Do I really have to spell it out to you?

The monkey and the implication that Iran is just developing a peaceful space program is just a smoke screen. If they wanted to do space exploration and science they could do it cheaper and better by letting Russia do the lifting. Launching a monkey into space is just an excuse to further develop their rocket program.

Next you will be telling us that they don't want a nuclear reactor simply to generate electricity.

A nuclear reactor AND refining their own uranium AND a refining capability that people caim is 100 times bigger than they need AND the demand that nobody is allowed to actually monitor what they're doing.

Ahmadinejad says he is ready to be first Iranian in space

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Monday he was ready to be the first human sent into orbit by Iran's fledgling space program, Iranian media reported.

Iran declared last week that it had successfully launched a monkey into space and retrieved it alive, which officials hailed as a major step towards their goal of sending humans into space.

The launch added to Western concerns about Iran's space program because the same rocket technology could potentially be used to deliver a nuclear warhead on a ballistic missile.

"I am ready to be the first human to be sent to space by Iranian scientists," Ahmadinejad said on Monday, on the sidelines of an exhibition of space achievements in Tehran, according to the Mehr news agency.

John McCain Called 'Racist' for Referring to Ahmadinejad as Space 'Monkey'

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad proclaimed earlier today that he wanted to be the first Iranian in space. And, okay, that might be open to a few jokes considering his country's mostly debunked claim about sending a monkey into orbit last week, which Iranian space officials are still defending. But actually referring to Ahmadinejad — or any person — as a "monkey" is a terrible idea, which Senator John McCain found out today as he went on the defensive himself.

Upon hearing the news of Ahmadinejad's post-presidency aspirations, McCain or someone on his social-media team sent out this message on his official Twitter feed:

So Ahmadinejad wants to be first Iranian in space - wasn't he just there last week? "Iran launches monkey into space" http://news.yahoo.com/iran-launches-...003037176.html

    3:41 PM - 04 Feb 13
I don't think there's anything racist about it. I said something similar when the monkey 'news' first broke and plenty of Middle Easterners made the same joke as well.

I'm sure that monkey is enjoying the 72 monkey virgins in heaven right now - totally worth the sacrifice.

Well, before the revolution, Iran had a well established civilian program. What they are doing can be argued is in support of a civilian program. The size of the enrichment program is not the smoking gun,

What can't be explained away is the simple fact that they are known to be working on multiple components of an nuclear implosion device. All of the following have been reported at various times:
    • multipoint high-speed detonators
    • shaping uranium into a hemispherical implosion dimensions
    • high explosives with a geometry suitable to generate the implosion
    • very high speed diagnostic devices suitable for studying such implosions
    • mathematical modelling programs that really only are relevant for theoretical studies of weapon physics
    • neutron initiation devices
    • studies on how to integrate some of the above technologies into the reentry vehicle of the Shahab 3 missile.

    There's other stuff too.

Soluting the proud history of US Monkey Space Program.
    • The first ever monkey astronaut was Albert, a rhesus monkey, who on June 11, 1948 rode to over 63 km (39 mi) on a V2 rocket. Albert died of suffocation during the flight
    • Albert was followed by Albert II who survived the V2 flight but died on impact on June 14, 1949
    • Albert III died at 35,000 feet (10.7 km) in an explosion of his V2 on September 16, 1949.
    • Albert IV on the last monkey V2 flight died on impact on December 8 that year
    • Yorick, also called Albert VI, along with 11 mouse crewmates, became the first animals to survive rocket flight on 20 September 1951, although he died 2 hours after landing.Two of the mice also died after recovery;
    • On December 13, 1958, Gordo, also called Old Reliable, a squirrel monkey, survived being launched aboard Jupiter AM-13 by the US Army. He was killed due to mechanical failure of the parachute recovery system in the rocket nose cone
    • On May 28, 1959, aboard the JUPITER AM-18, Able, a rhesus monkey, and Miss Baker, a squirrel monkey, became the first monkeys to successfully return to Earth after traveling in space.

the first US ICBM was the SM-65 Atlas which became operational in 1959.

I have read that it's only recently been admitted that Yuri Gagarin didn;t actually land after his flight, either.

Supposedly, the Russian spacecraft didn't have the ability to slow down enough to use a parachute landing. So Gagarin's spacecraft was fitted with an ejector seat, and Gagarin ejected from his spacecraft at 20,000 feet or some such, and parachuted to the ground.

I didn't know that... I did know it came as a suprise when we found out relatively recently 90's I think that Laika burned up in space. Great story thanks.
