I agree and would think that would apply to "servicable" players. How many Stud tackles are out there who couldn't crack the starting lineup behind a weak link? With our salary cap penalty and lack of early draft picks, perhaps 'servicable" is the best we can hope for at the moment.

I've been one of the staunchest proponents of strength through the trenches. But, based on what this FO has said/done at the RT position and considering the level of success the offense (4th in yards/5th in scoring) has with the current level of RT play (Tyler is terrible, near league worst) and given Mike Shanahan's history of mid/late round success with OL and given that the ZBS produces a unit that is better then the sum of its parts and given that Hurt/Compton are possible in house candidates: I don't think upgrading the RT spot requires using top level rounds resources(1-3) via the draft.
Sure, like I said, if they trust Compton or whatever they have in mind in house fills that position or if they take a flier on someone late in the draft, I won't sweat RT.

The draft seems deep at corner and safety so I do think even if they aren't desperate for upgrading those units, I'd exploit that depth, nonetheless. Last year for example, the depth at safety was terrible in the draft. On offense, WR seems deep so wonder if they grab one. On the draft thread there was a post about how Patton is going to be gone by our pick. I don't see it, how many WRs are teams going to take? Or if he's gone, there will be someone unexpected WR there at our pick like Hunter.

I saw a major mock two years ago that had Hankerson as a late first rounder where NE took him. He was generally an early 2nd rounder in most mocks. Can't recall any that had him in the late third where we got him. Calais Campbell was mostly a mid to late first in mocks, again drafted in the late 2nd. R. Randle who the Giants took late 2nd -- mostly a late first rounder, early 2nd rounder in mocks.

Generally, when you have positions that are deep, a guy will fall because every team has different needs. My point is I think its likely Shanny will have a choice to make in the late 2nd for a player we don't expect to be there, which guy that is, obviously you got me but yeah all of a sudden you could be starring for example at one of these guys: Eric Reid, T. Williams, DJ Fluker, J. Poyer, Ertz, Rhodes.

This plays into your point of BPA which I agree with. With a late 2nd rounder, you often see a surprise player or two available and IMO you capitalize on that guy if he's highest on your board. We talk about this player or that player who in theory deserve to be a high 2nd rounder or low first rounder, but when its all said and done what's likely going to come down is one of two of those guys are going to slip and that choice will in a way be made for us.

Mundy is free and unrestricted. He doesn't have to sign a tender.

    Morning rotoworld.com nuggets:

    Eagles DC news:

CBS' Jason La Canfora "continues to hear" Georgia DC Todd Grantham could accept the same position with the Eagles.
Grantham was the early favorite to serve as Chip Kelly's defensive boss, but NFL.com's Albert Breer reported on January 21 the Eagles were "(planning to stay) in the NFL" when hiring a coordinator. Grantham hasn't been directly linked to the Eagles in nearly three weeks. Grantham — a 3-4 specialist — will reportedly interview for the Saints' DC job on Thursday.
ESPN New York does not consider Giants FS Antrel Rolle a candidate for release.
More specifically, beat writer Ohm Youngmisuk believes Rolle isn't "going anywhere." It's a bit surprising, as the 30-year-old Rolle is due a whopping $7 million coming off a sub-par campaign. With the Giants up against the salary cap, it's quite possible Rolle will at least be asked to restructure.
CBS' Jason La Canfora mentions Champ Bailey as a potential cap casualty for the Broncos.
Bailey is due a $9.5 million base salary, in addition to a $1 million roster bonus. Turning 35 in June, we all saw Bailey struggle badly to contain Torrey Smith in the Divisional Round. Still, he was nails in the regular season, grading out as Pro Football Focus' No. 10 corner. Bailey has two years left on his deal.

Buccaneers | Eric Wright could be cut
Tampa Bay Buccaneers CB Eric Wright struggled last season and is set to make $7.7 million in 2013. He could be cut in the offseason.

Falcons | Dunta Robinson could be cut
The Atlanta Falcons could cut CB Dunta Robinson ($8 million) to create cap room to sign QB Matt Ryan to a long-term deal.

Raiders | Rolando McClain likely gone
Oakland Raiders LB Rolando McClain ($4 million) is likely to be a salary cap casualty in the offseason. The team will probably look to recoup some signing bonus as well due to disciplinary issues.

Jets | Calvin Pace likely to be cut
The New York Jets are likely to cut LB Calvin Pace in the offseason. They are way over the salary cap, and he's slated to count $11.6 million against it. The team will likely try to restructure him at a lower price.

Steelers | James Harrison could be cut
Pittsburgh Steelers LB James Harrison could be cut in the offseason. He has a $6.6 million salary, and injuries have slowed him. Sources say Harrison isn't expected to take a pay cut to stay without exploring the market first.

Jets | Bart Scott likely to be cut
The New York Jets are likely to cut LB Bart Scott in the offseason. They are way over the salary cap, and he's slated to count $8.7 million against it.

Chiefs | Tyson Jackson likely to be cut
Kansas City Chiefs DL Tyson Jackson, who is slated to make $14.72 million in 2013, is likely to be cut in the offseason.

Packers | Jermichael Finley could be cut
Green Bay Packers TE Jermichael Finley is expected to be cut in the offseason, according to league sources. He'll make $4.4 million with a $3 million roster bonus in 2013.

Raiders | Darrius Heyward-Bey could be cut
Oakland Raiders WR Darrius Heyward-Bey ($7.7 million) is likely to be a salary cap casualty in the offseason.

Cowboys | Doug Free likely to be cut
Dallas Cowboys OT Doug Free ($7 million) is likely to be a salary cap casualty in the offseason.

Giants | Ahmad Bradshaw to be cut loose?
New York Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw (foot) is due to make $3.75 million in base salary in 2013, and head coach Tom Coughlin is a fan of Bradshaw and likes to have three running backs on his roster. However, he recently had surgery to replace a screw in his troublesome right foot, and he could be a candidate for released.

    Giants | Cut Michael Boley
The New York Giants cut LB Michael Boley Tuesday, Feb. 5.

    Browns | Cut Frostee Rucker
The Cleveland Browns cut DE Frostee Rucker Tuesday, Feb. 5.

That is pretty funny regarding Wright considering he was part of the Tampa spending spree last season. Serves them right. I didn't really see much of him this year though how did he look. Would him or Dunta be worth bringing in if cheap? I know we had interest in Wright last offseason.

Also, I think Heyward-Bey would shine in this offense with his size and speed. You really can't hold it against him playing in that black hole out in Oakland. He was never as good a top 10 pick IMO but he could be a nice weapon for RG3. No idea on what it would cost to snag him but considering he has underperformed his current contract it might be something to look at.

Edit: Sheffter said on Mike and Mike this morning that people around the league are expecting and really high number of veterans to be released this offseason over the next few weeks. Looks like this is just the start.

Perhaps they felt that Compton would be much better served with a full training camp practicing as a starter vs a week. Or maybe he would have started if not for the win streak. Or maybe you're right that we are going with 'serviceable with the hope that he eventually develops into more.

Don't get me wrong, I too would love to have a RT that was proven, but I'd rather a young guy with potential than a consistently poor one. Consider this, if Compton plays better than Polumbus did, then we've upgraded a position on an already potent offense.

My bigger concern is the massive drop off if Williams goes down. That's what scares me.

i like Tyson Jackson and Rolando McClain. Jackson NEVER should have been drafted where he was so in a sense he is a bust, but he is a solid 3-4 DE. Rolando is getting a bad rep from a bad organization.

McClain has been debated on quite a bit here during the season when those rumors started to swirl. I don't know enough about Jackson and I'm sure he wouldn't be close to being cheap enough for us to bring in. But if we could I wouldn't mind taking a look at him and seeing what he can do. We could use an upgrade on the DL imo but that would actually be more needed at DT where Cofield could then slide to DE.

No thanks on Eric Wright. The guy can't stay clean... He was suspended for two separate occasions last year for adderall and also a couple DUI's. On top of that, he had an illness which kept him out. Buccs fans will not be sad to see him go.

On another note, I'd bring in Dunta Robinson if he came cheap but I don't think the Falcons will let him go that easily. He should be a candidate for a restructure although as it stands, they only have $1.7 million in cap room.

Heyward-Bey and Louis Murphy would be given the tools to succeed here for sure. They haven't had a mobile QB or fast paced offense to work with... They could certainly flourish here.

Rolando gave himself a bad rep... he's noteably the worst coverage linebacker in the NFL... Certainly not what we need when we have enough trouble covering TE's.

I forgot about the ole' Rolando McClain sweepstakes that is likely to ensue at the start of the league year.

    You guys think he's worth a 6th?

EDIT: Also, Brent Grimes is a FA and ATL may have to pick and choose who they sign there, especially if they want to get Matty Ice in long term.

None of these recent names really intrigue me. Our priority in FA has to be a safety. Has to be. There is nothing more pressing. Corner could be addressed as well. But with the current cap situation, money is quite the object. Fill the biggest need. From there, BPA in the draft. Tyson Jackson, although not worth a huge contract, likely wouldn't come cheap.

I appreciate the fact that there are moves we can make on the cheap and shore up our roster a bit, but the team has to be money weary. No wasted dollars.

No, McClain is only worth a tryout and that is it. Wouldn't give up anything for him and wouldn't be assured that he makes the team. Terrible coverage linebacker.

You have Glenn Dorsey in the OP, not Tyson Jackson

I think Tyson Jackson stays put in all honesty. He's worth more to the Chiefs if he can restructure again like he did last year. The dude has 4 sacks in his entire career since 09. Carriker has over 5 just last season.

I think Heyward Bey is a good guy to go after. He has gradually improved and woukd likely improve just by a change of scenary.
