Seriously dude, you sound like a conspiracy theorist.
I think MOST people believe he's lying about something. Maybe not in on the hoax, but certainly spinning it to benefit him by lying about meeting her, probably lying about how close they were, and continuing o talk about her after he discovered the hoax. People who recognize that are not conspiracy theorists. You are almost defending him as though something like this happened to someone close to ou or something...I can't understand your insistence that he hasn't been caught in multiple odd lies.

It seems to me like that Tui guy spent a hell of a lot of time and work to invest in a prank/hoax that ultimately has no payoff. Why the hell would you organize something this elaborate without having some ulterior motive?

Really? The Pete Thamel article in SI made him out to be a saint and his popularity soared. That was the intended payoff. Ultimately, yes, it has no payoff (or rather, a very negative payoff), but dummies often don't plan for contingencies.

She means the mastermind who tricked Te'o.

I'm talking about the payoff for the Tui guy if he started all this. he basically did all of this for nothing. That's a lot of time and energy to spend only to get nothing in return.

    Exactly. Thank you!
Ah. Well, you are probably a good person and would not find joy in something like this. There are A LOT of *******s out there who would.

I can see someone getting his rocks off perpetrating a hoax that got picked up by EVERY media outlet EVERYWHERE. Hoax's happen all the time like this. The benefit is you get to feel smarter than everyone even though really, you are just a dumb dick.

    Hahahahahaha

The original article was a fantastic piece of journalism. Now that far less competent investigators are getting involved, it's even better.

I hate to admit that this story has me so hooked, but it really does.

Like Bill Simmons said in his mailbag today, this story truly has entered the "Tyson Zone" and these latest articles prove it. Maybe the "faked my death to evade drug dealers" was the final hook on the scam and they were trying to get money from Te'o? I have no idea what to think at this point.

Funny/sad/ironic how ESPN is as much to blame as anyone for this, and they are by far the biggest beneficiaries too.

If anything, I think ESPN loses face on this one. They allegedly had the story before the National Title game. Their radio hosts have all admitted they heard about this late last week/early this week before it all came out on Deadspin. I talk a lot of crap about ESPN, I barely go to their site anymore (I saw the Simmons article on Grantland.com, not ESPN.com) and I only listen to their radio show if everything else is on commercial, but they look really bad for not breaking this story (from a journalistic point of view). ESPN has really gone downhill the last decade.
