Default KingGibbs Annual Public Service Announcement Regarding Those Pipes

Just a reminder with the arctic blast heading our way to disconnect your garden hose(s), turn off the outgoing line(s) and drain the remaining water in those spickets. Don't want to see my fellow ES'ers with frozen then busted pipes. It's not pretty when it happens.

We've been in the 20s here in PA for a day or two. Is it too late to drain the outgoing lines? I didn't use them since the summer so it shouldn't be a problem, but just want to make sure.

You're good. Go ahead and drain them.

It is 70 and sunny here today.

I do have a question though, sometimes it does dip down to the 20 at night in December.

At what temperature are pipes at risk for freezing? Is it 32, or does it need to be much lower?

What if I want my pipes to burst?

Being that your temps fluctuate so much from day to night, I doubt if frozen pipes would be an issue. My outgoing pipes are inside my house and it's just the width of the foundation that the rest of the line runs. I have the luxury of the pipes being insulated because they are in my utility room.

Wish I'd seen this thread earlier. Pipes are frozen. The high for tomorrow is 13, so I should have seen this coming and left the faucets open by a trickle.

It was 3 degrees this morning. I shut off the external spigot, but we have a spigot in the garage which is more or less unheated. Aside from the spigot all the piping is in the heated basement. Cause for concern. I looked for a shutoff but couldn't find it.

Where were you that it was 3 degrees? Lowest I saw was 17.

Gotcha. I was in Pittsburgh over the weekend, joked today that I brought the cold back to NOVA with me.

I keep expecting for the OP to be a picture of KG kissing his biceps.
The soldiers gave three cheers as they urged their tired horses north across the uneven hills. Some of the mounts, exhausted after a week of almost continual marching, began to lag behind; others, spurred on by their enthusiastic riders, began to edge past the regiment's commander. "Boys, hold your horses," Custer cautioned; "there are plenty of them down there for us all."
