is dealt with and over it just seems to me that if they took that risk last year they will again this year. Maybe we will bring in his buddy Talib and we can name them cheech and chong.

I will. Based on this season, PD is 2-0.

I do see KDawgs argument and really, whichever direction Mike and Bruce go with the kid you can't really disagree (unless they sign him without the blessing of PD).

I concur. A lot of character and availablity issues for 2 guys who aren't that good anyway. No reason we shouldn't move on.

I don't think you can make it work with both. To me this is a no-no. If we bring in Talib, Jackson has to go. If you keep Jackson, Talib is now not an option. In order to change someone you cannot have them surrounded by temptation. When he knew Talib, he was using... that's just not a good idea.

I agree with KDawg there is no way I hold out a valuable spot on the 53 for Jackson. Not sure if he is eligble for the PUP but that is the only way I would ever consider keeping Jackson around this team. Place him on the PUP for 6 weeks (he'll need that time to get into any sort of shape due to missing the ENTIRE off season program) then evaluate him just like we did with Jamal Brown. If Jackson has not been suspended in that time and he is in football shape both physically, mentally AND is a clear upgrade for the roster then and only then would I CONSIDER placing him on the 53.

I remember when this guy was drafted. Wow.

Philly Mag suggests G Danny Watkins could be a candidate for release.
Watkins, the No. 23 overall pick in the 2011 draft, has conjured up thoughts of legendary Eagles draft busts such as Mike Mamula and Jerome McDougle. It got so bad last season that he lost his starting job to a street free agent and finished out the year as a healthy scratch. Chip Kelly will make his own evaluations, but it's clear Andy Reid had given up hope. Watkins reportedly carries a $2.15 million hit if he's cut before next season.

To me, Jackson can't be slated as the starter, probably shouldn't be slated as the #2 FS, but might not be a bad option as the 5th safety. This would depend on a few things though, including:

If we don't wind up with a promising FS prospect (after grabbing a starter in FA)
    If Doughty isn't re-signed
If Gomes and Pugh don't seem up to snuff
If Bernstine is either not fully healthy or if they see him as more of a SS
Whether Jackson has stayed clean since coming to Washington and if he can get into shape quickly

With no FS on the roster currently, we could probably do worse than Jackson (as a backup) assuming he's been clean since signing with the team.

Situation is always a part of a process. However, I disagree with the last line:

Just because he's been clean doesn't mean he'll remain clean. Therefore, Jackson, even if skillwise better than other options, may not be a better choice as he may not be around.
