Thread: Which Washington professional franchise will bring the city its next Championship?

  1. #1

Default Which Washington professional franchise will bring the city its next Championship?

This topic comes up regularly as Washington teams surge. The difference here is that our Redskins have been the butt of the conversation as we lauded our other pro team efforts. Even last year (2012-2013) the Redskins were not honestly considered a playoff hopeful and we assumed that the Caps would have the East sewn up for years with regular trips to the Stanley Cup.

So, with Pitchers and Catchers already checked in and the Caps stringing a couple together finally, here is the 2013 Washington Championship question:

Which Washington professional franchise will bring the city its next Championship?

    Washington Redskins?
    Washington Nationals?
    Washington Wizards?
    Washington Capitals?
    DC United?

It is awfully fun to be looking at spring training and the upcoming NFL Draft looking at these teams as contenders and favorites.

This is not a season prediction thread. Those will come I am sure, Just which team will win a championship first and how far do you think they will each go this particular season?

Nationals will close out October with it's first World Series meanwhile the Skins will be a few games in to their Super Bowl winning season.

WIzards are still a team? Capitals have a curse. I don't follow soccer.

I've been saying for years that it will be the Redskins, and I still firmly believe that. When Shanahan and Allen came in and this became a real football organization the Redskins took the lead for me. Now that we have a young core lead by RGIII, it only makes me that much more confident.
“Hey, about an hour ago, all right, their [defensive] coordinator [Juan Castillo] told us, told [offensive line coach Chris] Foerster, that [if] the Giants would have lost last week, they were in the playoffs,” Kyle Shanahan said. “He didn’t mention that they had to beat us today. **** him, **** these guys. In 2012 the Redskins are gonna be the NFC East champions, and that starts right ****ing today.”

    I voted Redskins and Nationals.

The Nats very well could win the World Series this year (2013) and I feel the Redskins will get one in the next five.

The Wizards and the Caps are owned by Ted Leonsis... and nothing prospers under that man...

Vamos United... but I think the West Coast teams are just too good these days.

Tough one........I am anxious to see if the Nats can continue to build from last year or if they were just teasing us. I really thought they were going to win it all last year, just seemed like the stars were lined up perfectly even without their ace.

I voted for the Skins........I believe in Karma and feel Griffin was sent here for a reason........

I personally feel that folks voting for the Skins right now are a little optimistic. We have a great baseball team under our nose that has a very good chance of delivering this city its first "Big 4" sports championship since 1991. And yes, I like soccer, but MLS isn't even close in popularity. If not this season, the core of this Nats team will still be together another two seasons after this. They are prime right now.

The Skins have a good chance in a few years, but right now, this city should be focused on the Nats and selling that park out.

We had a chance this year. Who knows what would have happened if RG3 stayed in healthy... We won the NFCEast which is arguably the toughest division in pro football. We beat the Ravens with Cousins, who then won the SB. Any given Sunday brother.

FWIW, I voted the Nationals as well, but you'll see in my statement I said only because the Nats season ends first and then the Skins will win it a few months later

I don't think the NFC East is the toughest anymore, not with the way the Eagles are currently, and the Cowboys constant injuries/chokejobs. Hell, the Eagles basically replaced us in our usual spot. I would probably put our division 3rd, behind the AFC North and NFC North, but that's just a personal feeling.

I still think the Skins need a few years to put it all together, but hey, our savior is only 23, so we have time there. Hopefully.

    Well, I might be going out on a limb, or should I say the very tip of the trichome { fine hair which grows on a tree leaf } that grows out of the outermost edge of the very end leaf which grows off of the outermost branch that extends over the furthest point of the cliff, but;
I say the Capitals. Why? Glad you asked; because I think the Skins are 2 years away from going to the big game, and a rough sophomore season for RGIII when he does get back will not help.
The Nationals will most likely not have the momentum before they are picked apart.
The Wizards? Why, I dunno, but when they were called the Bullets, they seemed to have played a LITTLE bit better, but not by much. They have a loooong way to go; maybe decades.
DC United? Obscurity at its finest.
The Capitals are going to sneak up on everyone this year; they get close, then fall apart; well not this time. Everyone will expect them to choke, as usual, but thats when they lull opponents into believing it will happen again and win it all!

And, you are welcome on the science lesson for the day.

I put Nationals, because I think they had a very good shot of winning it all last year, but basically chose to stick with a long term plan rather than a short term plan. This year I'd say they have a very good shot at it, and their window is wide open over the next several years.

The Redskins do have a good shot as well, but the NFL is tougher I think. Look at the Colts with Manning, it took him until 2006 to finally get one. There are so many moving parts on a football team, it's tough to predict. In addition, since football is one game, single elimination, a bad day can end the season. In baseball, you can afford to have a bad game or two and still pull off the series win.

Tack onto that our cap penalty, the lack of a 1st rounder this year, and RGIII's injury potentially reducing his effectiveness, and the 2013 season is far more likely to be a successful one for the Nationals than the Redskins.

If the Nationals don't win it this year though, I'd say it's closer, but I'd still give the edge to the Nationals. Simply put, in football you need a lot of luck to pull off the big win (Flacco to Jones 70+ yard throw against Denver never should have happened, but they got lucky), while in baseball, across a 5 or 7 game serious, skill *should* usually carry the day.

Anyone not answering Nats, obviously isn't paying attention to them.

That said, I meant to click Wizards and messed up. Wizards, 2013-2014 NBA champions. Lock of the century.

    EDIT: Thank you Fight4RGIII

The trio of John Wall, Brad Beal, and Shabazz Muhammad will turn the Wizards into a dynasty.

And that's why the Caps are less likely to win.

The Nats otoh, don't have to rely on "anything happening".
