Default For the first time ever, scientists are able to film a giant squid in its native habitat

Some cool stuff. One of the big things scientists learned or at least this one says she learned is that their approach to looking has been in error. Imagine sneaking up to someone with your headlights on and your motor blaring with a bad muffler. Effectively, that's what marine biologists had been doing.

This time around, with a quieter approach and using lights (mostly in the red spectrum that most sea animals are blind to) they were able to capture 18 minutes of squid footage in one go and then caught them on tape four more times.

I enjoyed the interview... I pretty much left it intact without even cleaning up her ums and ahs which I usually do.

Me too. I got to see some pictures and videos of it which we couldn't share because the Discovery Channel bought the first rights, but this thing really looks cool and kind of like an alien from a movie with its metallic shimmer.

It's incredible. What an amazingly beautiful planet we live on. There is so much to the sea we don't know about yet.

We don't know one single thing about the mating habits of Great Whites and people are fascinated with them. I think that's mind boggling.

I want to learn to dive and I will very soon.

I'm still amazed that we know more about the moon than we know about the oceans.
Pretty cool stuff here Burgold, you have an awesome job for a Communist.

    Ouch!

To be honest, it's one of the things I am still very watchful for... if I do feel the hand of propaganda I'll leave. I think they know that. Amazingly, I've been given such autonomy, I've never even approached to do a science story eminating from Russia on VOR.

As for the squid... it is really cool. The most I've ever done was snorkeling, but getting a chance to see these worlds even second hand is so amazing. And to think, their entire world view of giant squid behavior has partly been rewritten because of this encounter. Mind you, follow-ups will be important to see if this squid is representative.

I was pleased by the topics this week. I really liked the Bonobo topic too though I think Tan was a little nervous... Still, a pretty cool experiment and I kinda dug learning the differences between Bonobos and Chimpanzees.

And the cool part of this one wasn't actually the meteorite itself, but about halfway into the interview he did a breakdown of how one looks for a meteor and how to tell if you've spotted one.

You know I'm just messing with you, I've never heard anything that would make me think that they're forcing you to shill for them. What I have heard is plenty of evidence that you're all about science and stuff like that so I'm pretty sure you're one of them Liberals, but Voice of Russia can hardly be blamed for that....that blame goes to NPR!

That said you have had some really interesting topics this week, good job. My favorite interview that you did was about that Jesus wife thing, that pastor you interviewed was flat brilliant!

Sure, what do you think Jesus rode into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday?

Just goes to show you ya never know what direction a thread would turn. Who would have thought that giant squids would lead to Jesus.

Yup, same story and same people. Small mark of pride beating them to air. Though I certainly didn't break the story.
