Police: Mom Kills Baby By Amputating Arms
Infant Dies On Way To Hospital

    POSTED: 1:22 pm CST November 22, 2004
    UPDATED: 10:06 pm CST November 22, 2004

DALLAS -- Police Monday charged a Plano woman with capital murder in the gruesome death of her 11-month-old daughter.

Police said Dena Schlosser, 35, amputated her infant's arms inside the family residence at The Fairways Apartments in the 1700 block of Coit Road.

They said the young mother called 911 just before noon to summon officers to the apartment.

Police said that Schlosser was quietly sitting in her living room when they arrived at the scene, while her daughter was bleeding to death in a back bedroom.

"[Schlosser] was sitting inside the apartment. She had blood on her clothing," Officer Carl Duke. "There was no indication from my officers about her being hysterical."

The baby was taken to a Plano hospital, where she died.

Officials said Schlosser admitted to cutting off her baby's arms.

"There were some statements made by the mother ... that indicate she was responsible for the injuries to this child," he said.

Schlosser's husband and two other children, ages 6 and 9, were not at home at the time of the incident.

Neighbors said they were shocked to hear of the incident.

Michael Lujan, who lives next door to the family, said there were no signs of trouble.

"They seemed like a sweet family, go out there and have a picnic under the trees. Just, I don't know, they seemed like a nice little family," he said.

Despite outward appearances, police and child welfare investigators said they had been to the home before.

In fact, Child Protective Services opened a case on the family soon after the birth of the 11-month-old, NBC 5 reported.

NBC 5 also reported that Schlosser was suffering from post-partum depression and was receiving mental health care.

Schlosser was hospitalized for a few days when her husband told authorities she had been acting strangely since the birth of the third child.

Once she was released from the hospital, Schlosser agreed to seek counseling and saw a psychiatrist, said Marissa Gonzales, a CPS spokeswoman.

"When we investigated her case and opened the case up for intensive family based safety services, we referred Mom to services that she fully participated in," said Geoff Wool, Department of Family and Protective Services spokesman.

Wool said the state agency conducted extensive monitoring of the case and accompanied Schlosser and her family on some visits to mental health services.

Wool and Gonzales said they could not say whether Schlosser was on medication.

The case was closed in August.

"At the time we closed the case, we had been assured that Mom was stabilized and that she was not a risk to herself or her children," Wool told The Associated Press.

Okay ... after I saw that she amputated her 11 month old daughters arms ... I refused to read anymore.

I don't understand people. Children are a blessing. So many people want them - yet can't have them for medical reasons.

People are just F'ed up. Plain and simple. There is absolutely no reason to do anything like that to a child - or anyone else for that reason.

It is truly sad and disgusting.....depression and mental instability are fairly common after childbirth and anyones family should be aware of the signs.....Not to excuse this crime at all, just awareness and support is needed.

Woman Left Girls, Slept at Mother's
Children in Shed 3 Nights, Police Told

    By Arthur Santana
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Tuesday, November 23, 2004; Page B01

A Maryland woman told police that after she locked her 4- and 5-year-old daughters in a commercial storage shed last week, she left them unattended in the cramped, unheated quarters for three nights while she spent at least one night sleeping at her mother's home, Charles County authorities said.

Felicia M. Dorsey, 33, who was freed from jail Saturday after a $50,000 bond was posted for her by a religious group, told county sheriff's investigators that she initially padlocked the two girls in the shed at 3 p.m. Tuesday, according to an affidavit released yesterday by Charles County District Court authorities.

It states that the children, before they were found Friday, spent many hours alone in the shed between Dorsey's visits, including one stretch of 22 hours.

Although Dorsey has described the two girls to authorities as her biological daughters, Norris West, a spokesman for the Maryland Department of Human Resources, said yesterday that social services officials suspect that she is not their mother. West declined to elaborate on the suspicion. The girls remain in the care of social workers.

Dorsey, a convenience store worker, had been homeless since being evicted from a Waldorf apartment Nov. 11, authorities said. After locking the children in the $65-a-month shed Tuesday afternoon, Dorsey "went to her mother's house where she slept for the night," the affidavit states.

The 6-by-12-foot shed, at Budget Self Storage in Waldorf, was largely filled with Dorsey's belongings and illuminated by one overhead light bulb, authorities said. Nighttime temperatures in the Washington area last week hovered in the upper 30s and low 40s. When the girls were found, they were wearing coats, authorities said.

Dorsey checked on the two youngsters in the shed at 8 a.m. Wednesday, 17 hours after she had locked them in, according to the affidavit. It states that she then returned to her mother's home, but it does not say where she spent Wednesday night.

Dorsey next visited the shed to check on the children 22 hours later, at 6 a.m. Thursday, then again at 4 p.m. Thursday, according to the affidavit. The affidavit does not say where Dorsey spent Thursday night, and authorities declined to elaborate on the document.

The affidavit states that Dorsey next visited the shed at 8:30 a.m. Friday -- 16 hours after she had last seen the two girls -- then went to her job as an assistant manager of a Dash In convenience store about two miles away.

Terry Palmer, manager of the storage facility, said he was walking the grounds about 11:30 a.m. Friday when he heard the sounds of children playing inside storage unit 110. Palmer, who did not have a key for the padlock, called the sheriff's office. After Palmer cut the lock and deputies found the girls, they summoned social workers.

Kristen Adkins, a sheriff's spokeswoman, said investigators would not comment on why Dorsey slept at her mother's house while the children were in the shed, calling it a "sensitive part of the investigation." The affidavit does not identify Dorsey's mother or give her address.

Investigators said they found no food or water in the shed with the girls. According to the affidavit, authorities found "a container filled with a substance consistent with urine" in the shed. The girls did not appear harmed or disheveled. Palmer, the storage manager, said that more than anything, the girls appeared disoriented.

Two other children, ages 12 and 13, whom Dorsey said are her son and daughter, are staying with a relative of Dorsey's, authorities said.

Dorsey, arrested Friday at the Dash In, is charged with child endangerment and leaving a child unattended. Her initial court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 29, authorities said. She remains free on bond posted by the Ministers Alliance of Charles County.

The religious group has declined to discuss Dorsey's situation or make her available for an interview. Her lawyer, Reuben Collins, also did not want to discuss the case, according to his secretary.

West, the social services spokesman, said that anyone with information about the relationship between Dorsey and the two girls should call the Charles County Department of Social Services at 301-392-6400.

Man, I hate reading all this The biological purpose for living is to bear children and raise them, but people go and do this sh*t! Children have their whole lives ahead of them and you have these idiots make their lives worse or even take it away. I will never understand why a human being would just flat out kill its young. WE ARE NOT LIONS! Sh*t!

You know we live in a F*ck up world. Yesterday a woman was trying to jump of a bridge on 295. If these person had any children imagine what she sould have done. I always say that people who should have kids don't have them. But people should not have a bunch and can't afford to raise them. I am not criticism them but not being able to afford to raise them could contribute to this malicious acts.

That is one reason why Pez and I are starting to look at adoption. I for one do have health problems that prevent kids, but also there is way too many kids out there that need loveing homes. Has any of y'all adopted? Any help you can give would be great!

Huly, good luck with the adoption process. I have friends who were trying to adopt, and you need to be really patient. They had a couple times where the Mother backed out.

That is why I would say be patient, and you need to have thick skin.

They worked with three different mothers, and finally found one that followed through with the process.

They were thrilled, and are excellent parents.

If you have any specific questions, I will try to answer them through him if it helps. One thing he REALLY stressed though, was the patience part.

We know it will be a long wait and we are ready. We just do not know who to contact etc to start the process. I know both the Government (I am a federal employee) and Time Warner Cable (Pez,s CO) helps, but where do we begin?

This must be "Lose you mind" week. We've had major fights in sports, a lunatic hunter killing six other hunters, and two p.o.s. mothers that should be shot.
What's the difference between God and pilots?
    God doesn't think he's a pilot.

Taxiing down the tarmac, a DC-10 abruptly stopped, turned around and returned to the gate. After an hour-long wait, it finally took off. A concerned passenger asked the flight attendant, “What, exactly, was the problem?” “The pilot was bothered by a noise he heard in the engine,” explained the flight attendant. “It took us a while to find a new pilot.”

    http://adopting.adoption.com/adopt/g...-adoption.html

That is a great site for information gathering, what to expect, where to start, etc.

    http://www.1-800-homestudy.com/

That is another site that helps with preparing for home study profiling etc.

Both of these can suggest agencies, etc that can be helpful for you etc.

These are the places where my friend started, and used an agency that is listed on one of these sites.

I hope this helps, and I wish you the best of luck!!!

There are forums on those sites where you can talk with adoptive parents, and get suggestions and tips from them as well.
