BREAKING: Hugo Chavez, socialist firebrand who led Venezuela since 1999, is dead at 58, NBC confirms

Adiós, Presidente
The outsized life of Venezuela's celebrity president.
He was a larger-than-life figure, the man who called George W. Bush "the devil himself" at the 2006 U.N. General Assembly session, joked around with Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad about launching missiles at Washington, and sat for a famously flattering profile written by none other than Sean Penn.
To his detractors, Hugo Chávez was a clownish authoritarian, willfully pursuing policies bound to turn Venezuela into an economic basket case (and giving away a house or two to his supporters along the way).
But Chávez always had loyal followers -- and not just in his own country -- who appreciated his willingness to stand up to the Washington consensus in his own colorful fashion, and who saw him as a consistent champion of the poor and downtrodden.
After a long (and often behind-the-scenes) battle with cancer, Chávez died on Tuesday, March 5. Here's a brief look back at his rise to power and Bolivarian Revolution.

Probably the VP, who said earlier today that Chavez's cancer was an attack by his enemies, while kicking out the US mlitary attache for 'spying'.

Sounds like the same old same old
His party still controls the presidency, just going to be more anti-US rhetoric

heads up your "hugone" joke has already been tweeted a bunch of times
Yeah, wasn't much of a shock at this point since he had been in poor health for a couple years.
I'm curious how the people of Venezuela are reacting to this. I wasn't really a fan and he has a shady human rights record for sure, but it's pretty well established he was one of the most popular presidents in all of South America for a while now.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Vice President Nicolás Maduro also pointed to the U.S. and other foreign countries of somehow poisoning Chávez with cancer.

Venezuela's army chiefs pledge to support President Nicolas Maduro after Hugo Chavez's death
He has helped millions of those that needed it most and for that he should be commended, he also was pretty authoritarian and built a cult of personality that has the potential to hurt his country and his vision without him. His death sure will shake up the region though. RIP
So basically the Venezuelan people are still ****ed? Their VP sounds like another idiot.
