Report: Jordan foils huge chemical attack on inelligence HQ
    16-04-2004, 10:53

The cell that was apprehended last week in Jordan planned to carry out a large-scale chemical attack, Jordanian officials told the London-based al-Hayat daily. According to the Friday's report, the prevention of the attack may have saved thousands of lives.

It added that the "majority of the members" were arrested. Jordanian officials said the plan was to detonate a powerful car bomb, which included chemical materials, at the Jordanian Military Intelligence headquarters. The cell also intended to use poison gas during attacks on the US embassy in Amman and a government building in the kingdom.

The officials said that following the interrogation of the cell members, it was revealed they were connected to senior al-Qaeda operative Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who is high up on the US most wanted list in Iraq.

Two detained men identified as Suleiman Khaled Darwish and Ali Adwan "established the cell, which was funded by al-Zarqawi from Iraq and Iran," Jordanian sources told al Hayat.

With the help of a third man, Azmi Abd al Fattah al Jayousi, they managed to smuggle three cars packed with explosives. In one of the cars, security forces found the chemical charge. The Jordanian authorities are still looking for al Jayousi.

The Jordanian officials were quoted as saying, “The bomb, had it been detonated, could have affected people in a one kilometer radius and cause the deaths of more 20,000 people, according to estimates by bomb experts”.

King of Jordan Abdullah II on Wednesday sent a letter of appreciation to the Kingdom’s security forces who managed to foil the plot. “Thank God, the plans of these criminals were foiled and thousands of souls were saved from a crime this country has never known”. (Albawaba.com)

Remember, there's absolutely no connection between Iraq and al Qaeda. None. (And for the record, the officials referenced above are Jordanian officials.)

King Abdullah: Al-Qaida WMDs Came From Syria

Jordan's King Abdullah revealed on Saturday that vehicles reportedly containing chemical weapons and poison gas that were part of a deadly al-Qaida bomb plot came from Syria, the country named by U.S. weapons inspector David Kay last year as a likely repository for Iraq's weapons of mass destruction.

"It was a major, major operation. It would have decapitated the government," King Abdullah told the San Francisco Chronicle. Jordanian officials estimated that the death count could have been as high as 20,000 - seven times greater than the Sept. 11 attacks.

King Abdullah said that trucks containing 17.5 tons of explosives had come from Syria, though he took pains not to implicate Syrian President Bashir Assad in the al-Qaida plot, saying, "I'm completely confident that Bashir did not know about it."

In his testimony before Congress last year, weapons inspector Kay said U.S. satellite surveillance showed substantial vehicular traffic going from Iraq to Syria just prior to the U.S. attack on March 19, 2003.

While Kay said investigators couldn't be sure the cargo contained weapons of mass destruction, one of his top advisers described the evidence as "unquestionable."

"People below the Saddam-Hussein-and-his-sons level saw what was coming and decided the best thing to do was to destroy and disperse," said James Clapper in comments reported by the New York Times on Oct. 29. Clapper heads the National Imagery and Mapping Agency.

Israeli intelligence has long believed that after the U.S. delayed invasion plans to allow U.N. weapons inspectors time to search for Iraq's WMDs, Saddam moved the banned weapons to Syria, the only other country ruled by the Ba'ath Party.

On April 1, Jordanian officials announced the arrest of several terrorist suspects, saying they were still hunting for two cars filled with explosives.

Five days later, the State Department revealed that the attackers were linked to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian-based terrorist considered to be one of al-Qaida's most dangerous. One of Zarqawi's targets was the U.S. Embassy in Amman.

By Saturday morning European news services were quoting an unnamed Jordanian official, who revealed that the al-Qaida plotters planned to use weapons of mass destruction in the foiled attack.

"We found primary materials to make a chemical bomb which, if it had exploded, would have made nearly 20,000 deaths ... in an area of one square kilometre," the official told Agence France-Press.

Another operation planned by the network was to use "deadly gas against the US embassy and the prime minister's office in Amman," he added.

A car belonging to the al-Qaida plotters, containing a chemical bomb and poisonous gas, was intercepted just 75 miles from the Syrian border.

I dictator didn't know terrorists were trucking 17.5 tons of explosives and chemicals through his country?

That's BS!!! Pres ASSad knew exactly what they were doing. The Syrians better watch their step. If the US has any solid proof they are hiding weapons of mass destruction or they were a part of a terrorist attack in Iraq or anywhere else in the middle east they are going to get pounded.

I can't believe this is not headline news on all the news networks.

The only thing I can think is that perhaps there's a credibility issue here -- but still, I'd expect reporters in Amman checking this story out; in-depth exposes on whether Syria has Iraq's WMDs.

Fox has started to report the story -- but good grief: a foiled WMD attack? Being preempted by stories about the Kerry/Bush campaigns? You've gotta be kidding me.

The Olympics in Athens and Oct/Nov. in the States in general may be more interesting than we thought (and I mean that in a bad way).

We haven't learned jack from Sept. 11th. Amazing.

There was a foiled truck bomb attack already in Jordan. Now this.

I've heard of it, but I didn't want to come down too strongly in support of the WMD aspect until more came out(if it ever does.) Sometimes I wonder, if like under Clinton, terrorist attacks that would drag us into war with Syria or Iran are being ignored by this administration for political reasons.

There's no reason NOT to bomb the hell out of Syria's military assets at this stage.

It's running on the BEEB too

Hey, I just remebered. Someone on this board tried to tell me this week that Klinton sending cruise missles to Afganistan was a sign of his tough stance against terrorism.

Well, since this stuff was appearantly heading to the American embassy, that is like an attack on us. Maybe to send a strong message we should sent some crusie missles to Syria for this.

    Sarge and Big John,

I was already in a discussion this week with two friends of mine, one from Peru who hates the Shining Path YET thinks that we are only going to breed terrorism because kids whose siblings or parents were killed are going to want to get revenge.

I tried(but they didn't even get what I was saying it seems) to tell them they were buying into a double standard vis a vis Islamist terrorists. Somehow, we can't kill anyone or more people will hate us, as if there aren't millions who already do, but where were these concerns during WW II with the Germans and Japanese?

You KILL your enemy and break his will. You don't worry about kids growing up to hate you or you'll never fight anyone. And that's on the kid to think that his dad or brother didnt' need killing for murdering civilians, etc.

It's almost pointless even arguing with some people because they don't even understand basic "big picture" questions or their inconsistencies or hypocrisies that you point out to them.

    Exactly...

I also think the Pershing idea of soaking bullets in pig blood and putting pork in the graves of Islamic terrorist are a good idea as well.

If terrorist are going to use religious ideas of paradise for killing innocent women and children we should use their own religious ideas as a deterrent for them to commit these acts.

Apparently the Pershing thing is an urban legend.

You know, I'm not certain ANYTHING would work on these people. For one, they use ambulances and aid convoys to smuggle in weapons and as troop transports. These are the same type of people who think Jews ANYWHERE in the world are a legitimate target for violence, that infidel women are legit targets for rape and harrassment.

If we use pig fat or blood, all they'll do is find some scriptural basis for ignoring it. After all, tehy hide out in mosques and plot the murder of civilians in their "holy places" and then scream when we do anything.

The Muslims in that part of the world, especially the Arabs thrive on the construction of "dream castles" and each attempt to shatter these edifices only leads to them being built to ever-greater heights. It makes no sense, but fantasy is very much a part of the mindset in Arab culture.

ANd it's a shame-based culture, not a moral-based one. The "diss" is more important than blowing up kids. UNLESS it's their kids and you're an infidel---then that's immoral.
