http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Henry_DietzWilliam Henry "Lone Star" Dietz (August 17, 1884 – July 20, 1964) was an American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Washington State University (1915–1917), Purdue University (1921), Louisiana Tech University (1922–1923), University of Wyoming (1924–1926), and Albright College (1937–1942) compiling a career college football record of 70–47–6. From 1933 to 1934, Dietz was the head coach of the National Football League's Boston Redskins, where he tallied a mark of 11–11–2.

George Preston Marshall, owner and founder of the Boston Braves in 1932, sought to rename the franchise in 1933 after leaving the stadium they shared with the baseball team of the same name. He chose the name Redskins in honor of Dietz, who is of the Sioux Nation.
You would think if everyone had some context they would stop arguing every year to change the name.
Plus, Snyder will never change the name.

It makes perfect sense. He didn't give a damn, he just wanted to sell tickets. I don't think he thought about it at all. From what I know about him, he would have named the team the Ni***ers if it would make him money.
When the team started, it was in Boston, the home of the Red Sox. I suspect that the name Redskins was chosen to try to get some association with them, but I can't prove it and frankly, it doesn't matter. What matters is whether the name is insensitive enough today to consider changing it to something less offensive.
Analogy: I loved my grandfather, but he was a product of his times (born in 1892) and he was racist as hell. I don't use the same terms for groups of people that he did in his day, and I am not disrespecting him or his memory by not doing so.
"The Internet is like a herd of performing elephants with diarrhea: massive, difficult to redirect, awe-inspiring, entertaining, and a source of mind-boggling amounts of excrement when you least expect it" - I wish I had said this.
Vincent who? I thought Marion Barry was still mayor for life.

"Washington strolled to the NFC championship, outscoring their two playoff opponents by a combined total of 48 points. Their domination was more than impressive, it was historic. The 1991 Redskins boasted the largest average margin of victory among all Super Bowl champions."
