CHICAGO (AP) — Police are hunting for a convicted murderer after he was mistakenly released from custody in Chicago, where he was sent to face a drug charge while serving a 60-year prison sentence in Indiana.

Indiana Department of Corrections officials say Steven L. Robbins, 44, was sent to Cook County Circuit Court on Tuesday to face a drug charge. The charge was dropped, "but for reasons yet unknown, the offender was released by Illinois authorities without being held for return," the department said in a news release.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office said it was investigating how Robbins was released Wednesday evening. The Gary, Ind., native was serving the decades-long sentence for murder and weapons convictions out of Marion County in Indiana. He started serving the sentence in October 2004 and his earliest projected release date was more than 16 years from now on June 29, 2029.

Both Illinois and Indiana have issued arrest warrants for Robbins. Officials in both states are asking for the public's help to apprehend him.

Information about Robbins' murder case wasn't immediately available Thursday evening

I always have mixed feeling about when this type of stuff happens.

    Other side says...let him go.

He's serving a 60 year sentence already and another jurisdiction wants him on a drug charge so he gets to go on a road trip?

Why wouldn't they visit him in custody?

It sure does seem like a waste of money and time to even bother trying him for something that, I assume, wouldn't even increase his sentence. What's the point?
"Washington strolled to the NFC championship, outscoring their two playoff opponents by a combined total of 48 points. Their domination was more than impressive, it was historic. The 1991 Redskins boasted the largest average margin of victory among all Super Bowl champions."

I remember when I almost got deported. I was literally stepping onto the bus to take me to Mexico and they pulled me off. I'm as lily white as you can get.

Don't feel like sharing my story again right now, but yeah. They had me and they almost deported me. I was just going with it.

So since they released him, when they finally get him back does he get charges added on to his sentence for "escaping"?
